Cyclic loading test for concrete-filled hollow PC column produced using various inner molds

  • In this study, cyclic loading tests were conducted to assess the seismic performance of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete-filled hollow core precast concrete columns (HPCC) constructed using steel ducts and rubber tubes. The outer shells of HPCC, with a hollow ratio of 47%, were fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes, respectively. Two combinations of shear studs & long threaded bars or cross-deformed bars & V-ties were employed to ensure the structural integrity of the old concrete (outer shell) and new CIP concrete. Up to a drift ratio of 3.8%, the hysteresis loop, yielding stiffness, dissipated energy, and equivalent damping ratio of the HPCC specimens were largely comparable to those of the solid columns. Besides the similarities in cyclic load-displacement responses, the strain history of the longitudinal bars and the transverse confinement of the three specimens also exhibited similar patterns. The measured maximum moment exceeded the predicted moment according to ACI 318 by more than 1.03 times. However, the load reduction of the HPCC specimen after reaching peak strength was marginally greater than that of the solid specimen. The energy dissipation and equivalent damping ratios of the HPCC specimens were 20% and 25% lower than those of the solid specimen, respectively. Taking into account the overall results, the structural behavior of HPCC specimens fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes is deemed comparable to that of solid columns. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the two combinations for securing structural integrity functioned as expected, and that rubber air-tubes can be effectively used to create well-shaped hollow sections.

Flexural Stiffness and Characteristics of Vibration in CFT Truss Girder (CFT 트러스 거더의 휨강성 및 진동특성)

  • The primary objective of the present study was to attempt to quantify the effect of the existing codes for CFT composite section on initial section flexural stiffness, based on the measured vibration frequency of CFT truss girders. The formulae for the initial flexural stiffness of the composite sections in the different codes are compared with the free vibration test results. The results of the free vibration test on the CFT truss girders are in good agreement with the analysis results when used in ACI formulae. The free vibration analysis of CFT truss girders for different f/L ratios was conducted to determine how the natural frequency of the CFT truss girder is affected by different f/L ratios. The presence of the f/L ratios in CFT truss girders alters its frequencies of vibration because of the global stiffness of the CFT girders. The frequency in horizontal modes decreases as the f/L ratio increases. However, the frequency in vertical modes increases as the f/L ratio increases.

Optimum Design of Dynamic Vibration Absorber for Reducing Bending Vibrations of Two-Piece Vehicle Drive Line (2축 분할식 차량 구동라인의 굽힘진동 저감을 위한 동흡진기 최적설계)

  • In this paper, design parameters of dynamic vibration absorber, which is used to reduce bending vibrations of a vehicle drive line, is optimized. For obtaining the correct dynamic response characteristics, a flexible-body drive line is made by applying the flexibility data extracted from vibration analysis of propeller shafts to the drive line dynamic model. Inner tube mass, rubber stiffness and rubber damping coefficient of the dynamic vibration absorber are taken as design parameters for optimization. To minimize the vertical acceleration of the drive line, a second-order regression equation of the objective function is generated by performing the central composite experimental design with 3 factors, 2 levels and 15 test runs. And the design parameters of the dynamic vibration absorber are determined by using optimization program. The vehicle model with optimized dynamic vibration absorber reduces the vertical acceleration peak of the drive line by 17.1 % in compared with the initial model.

Structural Behavior of Mixed $LiMn_2O_4-LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ Cathode in Li-ion Cells during Electrochemical Cycling

