  • Multi-view video plus depth (MVD) has been widely used owing to its effectiveness in three-dimensional data representation. Using MVD, color videos with only a limited number of real viewpoints are compressed and transmitted along with captured or estimated depth videos. Because the synthesized views are generated from decoded real views, their original reference views do not exist at either the transmitter or receiver. Therefore, it is challenging to define an efficient metric to evaluate the quality of synthesized images. We propose a novel metric-the reduced-reference quality metric. First, the effects of depth distortion on the quality of synthesized images are analyzed. We then employ the high correlation between the local depth distortions and local color characteristics of the decoded depth and color images, respectively, to achieve an efficient depth quality metric for each real view. Finally, the objective quality metric of the synthesized views is obtained by combining all the depth quality metrics obtained from the decoded real views. The experimental results show that the proposed quality metric correlates very well with full reference image and video quality metrics.

  • The most difficult of implementation PACS is large amount of data. Therefore, PACS needs mass storage, as well as rapid transmission time. Consequently, medical images needs compression when stored in PACS. WT(wavelet transform) was announced by Ingrid Daubechies and Stephane Mallat, WT was methods of signal analysis by a base functions set same as Fourie transform. This paper estimated an efficiency, that experimental medical images compressed by DWT. The result of estimated, we are knows effectiveness that display to remained signal in low frequency region after 4-level DWT form $512{\times}512{\times}2^8$ input images. Compression ratio of images by 4-level DWT was 1:16. It is a high compression ratio, the other side has a problem appears on staircase phenomenon.

  • One of the main purpose of multiple-view image processing technology is support realistic 3D image to device user by using multiple viewpoint display devices and compressed data restoration devices. This paper proposes a multiple view image synthesis scheme based on RAM disk which makes possible to browse 3D images generated by applying effective composing method to real time input stereo images. The proposed scheme first converts input images to binary image. We applies edge detection algorithm such as Sobel algorithm and Prewiit algorithm to find edges used to evaluate disparities from images of 4 multi-cameras. In addition, we make use of time interval between hardware trigger and software trigger to solve the synchronization problem which has stated ambiguously in related studies. We use a unique identifier on each snapshot of images for distributed environment. With respect of performance results, the proposed scheme takes 0.67 sec in each binary array. to transfer entire images which contains left and right side with disparity information for high quality 3D image browsing. We conclude that the proposed scheme is suitable for real time 3D applications.

  • While the SGML(standard generalized markup language) tend to be used in multimedia document management systems, still binary document images are widely used in servicing the information of printed documents at digital libraries. But the printed documents are scanned in 200 dpi resolution and the scanned binary document images are compressed by the ITU-T T.6 method, so they have difficulties in representing them in good quality and compressing them very efficiently. In this paper, by considering quality of the binary document images and expandability and effectiveness of database of them, we show that the suitable scanning resolution of them is 600 dpi and the best compression method is the JBIG. A staged service strategy of them is also suggested to solve the difficulty caused from long decompression time of the JBIG by analyzing characteristics of retrieving the binary document images in monitor and printer. In experiments for several typical binary document images, high compression rate of the JBIG and effectiveness of the staged service strategy are verified.

  • In this paper, we propose an integral image compression method to improve the coding efficiency. As the characteristics of integral images are various according to the distance between a camera and objects, complexity of the objects and background, etc, the coding efficiency can be improved by applying a coding method adaptive to the characteristics. In addition, as the integral images are compressed by the unit of elemental images, the coding efficiency can be improved. by employing a coding method optimized to the coding direction of elemental images. Therefore, the proposed method remaps an integral image with six kinds of mapping rules, and then the conventional 3D-DCT based compression method is applied to the remapped images. Finally, we perform the rate-distortion optimization to choose the best of the mapping rules. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields high gains in image quality and bit-rate.

