An accurate feed formulation is essential for optimizing feed efficiency and minimizing feed cost for swine and poultry production. Because energy and amino acid (AA) account for the major cost of swine and poultry diets, a precise determination of the availability of energy and AA in feedstuffs is essential for accurate diet formulations. Therefore, the methodology for determining the availability of energy and AA should be carefully selected. The total collection and index methods are 2 major procedures for estimating the availability of energy and AA in feedstuffs for swine and poultry diets. The total collection method is based on the laborious production of quantitative records of feed intake and output, whereas the index method can avoid the laborious work, but greatly relies on accurate chemical analysis of index compound. The direct method, in which the test feedstuff in a diet is the sole source of the component of interest, is widely used to determine the digestibility of nutritional components in feedstuffs. In some cases, however, it may be necessary to formulate a basal diet and a test diet in which a portion of the basal diet is replaced by the feed ingredient to be tested because of poor palatability and low level of the interested component in the test ingredients. For the digestibility of AA, due to the confounding effect on AA composition of protein in feces by microorganisms in the hind gut, ileal digestibility rather than fecal digestibility has been preferred as the reliable method for estimating AA digestibility. Depending on the contribution of ileal endogenous AA losses in the ileal digestibility calculation, ileal digestibility estimates can be expressed as apparent, standardized, and true ileal digestibility, and are usually determined using the ileal cannulation method for pigs and the slaughter method for poultry. Among these digestibility estimates, the standardized ileal AA digestibility that corrects apparent ileal digestibility for basal endogenous AA losses, provides appropriate information for the formulation of swine and poultry diets. The total quantity of energy in feedstuffs can be partitioned into different components including gross energy (GE), digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), and net energy based on the consideration of sequential energy losses during digestion and metabolism from GE in feeds. For swine, the total collection method is suggested for determining DE and ME in feedstuffs whereas for poultry the classical ME assay and the precision-fed method are applicable. Further investigation for the utilization of ME may be conducted by measuring either heat production or energy retention using indirect calorimetry or comparative slaughter method, respectively. This review provides information on the methodology used to determine accurate estimates of AA and energy availability for formulating swine and poultry diets.
Magnetic and structural properties of $(CoFe_2O_4)_{1-x}(Y_3Fe_5O_{12})_x$ powders (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1) grown by a conventional ceramic method were investigated using X-ray diffractormeter (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The XRD results for the powders annealed at 120$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that no other peak was observed except for the ones from cobalt ferrite and the garnet powder. SEM micrographs indicated that cobalt ferrite and garnet powders were aggregated and completely formed together. It was hard to identify which part of the powders was the garnet or the cobalt ferrite. Mossbauer spectra for powders grown separately and mixed mechanically consisted of sub-spectra of cobalt ferrite and garnet, however, powders annealed together had an extra sub-spectrum, which was related with the interaction between iron ions at the grain surfaces of cobalt ferrite and the garnet: cobalt ferrite and garnet particles were located very closely. The value of the saturation magnetization measured by a VSM as a function of composition ratio agreed very well with the ones based on the theoretical calculation.

The treatment of chemically stable perflourocompounds (PFCs) requires a large amount of energy. An energy efficient arc plasma system has been developed to overcome such disadvantage. $CF_4$, $SF_6$ and $NF_3$ were injected into the plasma torch directly, and net plasma power was estimated from the measurement of thermal efficiency of the system. Effects of net plasma power, waste gas flow rate and additive gases on the destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of PFCs were examined. The calculation of thermodynamic equilibrium composition was also conducted to compare with experimental results. The average thermal efficiency was ranged from 60 to 66% with increasing waste gas flow rate, while DRE of PFCs was decreased with increasing gas flow rate. On the other hand, DRE of each PFCs was increased with the increasing input power. Maximum DREs of $CF_4$, $SF_6$ and $NF_3$ were 4%, 15% and 90%, respectively, without reaction gas at the fixed input power and waste gas flow rate of 3 kW and 70 L/min. A rapid increase of DRE was found using hydrogen or oxygen additional gases. Hydrogen was more effective than oxygen to decompose PFCs and to control by-products. The major by-product in the arc plasma process with hydrogen was hydrofluoric acid that is easy to be removed by a wet scrubber. DREs of $CF_4$, $SF_6$ and $NF_3$ were 25%, 39% and 99%, respectively, using hydrogen additional gas at the waste gas flow rate of 100 L/min and the input power of 3 kW.

This work investigated the characteristics of a packed-bed plasma reactor system and the performances of the plasma reactors connected in series or in parallel for the decomposition of ethylene. Before the discharge ignition, the effective capacitance of the ${\gamma}$-alumina packed-bed plasma reactor was larger than that of the reactor without any packing, but after the ignition the effective capacitance was similar to each other, regardless of the packing. The energy of electrons created by plasma depends mainly on the electric field intensity, and was not significantly affected by the gas composition in the range of 0~20% (v/v) oxygen (nitrogen : 80~100% (v/v)). Among the various reactive species generated by plasma, ground-state atomic oxygen and ozone are understood to be primarily involved in oxidation reactions, and as the electric field intensity increases, the amount of ground-state atomic oxygen relatively decreases while that of nitrogen atom increases. Even though there are many parameters affecting the performance of the plasma reactor such as a voltage, discharge power, gas flow rate and residence time, all parameters can be integrated into a single parameter, namely, specific input energy (SIE). It was experimentally confirmed that the performances of the plasma reactors connected in series or in parallel could be treated as a function of SIE alone, which simplifies the scale-up design procedure. Besides, the ethylene decomposition results can be predicted by the calculation using the rate constant expressed as a function of SIE.

