Side friction is often neglected in the analysis of the results of a consolidation test when the specimen has a high ratio of diameter to height. As the height of a specimen increases, however, side friction becomes important. This paper presents an investigation of the effect of side friction on consolidation test results for normally consolidated kaolinite slurry. Consolidation tests were performed to obtain settlement, pore pressure, compressibility, and hydraulic conductivity of kaolinite slurry. The compressibility relationship is corrected for side friction using a modified form of Taylor (1942) analytical solution. Numerical simulations using the CS2 piecewise-linear model are compared with settlement and excess pore pressure measurements. Experimental results show improved agreement with a modified CS2 model in which the effect of side friction is considered. The numerical and experimental results indicate that the side friction is an important factor affecting the rate of consolidation as well as the compressibility relationship for the specimen.

Organic soils exhibit problematic properties such as high compressibility and low shear strength; these properties may cause differential settlement or failure in structures built on such soils. Organic soil removal or stabilization are the most important methods to overcome geotechnical problems related to peat soils' engineering characteristics. This paper presents soil mechanical intervention for stabilization of peat with sand columns and focuses on a comparison between the mechanical characteristics of undisturbed peat and peat stabilized with 20%, 30% and 40% of sand on the laboratory scale. Cylindrical columns were extruded in different diameters through a nearly undisturbed peat sample in the laboratory and filled with sand. By adding sand columns to peat, higher permeability, higher shear strength and a faster consolidation was achieved. The sample with 70% peat and 30% sand displayed the most reliable compressibility properties. This can be attributed to proper drainage provided by sand columns for peat in this specific percentage. It was observed that the granular texture of sand also increased the friction angle of peat. The addition of 30% sand led to the highest shear strength among all mixtures considered. The peat samples with 40% sand were sampled with two and three sand columns and tested in direct shear and consolidation tests to evaluate the influence of the number and geometry of sand columns. Samples with three sand columns showed higher compressibility and shear strength. Following the results of this laboratory study it appears that the introduction of sand columns could be suitable for geotechnical peat stabilization in the field scale.

In order to predict the cooling performance of a regenerative cooling channel using hydrocarbon fuel operating in the supercritical region, it is essential to predict the thermodynamic properties. In this study, a comparative analysis was performed on two-parameter equations of state (SRK(Soave-Redlich-Kwong), PR(Peng-Robinson) equations of state) and three-parameter equations of state (RK-PR equations of state) to appropriately predict density and specific heat according to the critical compressibility factor of polymer hydrocarbons. Representatively, n-dodecane fuel with low critical compressibility factor and JP-10 fuel with high critical compressibility factor were selected, and an appropriate equation of state was presented when predicting the thermodynamic properties of the two fuels. Finally, the prediction results of density and specific heat were compared and verified with NIST REFPROP data.

In this research, an analytical solution for the coefficient of permeability of soils during consolidation is suggested. The pore pressure and the flow rate measurements at different locations during consolidation are utilized. The void ratio and volume compressibility of soils under consolidation are also estimated. A large consolidation testing device, possible in both vertical and radial drainage is designed and manufactured. And consolidation test with kaolinite soils were performed under radially inward drainage direction. Pore pressures in varying radial distances and flow rate with time were measured as well as vertical deformations. From the test results, the changes of permeability, volume compressibility and void ratio under consolidation and their spatial variations are estimated. Thus the proposed solution is verified by comparing with the experimentally estimated test results. In addition, it is confirmed that permeability, void ratio and volume compressibility decrease as consolidation and loading steps progress. Also, these soil characteristics increase with radial distant from drainage boundary, where lowest values observed, and slightly decrease as approaching undrained boundary.
Intermolecular interactions were studied for binary mixtures of 2-propanol + cyclohexane, n-hexane, benzene, toluene, o-, m- and p-xylenes by measuring ultrasonic speeds (u) over the entire range of composition at 298.15 K and 308.15 K. From these results the deviation in ultrasonic speed was calculated. These results were fitted to the Redlich-Kister equation to derive the binary coefficients along with standard deviations between the experimental and calculated data. Acoustic parameters such as excess isentropic compressibility ($K_s^E$), intermolecular free length ($L_f$) and available volume ($V_a$) were also derived from ultrasonic speed data and Jacobson's free length theory. The ultrasonic speed data were correlated by Nomoto's relation, Van Dael's mixing relation, impedance dependence relation, and Schaaff's collision factor theory. Van Dael's relation gives the best prediction of u in the binary mixtures containing aliphatic hydrocarbons. The ultrasonic speed data and isentropic compressibility were further analyzed in terms of Jacobson's free length theory.

