  • Glass wool is a material that has been used as a heat insulator in various fields including construction industry. Since it is a nonflammable material, it does not generate toxic gases on fire, and thus public agencies recommend using glass wool as a heat insulator instead of other organic materials. However, repeated drying and wetting cycles can deteriorate thermal property of glass wool due to the shrinkage and reduction in pore size. For this reason, it needs to be replaced periodically, and waste materials are generated. This research aims to utilize waste glass wool as additives for increasing mechanical properties of concrete. According to the experimental results, it was found that glass wool has weak pozzolanic activity, and beneficial effect on both compressive and flexural strength. The optimum amount found in this experimental work was 0.5% volumetric addition to the concrete.

  • In this study, the thermal conductivity, physical and mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate concretes with hollow micro sphere(HMS) are experimentally examined as a basic research for the development of structural insulation concrete. As the results of this experiment, in the case of concrete mixed with HMS, the value of slump has been reduced, so it is found that the dosage of superplasticizer should be increased. As the replacement ratio of HMS increases, it has shown that the compressive strength is somewhat decreased due to the low interfacial adhesion strength of HMS. But the thermal conductivity is found to be greatly improved with the replacement ratio of HMS increases, the thermal conductivity of HMS shows the lower value of 68% at lightweight aggregate concrete and 32% of normal concrete. Also it is found that the compressive strength is decreased and thermal conductivity is increased as the water-cement ratio increases. The most outstanding for insulation performance is observed when using 20% of HMS and 50% of water-cement ratio.

  • The Jurassic granites, commercially called Yangu stone in the Pocheon-Euijeongbu area, have generally compact and coarse-grained textures, which could be classified into two types; grey granite(Gg) and light pink granite(Gp). Specific gravity, absorption ratio and prosity of Gg and Gp in physical property are 2.64 and 2.61, 0.32 % and 0.44 %, 0.86% and 1.13 %, respectively. These higher values of two latters of Gp than those of Gg are due to the more abundant microcracks in Gp. Compressive strength og Gg than those of Gg are due to more abundant microcracks in Gp. Compressive strength og Gg and Gp are 1,726 kg/cm2 and 1,717 kg/cm, respectively and bestrength has a positive proportion with Qz+Af+Pl(quartz+alkali feldspar+plagioclase) modes without trending with Bt+Ac(biotite+accessories). Tensile strength has the positive proportions with Qz+Af+Pl and Bt+Ac. While Bt+Ac has a negative trend with abrasive hardness, Qz+A+Pl shows a positive one. These may suggest Qz+Af+Pl mainly affects on strenghts potentional dimension stone than Gp.

  • This paper investigates effects of rubber inclusion on the strength and physical characteristics of rubber.added composite geomaterial (CGM) in which dredged soils, crumb rubber, and bottom ash are reused for recycling. Several series of test specimens were prepared at 5 different percentages of rubber content (i.e. 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil) and three different percentages of bottom ash content (i.e. 0%, 50% and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil). The mixed soil specimens were subjected to unconfined compression test and elastic wave test to investigate their unconfined compressive strengths and small strain properties. The values of bulk unit weight of the CGM with bottom ash content of 0% and 100% decrease from 14kN/$m^3$ to 11kN/$m^3$ and 15kN/$m^3$ to 12kN/$m^3$, respectively, as rubber content increases, because the rubber had a specific gravity of 1.13. The test results indicated that the rubber content and bottom ash content were found to influence the strength and stress-strain behavior of CGM. Overall, the unconfined compressive strength, and shear modulus were found to decrease with increasing rubber content. Among the samples tested in this study, those with a lower rubber content exhibited sand-like behavior and a higher shear modulus. Samples with a higher rubber content exhibited rubber-like behavior and a lower shear modulus. The CGM with 100% bottom ash could be used as alternative backfill material better than CGM with 0% bottom ash. The results of elastic wave tests indicate that the higher rubber content, the lower shear modulus (G).

  • Recently, various researches on the utilization of carbon nanotube(CNT) with superior electrical conductivity and large surface areas into concrete have been actively conducted. Thus, mechanical and thermal properties of cement-flyash composites were evaluated concerning the CNT replacements. Based on the low binder-to-water ratio, the cement composites were produced with 0.2 % and 0.5 % of CNT solids. The compressive strengths with various ages, isothermal calorimetry measurement, SEM analysis, thermal conductivity of cement composites and thermal gravimetry analysis were implemented. As the amount of CNT addition was increased, the thermal conductivity of cement composites were also increased. Also, there was no significant mechanical property differences between mixtures with and without CNTs.

