Effects of Re-Peening on the Compressive Residual Stress and Fatigue Life of Al7075-T6 (Al7075-T6의 압축잔류응력 및 피로 수명에 미치는 재피닝의 효과)

  • The effects of re-peening on the compressive residual stress and fatigue life of Al7075-T6 were investigated. The compressive residual stress induced on the surface of components by shot peening is known to increase the fatigue life. However, the fatigue load relaxes the compressive residual stress of components. Re-peening is a technique to again induce the relaxed compressive residual stress and increase the total fatigue life of components. In this study, the re-peening process was applied to fatigue-loaded specimens. The compressive residual stress and fatigue life were examined for re-peened specimens with fatigue ratios of 30%, 50%, and 70%. The results showed that the compressive residual stress of the specimens was relaxed under the fatigue load. The re-peening process significantly increases the compressive residual stress and total fatigue life.

  • Nowadays, many components used in machinery industry is required lightness and high strength. The shot-peening method is used in order to improve the fatigue life of spring steel(JIS G SUP-9) which is used in suspension of automobile. The compressive residual is induced in this shot-peening process. This paper investigated the effect of the residual compressive stress on the fatigue crack growth characteristics. Main results are summarized as follows. 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the level of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, it does not improve the fatigue life comparing when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.

  • The compressive fatigue tests on the closed cell Al-Si-Ca alloy foams with two different thicknesses were performed using a load ratio of 0.1. The quasi-static and cyclic compressive behaviors were obtained respectively. The fatigue stress-life (S-N) curves were evaluated from the obtained cyclic compressive behaviors. S-N curves were presented for the onset of progressive shortening. It turned out that the fatigue strength showed higher value for the thicker foam and the onset of shortening of thinner foam took place earlier. The crushing was found to initiate in a single band which broadens gradually with additional fatigue cycles. Progressive shortening of the specimen took place due to a combination of low cycle fatigue failure and cyclic ratcheting.

  • Recently the steel parts used for automiles and trains are required to be used under higher stress than ever before in need of the weight down. However, threr are a lot of problems with developing such of fatigue strength and fatigue life are mainly focused on by adopting residual stress. And got the following characteristics from crack growth test carried out stress ratio. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Un-peening material. And Compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue. So we cam obtain fallowings.   • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1)Compressive residual stress decreases in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2)The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature increases below $\Delta$K=17~19MPa (3)It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compressive residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • Antifatigue failure technology take an important the part of current industries. Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress by shot peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in stress ratio(R=0.1, 0.3, 0.6)was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. There is difference between shot peening specimen and unpeening specimen. Fatigue crack growth rate of shot peening specimen was lower than that of unpeening specimen. Fatigue lift shows more improvement in the shot peening material than in the unpeening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation. That is the constrained force about plasticity deformation was strengthened by resultant stress, which resulted from plasticity deformation and compressive residual stress in the process of fatigue crack propagation.

(4) It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compress residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • Second step shot peening was applied on both smooth specimen and U-notch specimen in order to investigate the stress distribution and the improvement in fatigue strength. Various experiments and measurements such as rotary bending fatigue test and the measurement of compressive residual stress were performed. The results showed that the fatigue strength of second step shot peened specimens increased by 34 percent compared to that of unpeened ones. Compressive residual stress also considerably increased, which resulted in the increase of fatigue strength. finite element analysis showed that shot peening is effective in decreasing the bending stress by external force. The effectiveness of shot peening in reducing the compressive residual stress was anticipated by the superposition of the concentrated stress and the compressive residual stress.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the compressive strength, compressive fatigue strength, surface hardness, water sorption and solubility of eight different posterior restorative composite resins. Eight composite resins were tested for their strength of the compressive and compressive fatigue with prepared two different types of specimens (I and T-type) using a Instron universal testing machine (model No. 1332). The hardness was measured with a Knoop hardness tester (MVH-2, Tokyo) for each cylindrical specimen, 7mm in diameter and 5mm thick. The water sorption and solubility were evaluated with the prepared composite resin disks, 20mm in diameter and 1mm thick. The results were as follows: 1. The compressive strength, compressive fatigue strength and hardness were noticed to be Increased by increasing the volume content of filler. 2. The compressive strength was appeared to be independent on the type of specimen, but the compressive fatigue strength was found to be greatly influenced by the type of specimens. 3. The composite resins having higher compressive strength had also higher compressive fatigue limits. 4. The compressive fatigue limits at $10^5$ stress cycles were about 50-80% of the compressive strength and were showen to be dependent on the materials and type of specimens. 5. The larger the filler particle size was, the lower was the water sorption. And the water sorption of BIS-GMA resin was higher than that of urethane resin. 6. The visible light-cured composite resin had a higher value of solubility than the chemically- cured composite resin. And the solubility tended to decrease by increasing the volume content of filler.
