  • Compressor is a major noise source of air-conditioner. Especially, its low frequency band noise below 1000㎐ is very important because it will not be attenuated by passing through the cover panel and heat exchanger in air-conditioner. The factors affecting the low frequency band noise are studied by geometric similarity along with several experiments, and the low frequency noise is closely related with the discharge holes of muffler as well as the cavity of lower shell. • For a hermetic reciprocating compressor, it has been known that the gas pulsation in the suction line affects the compressor performance, and suction muffler design has been focused on both of noise reduction and minimum pressure drop across the muffler. Some studies have been carried out on the mutual interaction between the gas pulsation and the cylinder pressure to investigate some supercharging effects, but their efforts were limited on rather simple geometries. In this paper, interaction of the gas pulsation in the compressor suction line with cylinder pressure via suction valve motion has been calculated; for the gas pulsation analysis, modeling of Helmholtz resonators in series was used, and for cylinder pressure calculation, energy equations was set up for the gas inside the cylinder. For demonstration of this calculation method, four different types of suction line configurations for a hermetic reciprocating compressor were compared in terms of compressor performance and gas pulsation level.

  • This study has been conducted to investigate the characteristics of flow field and discharge valve motion in a rotary compressor. In this study, a transient three-dimensional numerical analysis using FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) model has been employed to analyze the interaction between the discharge valve and the refrigerants in the rotary compressor. It has been observed that two peaks have appeared in the displacement of the discharge valve. The maximum displacement of the discharge valve has been found to be located at the second peak. Also, the input pressure of the refrigerants has been compared with the pressures of the muffler passage and the compressor outlet in the rotary compressor. The pressure has decreased along the pathway in the rotary compressor. And the volume flow rates obtained from the current numerical study have been compared with the experiment at data to verify the validity of the present numerical study. This study may supply the fundamental data for the design of rotary compressors.

  • We described an integrated management system, which is a design system of suction muffler(SMDS). SMDS constructs a virtual design system and possesses a Mutual Interfacing Module function using a Remote Analysis function and a GUI(Graphic User Interface). This system consists of a sever and clients. Client performs modeling and preprocessing, and server analyzes the results. The system uses Telnet and FTP based on TCP/IP protocol for connecting a client with a server.. It uses a PC at each work place as a basic platform for design and analysis of goods, and si able to manage a project as a unit. It is shown through an exsample that it is useful as a design tool in the fields.

  • Fuel cells convert a fuel together with oxygen in a highly efficient electrochemical reaction to electricity and water. Since the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell stack dose not generate any noise, Fuel cell systems are expected to operated much quieter than combustion engines. However, the tonal noise and the broad band noise caused by a centrifugal compressor and an electric motor cause which is required to feed the ambient air to the cathode of the fuel cell stack with high pressure. In this study, the multi-camber perforated muffler is used to reduce noise. We propose optimized muffler model using an axiomatic design method that optimizes the parameters of perforated muffler while keeping the volume of muffler minimized.

  • Rotary compressors are one of the most important parts of air-conditioners in the industry This device usually has noise problems during the circulation process of the refrigerant and muffler is used for the noise reduction. The acoustic performance of the muffler depends on its shape and its hole locations on the upper surface. Therefore finding the optimum location of the muffler holes is a topic of increasing importance in the compressor industry. In this research the optimization of the muffler hole locations and the importance of the resonator cavity on the lower surface of the muffler in acoustic point of view is studied. At first, the topology optimization for the 2 hole muffler is performed based on a model without resonator cavity by using genetic algorithm. The 2 hole muffler's acoustic analysis and experiment results are matching, however, the optimized model's results are not. By adding the resonator cavity and also by changing the cavity shape, the acoustic analysis and experiment result comparison is Performed for different cavity shapes. The topology optimization of the revised model with cavity is carried out for noise reduction. Finally, the optimized design is produced and tested for validation.

  • The noise and vibration sources of rotary compressor for room air-conditioner are pressure pulsation of compression process, cavity resonance of inner space, structural radiation noise of shell and impact noise of discharge valve. Among them, pressure pulsation is very important noise and vibration source. Because it transferred various kinds of noise and vibration like as mentioned above. In this reason, muffler and resonator are used in order to absorb and remove these noises. But an analytical prediction using acoustic analysis does not coincident with the experimental result. The difference between analysis and actual state is due to the assumption of analysis. This paper covered with new concept of muffler design based on the turbulence kinetic energy of flow by using CFD. From this analysis, it is possible to decide the best position of discharge port of muffler. Therefore $2{\sim}3dB$ noise reduction effect is acquired in rotary compressor of 5000 BTU grade. Also new approach of resonator design is suggested. From this study, the characteristics of resonator and surge hole (a kind of resonator without pipe length) are identified. The former is useful for pure tone noise (narrow frequency band), and the latter is effective for broad frequency band. This paper shows that it is very available to use 3 dimensional analysis of resonator in order to predict more exact tuning frequency. The result is proved by a lot of experiments. From combination of fluid analysis and acoustic analysis, up stream position is effective location of resonator concerning turbulence motion of fluid.
