  • In constructions of dams and ports structure, gravels are used as principle structural materials. Gravels have different material property compared with other materials like soil and concretes, etc. For example, material properties of gravels obtained from normal triaxial compression test are usually overestimated due to scale and penetration effects. Also, material properties of gravels under dynamic loads are the main interest when structural behavior of rockfill dam under earthquake loads is analyzed. The development of large triaxial compression apparatus is needed for the better estimation of material property of gravel. This paper reports work in progress to development of large triaxial compression apparatus.

  • The complexity of image compression algorithms has increased in order to improve image compression efficiency. One way to resolve high computational complexity is parallel processing. However, entropy coding, which is lossless compression, does not fit into the parallel processing form because of the correlation between consecutive symbols. This paper proposes a new application-specific instruction set processor (ASIP) platform by adding new context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) instructions to the existing platform to quickly process a variety of entropy coding. The newly added instructions work without conflicts with all other existing instructions of the platform, providing the flexibility to handle many coding standards with fast processing speeds. CABAC software is implemented for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and the performance of the proposed ASIP platform was verified with a field programmable gate array simulation.

  • The purpose of the work is to improve comfort of a car seat, especially dynamic comfort which affects driver's discomfort during the long time driving. Definition of dynamic comfort was made before the investigation of which parameter affects seat comfort. In order to optimize design parameters so as to maximize seat comfort as well as to know the cause of discomfort, benchmarking on a target vehicle and competitive vehicles was performed, which showed both the vibration transmission characteristics and the compression set due to dynamic loading should be reduced. As a solution ball rebounds was increased by about 10% of the original foam, which showed reduction of S.E.A.T. value by 10% and of compression set by 60%.

  • The compression behavior of semi-solid materials is studied from a viewpoint of yield criteria and analysis methods. To describe the behavior of materials in semi-solid state, several theories have been proposed by extending the concept of plasticity of porous compressible materials. In the present work, the upper-bound method and the finite element method are used to model the simple compression process using yield criteria of Kuhn and Doraivelu. Segregation between solid and liquid which cause defect of product is analysed for Sn-15%Pb and A356 alloys during deformation in semi-solid state. The comparison of analyses is made according to yield criteria and analysis methods. In addition, the analysis result for semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloy is compared with the experimental result of Charreyron et al..

  • In this work, in-cylinder pressure measurements and high-speed direct imaging of the flame were performed in an optically accessible single cylinder diesel engine with premixed charge compression ignition combustion and a narrow injection angle. The results show that the frequency ranges of pressure ringing were 8.35 to 9 kHz and 12..2 to 13.1 kHz. The frequencies of the flame movement were shown as 8.7 kHz and 13 kHz. It was found that there is a direct relationship between the pressure ringing and the flame movement.

  • This paper attempts to determine the inclination of the compression strut within variable angle truss models for RC beams loaded in shear-flexure through a proposed semi-analytical approach. A truss unit is used to analyze a reinforced concrete beam, by the principle of virtual work under the truss analogy. The inclination of the compression strut is then theoretically derived. The concrete contribution is addressed by utilizing the compatibility condition within each truss unit. Comparisons are made between the predicted and published experimental results of the seventy one RC beams with respect to the shear strength and the inclined angle of the compression strut at this state to investigate the adequacy of the proposed semi-analytical approach.

  • This work describes a method of determining material parameters included in recrystallization and grain growth models. Focus is on the recrystallization and grain growth models of Ni-Fe base superalloy, Alloy 718. High temperature compression tests at different strain, strain rate and temperature conditions were chosen to determine the material parameters of dynamic recrystallization model. The critical strain and dynamically recrystallized grain size and fraction at various process variables were quantitated with the microstructual analysis and strain-stress relationships of the compression tests. Besides, isothermal heat treatments were utilized to fit the material constants included in the grain growth model. Verification of the determined material parameters is carried out by comparing the measured data obtained from other compression tests.

  • Conventional efficiencies of the adiabatic compression process such as isentropic efficiency and polytropic efficiency can be explained as exergetic efficiencies replacing the reference atmospheric temperature with the temperature which can be determined in the process itself. So that, other efficies such as maximum isentropic efficiency can be defined by giving proper reference temperatures. By applying the same logical principles, exergetic and other rational efficiencies for the non-adiabatic compression process are also defined and discussed for their physical meanings and reasonable engineering applications.

  • Experimental work undertaken to investigate the behaviour of lead-rubber bearings under compression and a combination of compression and shear or rotation has been reported on elsewhere. However, it is difficult to determine the state of stress within the bearings in terms of the applied forces and the interaction between the lead plug and the steel shims and elastomeric layers. In order to supply some of the missing information about the stress-strain state within the bearings, an analytical study using the finite element method was carried out. The available experimental results were used to validate the model and although agreement was not as good as expected (on account of difficulties in modelling the lead plug), the analyses did provide some information about the state of the stress within the bearing.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the performance of a vapor compression cycle equipped with an ejector as an expansion device to improve the COP by reducing the expansion loss and compressor work. The simulation is carried out using a model based on the conservation of mass, energy and momentum in the ejector. From the results of the simulation, the vapor compression cycle equipped with an ejector showed a maximum COP improvement of 14.0% when using R134a refrigerant and 16.8% when using R1234yf. In addition, the performance of the system with an ejector represents the increased performance as the temperature difference between condensing and evaporating increased.