The purpose of this study is to find at the basic data for the appropriate compressibility of the pillows for the Koreans as well as, for the appropriate conditions to establish the estimating criterion for the pillows on the market place. This paper also aim to grasp thr compressibility of the materials used to make the pillows for sale. The appropriate compressive rate of the pillows have been investigated by sensuous test. The compressive rate, recovery rate, and decreasing rate of compression and recovery have been investigated by means of ergonomic and physical experiments. The results were as follows; 1) By sensuous test, the compressive rate of the pillows for the most comfortable state turns up $45\%{\pm}5\%$ in men and women. 2) As for the compressive rate and recovery rate of the eight pillow materials on market, panya, duck feather two kinds of synthetic fiber are highest, wood is lowest. 3) The compressive rate of panya, duck feather, and two kinds of fiber is within the range of the comfort by sensuous test. 4) In the durability of the compressive rate and recovery rate against the repeated use of the pillows, duck feather is in the highest grade, panya is the lowest grade and the others are graded between two.
Vast parts of the east of Tabriz city have been covered by Baghmisheh formation marls. These marls can be classified into three types based on their color as identified in yellow, green, and gray marls. Many high-rise buildings and other projects were founded and now is constructing on these marls. Baghmisheh formation marls are classified as stiff soil to very weak rock, therefore they undergo considerable consolidation settlement under foundation loads. This study presents the physical properties and consolidation behavior of these marls. According to the XRD tests, major clay minerals of marls are Illite, Kaolinite, Montmorillonite and Chloride. Uniaxial compressive strength are 100-250, 300-480 and 500-560 kPa for yellow, green and gray marls, respectively. Consolidation and creep behavior of Baghmisheh marls investigated by using of one dimensional consolidation apparatus under stress level up to 5 MPa. The results indicate that yellow marls have high compressibility, settlement and deformation modules. Green marls have an intermediate compressibility and settlement and while gray marls have low compressibility and settlement and from the foundation point of view have high stability. According to the creep test results, all types of marls have not been entered to progressive creep phase up to pressure 5 MPa.

A numerical analysis of the liquid-gas two-phase flows has been conducted. The incompressible equations of the two-phase flows were solved by the artificial compressibility method with the CLSVOF interface capturing method. To analyze the grid dependency of CLSVOF, a numerical analysis of Zalesak's disk and three-dimensional liquid deformation problem were carried out, and the reconstruction of deformation was investigated. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability was numerically analyzed by applying the equations of incompressible two-phase flow, and the surface instability was observed.

This study aimed to identify changes in the physical properties of artificial mineral-fiber materials used as building insulation that had been installed in the outer walls of buildings for a long time. To achieve this goal, glass fiber and rock wool were collected from outer walls in actual buildings and their acoustic and thermal performances were measured. These were compared with measurements from similar products manufactured recently. The results showed that old, used samples had a lower sound absorption coefficient compared to recently manufactured materials. The old samples also displayed increased compressibility compared to new materials. For example, the compressibility difference for glass wool was 7.32 mm. Old samples had a dynamic stiffness $1.28MN/m^3$ higher than new material samples. The thermal conductivity of both old and new samples increased within creasing temperature. They showed similar results at temperatures between 0 and $20^{\circ}C$.

This paper investigated stretchability with fabric mechanical properties of one-way and two-way stretch fabrics. For this purpose, 1-way and 2-way woven fabrics were prepared using 150d PET/spandex covered yarns with different thermal treatment according to 4 kinds of wet thermal machines subsequently, fabric mechanical properties were measured and compared with regular PET fabrics. In addition, the garment formability of stretch fabrics was predicted and compared to regular fabrics according to wet thermal treatment. The weft stretchability of 2-way stretch fabric was about 10% higher than the 1-way stretch fabric. The compressibility of the stretch fabrics was 1.5 times higher than regular fabrics. The compressibility of stretch fabrics treated with CPB and rope type wet thermal machine showed higher values than other types of wet thermal machines. The bending rigidity of 2-way stretch fabric was lower than 1-way stretch fabric. Shear rigidity of 2-way stretch fabric was higher than 1-way and regular fabrics. Garment formability of 2-way stretch fabric was higher than regular and one-way stretch fabrics. Garment formability of 2-way stretch fabrics treated with wet thermal conditions under low tension showed the highest values.