  • The research and development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) are intensified due to the energy crisis and environmental concerns. In order to meet the challenging requirements of powering HEV, PHEV and EV, the current lithium battery technology needs to be significantly improved in terms of the cost, safety, power and energy density, as well as the calendar and cycle life. One new technology being developed is the utilization of composite cathode by mixing two different types of insertion compounds [e.g., spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $LiMO_2$ (M=Ni, Co, and Mn)]. Recently, some studies on mixing two different types of cathode materials to make a composite cathode have been reported, which were aimed at reducing cost and improving self-discharge. Numata et al. reported that when stored in a sealed can together with electrolyte at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, the concentrations of both HF and $Mn^{2+}$ were lower in the can containing $LiMn_2O_4$ blended with $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ than that containing $LiMn_2O_4$ only. That reports clearly showed that this blending technique can prevent the decline in capacity caused by cycling or storage at elevated temperatures. However, not much work has been reported on the charge-discharge characteristics and related structural phase transitions for these composite cathodes. In this presentation, we will report our in situ x-ray diffraction studies on this mixed composite cathode material during charge-discharge cycling. The mixed cathodes were incorporated into in situ XRD cells with a Li foil anode, a Celgard separator, and a 1M $LiPF_6$ electrolyte in a 1 : 1 EC : DMC solvent (LP 30 from EM Industries, Inc.). For in situ XRD cell, Mylar windows were used as has been described in detail elsewhere. All of these in situ XRD spectra were collected on beam line X18A at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using two different detectors. One is a conventional scintillation detector with data collection at 0.02 degree in two theta angle for each step. The other is a wide angle position sensitive detector (PSD). The wavelengths used were 1.1950 ${\AA}$ for the scintillation detector and 0.9999 A for the PSD. The newly installed PSD at beam line X18A of NSLS can collect XRD patterns as short as a few minutes covering $90^{\circ}$ of two theta angles simultaneously with good signal to noise ratio. It significantly reduced the data collection time for each scan, giving us a great advantage in studying the phase transition in real time. The two theta angles of all the XRD spectra presented in this paper have been recalculated and converted to corresponding angles for ${\lambda}=1.54\;{\AA}$, which is the wavelength of conventional x-ray tube source with Cu-$k{\alpha}$ radiation, for easy comparison with data in other literatures. The structural changes of the composite cathode made by mixing spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $Li-Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ in 1 : 1 wt% in both Li-half and Li-ion cells during charge/discharge are studied by in situ XRD. During the first charge up to ~5.2 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, the in situ XRD spectra for the composite cathode in the Li-half cell track the structural changes of each component. At the early stage of charge, the lithium extraction takes place in the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component only. When the cell voltage reaches at ~4.0 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, lithium extraction from the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component starts and becomes the major contributor for the cell capacity due to the higher rate capability of $LiMn_2O_4$. When the voltage passed 4.3 V, the major structural changes are from the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, while the $LiMn_2O_4$ component is almost unchanged. In the Li-ion cell using a MCMB anode and a composite cathode cycled between 2.5 V and 4.2 V, the structural changes are dominated by the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component, with much less changes in the layered $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, comparing with the Li-half cell results. These results give us valuable information about the structural changes relating to the contributions of each individual component to the cell capacity at certain charge/discharge state, which are helpful in designing and optimizing the composite cathode using spinel- and layered-type materials for Li-ion battery research. An Improved Bond Slip Model of CFT Columns for Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (CFT 기둥의 비선형 유한요소해석을 위한 개선된 강관-콘크리트 간 부착 모델 개발)

  • CFT column has a lot of structural advantages due to the composite behavior between in-filled concrete and steel tube. This paper deals with the development of an effective numerical model which can consider the bond-slip behavior between both components of concrete matrix and steel tube without taking double nodes. Since the applied axial load to in-filled concrete matrix is delivered to steel tube by the confinement effect and the friction, the governing equation related to the slip behavior can be constructed on the basis of the force equilibrium and the compatability conditions. In advance, the force and displacement relations between adjacent two nodes make it possible to express the slip behavior with the concrete nodes only. This model results in significant savings in the numerical modeling of CFT columns to take into account the effect of bond-slip. Finally, correlation studies between numerical results and experimental data are conducted to verifying the efficiency of the introduced numerical model.

Procuring the Fire Resistance Performance and Structure of Non-Refractory Coating CFT with Using the Corrugate-rib (Corrugate-rib를 활용한 무내화피복 CFT공법의 구조 및 내화성능 확보)

  • The Concrete-Filled Tube (CFT) system was developed for its excellent structural performance, such as its good stiffness, stress and ductility, which is derived from the mechanical advantages of its composite structure. However, it is known that the flat type of reinforcing plates need stiffeners placed at a certain distance from each other to avoid buckling failure, which increases the cost accordingly. This paper investigates the contribution of the rib elements placed inside the steel tube for the purpose of increasing the bond strength between the steel and concrete and fire performance with no additional protection. The test results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the corrugated rib's shape against fire. The results of this study showed that the buckling prevention and fire resistance performance criteria were satisfied by the application of the inner surface attachment rib, due to the resulting increase in the strength of the CFT column. Therefore, it is considered that the CFT method using the corrugated rib structure reinforcement developed through this study satisfies the structural and fire resistance performance criteria without the need for a refractory coating. Future studies will be needed to make the process efficient and economical for factory production.