  • Fractal image compression algorithm has been studied mostly not in the view of hardware but software. However, a general processor by software can't decode fractal compressed images in real-time. Therefore, it is necessary that we develop a fast dedicated hardware. However, design examples of dedicated hardware are very rare. In this paper, we designed a quadtree fractal-based compressed image decoder which can decode $256{\times}256$ gray-scale images in real-time and used two power-down methods. The first is a hardware-optimized simple post-processing, whose role is to remove block effect appeared after reconstruction, and which is easier to be implemented in hardware than non-2' exponents weighted average method used in conventional software implementation, lessens costs, and accelerates post-processing speed by about 69%. Therefore, we can expect that the method dissipates low power and low energy. The second is to design a power dissipation in the multiplier can be reduced by about 28% with respect to a general array multiplier which is known efficient for low power design in the size of 8 bits or smaller. Using the above two power-down methods, we designed decoder's core block in 3.3V, 1 poly 3 metal, $0.6{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.

  • As the population of HDTV is growing, among many useful features of modern set top boxes (STBs) or digital video recorders (DVRs), video browsing, visual bookmark, and picture-in-picture capabilities are very frequently required. These features typically employ reduced-size versions of video frames, or thumbnail images. Most thumbnail generation approaches generate DC images directly from a compressed video stream. A discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient for which the frequency is zero in both dimensions in a compressed block is called a DC coefficient and is simply used to construct a DC image. If a block has been encoded with field DCT, a few AC coefficients are needed to generate the DC image in addition to a DC coefficient. However, the bit length of a codeword coded with variable length coding (VLC) cannot be determined until the previous VLC codeword has been decoded, thus it is required that all codewords should be fully decoded regardless of their necessary for DC image generation. In this paper, we propose a method especially for fast DC image generation from an I-frame using multiple-symbol lookup table (mLUT). The experimental results show that the method using the mLUT improves the performance greatly by reducing LUT count by 50$\%$.

  • This paper proposes an efficient face recognition system using phase difference between the face images. We use a Karhunen-Loeve transform for image compression and reconstruction, and obtain the phase difference by using normalized inner product of the two compressed images. The proposed system is rotation and light-invariant due to using the normalized phase difference, and somewhat shift-invariant due to applying the cosine function. The faster recognition than the conventional system and incremental training is possible in the proposed system. Simulations are conducted on the ORL images of 40 persons, in which each person has 10 facial images, and the result shows that the faster recognition than conventional recognizer using convolution network under the same recognition error rate of 8% does.

  • In Ubiquitous communication environment, various conversions of images are essential, and most digital images are compressed by standard methods such as the Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG) and Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) which are based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). In this paper, various image resizing algorithms in the DCT domain are analyzed, and a new image resizing algorithm, which shows superior performance compared with the conventional methods, is proposed. For arbitrary-ratio image resizing in the DCT domain, several blocks of $8{\times}8$ DCT coefficients are converted into one block using the conversion formula in the proposed algorithm, and the size of the inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) is decided optimally. The performance is analyzed by comparing the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) between original images and converted images. The performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the conventional algorithm, since the correlation of pixels in images is utilized more efficiently.

  • In this paper, we proposed a lossless compression algorithm of medical images which is essential technique in picture archive and communication system. Mammographic image and magnetic resonance image in among medical images used in this study, proposed a region growing segmentation algorithm for compression of these images. A proposed algorithm was partition by three sub region which error image, discontinuity index map, high order bit data from original image. And generated discontinuity index image data and error image which apply to a region growing algorithm are compressed using JBIG(Joint Bi-level Image experts Group) algorithm that is international hi-level image compression standard and proper image compression technique of gray code digital Images. The proposed lossless compression method resulted in, on the average, lossless compression to about 73.14% with a database of high-resolution digital mammography images. In comparison with direct coding by JBIG, JPEG, and Lempel-Ziv coding methods, the proposed method performed better by 3.7%, 7.9% and 23.6% on the database used.