  • According to the recent community-based structures enlargement, specification, and diversification. It needs appropriate construction materials in terms of intensity and environmental aspects. Thus, in manufacturing the cement using micro limestone powder which is main material. It is also expected to save energies and reduces $CO_2$, by using the blast furnace slag and fly ash which are mitigated environmental load construction materials that emerged. In this research, The durability aspect tries to be grasped considering the chemical property according to the coherence of the hydration product. Consequently, The compressive strength was measured over 30 Mpa on 3rd. In addition, according to the content of the limestone powder, the setting time is promoted. It has the feature expanded in the length change. And it is determined because the possibility of replacing the existing for construction material such as it is measured compared with the time to use the portland cement usually that flexural strength is high with the age 7 days ago, so it is sufficient.

  • In the fabrication of steel bridges, blast cleaning prior to painting is carried out on the steel members to clean the forged surface and to increase the adhesive property of the applied painting systems. The effect of blast cleaning on the fatigue strength improvement of the weld joints, however, is not clear. In this study, Almen strips and steel specimens were blast-treated, conforming to ten types of blast-cleaning conditions deducted from the blast-cleaning conditions of seven steel structure fabrication companies. The arc height, roughness, hardness, and compressive residual stress were measured before and after the implementation of the ten blast-cleaning methods, and the relationship between the blast conditions and the measured values was studied. The geometry of the weld toe and the compressive residual stress near the weld toe were also measured before and after the blast cleaning of the butt-welded joints, and fatigue tests were carried out on the butt weld joints. The test results showed that blast cleaning significantly increases the fatigue strength and limit.

  • In this work, we constructed the sulfur-solidified materials using coal bottom ash from four thermal power stations in Korea and investigated their practical data for the production of industrial construction compounds. To manufacture the sulfur-solidified materials, we used a continuous mixer with the uniaxial screw-type. Also, coal bottom ash was used as a fine aggregate below 1.2 mm because of the operation characteristics for the continuous mixer. When the sulfur-solidified materials were produced with diverse sulfur concentrations (15, 20, 25, 30 wt%), compressive strength properties were analyzed. In addition, when the coal bottom ash was used with a high calcium oxide content, crack was found in the test product and pH of submerged liquid was above 12. These experimental results could be effectively applied to the recycling technology of coal bottom ash.

  • In this study, unidirectional and plain woven carbon fiber reinforced magnesium matrix composite laminates were fabricated by the liquid pressing infiltration process, and evolutions of the microstructure and compressive strength of the composite laminates under corrosion were investigated by static immersion tests. In the case of the unidirectional composite laminate, the main microstructural damage during immersion appeared as a form of corrosion induced cracks, which were formed at both CF/Mg interfaces and the interfaces between layers. On the otherhand, wrap/fill interface cracks were mainly formed in the plain woven composite laminate, without any cracks at the CF/Mg interface. The formation of these cracks was considered to be associated with internal thermal residual stress, which was generated during cooling after the fabrication process of these materials. As a consequence of the corrosion induced cracks, the thickness of both laminates increased in directions vertical to the fibers with increasing immersion time. With increasing immersion time, the compressive strengths of both composite laminates also decreased continuously. It was found that the plain woven composite laminates have superior corrosion resistance and stability under a corrosive condition than unidirectional laminates.

  • This study investigates the effects of nano silica (NS) and micro steel fiber on the properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The experimental consists of three groups, each one with five percentages of NS content (0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) in addition to the 20% silica fume and 20% quartz powder proportioned according to the weight of cement added to the mixtures. In addition, three percentages of micro steel fibers (0%, 1% and 2%) were considered. Different mixtures with varying percentages of NS and micro steel fibers were prepared to set the water-to-binder ratio, such as 0.16% and 1.8% superplasticizer proportioned according the weight of the binder materials. The fresh properties, mechanical properties and elevated temperatures of the mixtures were calculated. Then, the results from the microstructure analyses were compared with that of the reference mixtureand it was found that 6% replacement of cement with NS was optimum replacement level. When the NS content was increased from 0% to 6%, the air content and permeability of the mixture decreased by 35% and 39%, the compressive and tensile strength improved by 21% and 18% and the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity increased by 20% and 11.5%, respectively. However, the effect of micro steel fibres on the compressive strength was inconclusive. The overall results indicate that micro steel fibres have the potential to improve the tensile strength, flexure strength and modulus of elasticity of the UHPC. The use of 6% NS together with 1% micro-steel fiber increased the concrete strength and reduce the cost of concrete mix.