Fire Resistance of Circular Internally Confined Hollow Reinforced Concrete Column (원형 내부 구속 중공 철근콘크리트 기둥의 내화 성능)

  • Reinforced-concrete (RC) columns are frequently designed and constructed. other types of columns includes composite types such as concrete-filled tube columns (CFT). Hollow RC columns may be effective in reducing both the self weight of columns and total amount of materials used. This is due to the fact that a hollow RC column possesses larger moment of inertia than that of solid RC columns of same cross sectional area. Despite the effectiveness the hollow RC column has not been popular because of its poor ductility performance. While the transverse reinforcements are effective in controlling the brittle failure of the outside concrete, they are not capable of resisting the failure of concrete of inner face which is in unconfined state of stress. To overcome these drawbacks, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete (ICH RC), a new column type, was proposed in the previous researches. In this study, the fire resistance performance of the ICH RC columns was analyzed through a series of extensive heat transfer analyses using the nonlinear-material model program. Also, effect of factors such as the hollowness ratio, thickness of the concrete, and thickness of the internal tube on the fire resistance performance were extensively studied. Then the factors that enhance the fire-resistant performance of ICH RC were presented and analyzed.

Tribological performance of UHMWPE reinforced with carbon nanotubes in bovine serum

  • Although the factors that cause the failure of orthopedic implants were not clearly determined, it was reported that the shapes of wear debris affect the tribological behavior of artificial implant. Many researches were conducted to examine the wear mechanism by debris but the role of debris shape in inflammatory reaction remains unclear. To observe the debris shape by addition of reinforcement, carbon nanotubes ( CNTs ) were added to ultra high molecular weight polyethylene ( UHMWPE ) to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNTs. CNTs which have a diameter of about 10-50 nm, while their length is about 3-5 nm were produced by the catalytic decomposition of the acetylene gas using a tube furnace. Plate on disc type wear test were performed to evaluate the tribological performance of UHMWPE composites reinforced with CNTs in lubricating condition ( bovine serum ). The wear losses of CNT added UHMWPE in bovine serum were significantly reduced. Worn surface and wear debris of UHMWPE with CNTs and without CNTs were compared to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNT on tribological behavior.

Surgical Treatment of the Pseudoaneurysm of the Ascending Aorta after Bentall Operation (Bentall씨 수술후 발생한 상행대동맥 가성동맥류 치험 1례)

  • A 31 year-old male patient underwent surgical treatment of the pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta complicating after the Bentall operation, He had undergone the replacement of the ascending aorta using the composite valved graft with direct coronary reimplantation under the diagnosis of the annuloaortic ectasia of ascending aorta associated with Marfan syndrome. Eleven months after the operation, he started to feel dyspnea and anterior chest pain, and was diagnosed as pseudoaneurysm around the ascending aortic graft. The second operation consisted of the dacron patch closure of the defect of the aortic graft which was the hole for previous coronary reimplantation, and the anastomosis between the coronary orifice and the aortic graft with the intermediate graft of a 10mm woven dacron tube, and suture closure of the fistula opening from the aneurysm. His postoperative course was uneventful and discharged without complication. He is doing well 10 months postoperatively.

Characterization and Photonic Effect of Novel Ag-CNT/TiO2 Composites and their Bactericidal Activities

  • A novel composite (Ag-CNT/$TiO_2$) of silver treated carbon nanotubes (Ag-CNT) and $TiO_2$ was synthesized via wet chemistry followed by a heat treatment. The dispersion and structure of the silver in the synthesized composites determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). XRD patterns of the composites showed that the composites contained a mixing anatase and rutile phase. The EDX spectra showed the presence of C, O, Ti and Ag peaks. The $TiO_2$ particles were distributed uniformly in the CNT network, and silver particles were virtually fixed on the surface of the tube. The photocatalysis degraded behaviors of the Ag-CNT/$TiO_2$ composites of the methylene blue, which increased with an increase of the silver component. The Ag-CNT/$TiO_2$ composites have excellent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (E. Coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. Aeru) and Bacillus subtilis (B. Sub) under visible light.