This study investigated current status of rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways and drew the related issues to define specifications and design criteria regarding expressway rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways. Based on the investigation result, geometric structure specifications and improvement plans are suggested. The entry part of a rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways was divided into deceleration transition section, deceleration lane and entry connection road while the exit part was divided into exit connection road, acceleration lane and acceleration transition section. The optimum length was estimated by considering the main lane vehicle traveling speed, traveling speed at the beginning/end point of entry/exit connection roads, deceleration and acceleration. In addition, reasonable design criteria were suggested by dividing the parking section of rest area for drowsy drivers according to parking style and cross-section composition, and length of parking space and then considering the ratio of vehicles using rest area for drowsy drivers, the ratio of heavy vehicles, and the design speed within a rest area for drowsy drivers. It is believed that the suggested design criteria on rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways can be utilized in the future planning and maintenance of rest area for drowsy drivers. Additionally, the defined criteria on installing rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways will prevent traffic accidents in resting facilities and highways as well as improve usage and safety of them.
Deep sea core samples were taken in the southwestern part of the Ulleung Basin in order to characterize the properties of shallow gases in the sediment. Amount of shallow gases in the sediments were calculated by head space techniques, and chemical and isotopic compositions of hydrocarbon gases were analyzed. Geochemical analyses were carried out on the gas bearing sediments to find out relationship between natural gas contents and organic characteristics of the sediments. Seismic characteristics of shallow gases in the sediments were also examined in this study. The amount of the hydrocarbon gases in the sediments range from 0.01% to 11.25%. Calculation of volume of gas per volume of wet sediment varies from 0.1 to 82.0 ml HC/L wet sediment. Methane consists 98% of the total hydrocarbon gases except for two samples. Based on the methane content and isotopic composition$(\delta^{13}c)$: -94.31$\textperthousand$~-55.5$\textperthousand$), the hydrocarbon gases from the sediments are generated from bacterial activities of methanogenic microbes. Contents of hydrocarbon gases are variable from site to site. Volume of shallow gases in the sediments shows no apparent trends vs. either characteristics of organic matter or particle sizes of the sediments. Gas concentration is high in the area of seismic anomalies such as blanking zone or chimney structures in the section. Physicochemically the pore water and the formation water systems are saturated with gases in these areas. Concentration of hydrocarbon gases in the sediments in these area shows favorable condition for generation of gas hydrate, as far as the other conditions are satisfied.
This study was undertaken to provide a drinking water quality on the basis of physicochemical properties. In this study, the 25 samples of supply waters of the Taejon area were sampled twice (February and August in 1999). Hydrochemistry of the supply water belongs to the $Ca^{2+}$-${HCO_3}^{-1}$ type, whereas the supply water was characterized by the relatively significant enrichment of ${Ca}^{2+}$, ${Na}^{2+}$, ${K}^{2+}$, ${Cl}^{2+}$ ions and heavy metals compared to the original water from the Daecheong lake. Generally, the supply water has a mean values for $10.7^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 6.86 of pH, -12 mV of Eh, 88 ${\mu}S$/cm of EC and 70.379 mg/l of TDS in February, whereas the waters of the same sites in August are a slightly high temperature ($26.1^{\circ}C$), TDS (78.069 mg/l) and extremely high EC (442 ${\mu}S$/cm) value. These values are similar with physicochemical properties of the original lake water depending on the seasonal differences. Results of speciation calculation indicate that potentially toxic ions might exist mainly in the forms of free metal (${Cu}^{2+}$ or ${Zn}^{2+}$) and a small amount of ${CO_3}^{2-}$and ${OH}^{-}$in the supply water. The water seemed to be in equilibrium with kaolinite field of the normal stability diagrams for the natural water. Based on enrichment parameter of the supply water normalized by original lake water composition, the average value of those parameter can be calculated with nearly 1.00, but the those values for Cu+Zn possible source of decrepit pipe lines are 126.75 in February and 115.63 in August samples. The parameter values varied with sampling sites, however, do not exceed by chemistry of drinking water standard. Solid compounds remained on the membrane filter papers after filtration are adhered to pale yellow or yellowish brown colored dissolved solids and precipitates, which are coated by 0.02 to 0.35 mm thick per 500 ml with colloidal particles of about 1 to 2${\mu}m$ size. The particles are mainly Fe-Cu-Zn compounds and partly detected to Mn and Pb.
Many researches and policies have been carried out for saving energy in buildings. However, there are a few studies of thermal characteristics of wood-based materials that have been widely used as structural materials and finishing materials in buildings. In this study, thermal bridging areas were found to investigate thermal performance of residential building using non wood-based materials and wood-based materials. And heat transfer analysis of 16 case studies according to composition of structural materials and finishing materials was conducted. Also in this experiment, Physibel Trisco was used as the heat transfer analysis simulation tool, which conforms to the calculation method of ISO 10211. Analytical modeling was also carried out according to the ISO 10211, and the boundary temperature conditions were set at room temperature $20^{\circ}C$ and outdoor temperature $-11.3^{\circ}C$ (Seoul standard) according to the energy saving design standard in South Korea. Applied structures are classified according to the cases of concrete structure with non wood-based finishing materials, concrete structure with wood-based finishing materials and wood structure. Analyzed building elements were divided into a wall, a roof, an interlayer floor and a bottom floor. As a result, it can be confirmed that the thermal bridge of the concrete structure and wood structure were caused by the geometrical and material causes. In addition, the structural thermal bridge was caused in the discontinuity of the insulation in the concrete structure. Also it was confirmed that the linear heat transfer coefficient of the wall decreases when the wood-based materials are applied to the concrete structure.
