  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate dentin bonding by two different dentin bonding systems(DBS) using acetone based primer or adhesive [All Bond 2(AB2), One Step(OS)] when they were applied by wet or dry bonding technique. Morphology of resin-dentin interface and hybrid layer thickness(HLT) were investigated using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope(CLSM) and compared to shear bond strength(SBS). 72 extracted sound human molars were randomly divided into 4 groups of 18 teeth each - Group 1.(AW); AB2 by wet bonding. Group 2(AD); AB2 by dry bonding. Group 3.(OW); OS by wet bonding, Group 4.(OD); OS by dry bonding. In 6 teeth of each group, notch-shaped class V cavities(depth 2mm) were prepared on buccal and lingual surface at the cementoenamel juction(12 cavities per group). To obtain color contrast in CLSM observation, bonding resins of each DBS were mixed with rhodamine B and primer of AB2 was mixed with sodium fluorescein. Prepared teeth of each group were treated with AB2, OS, respectively according to the manufacturer's instructions except for dentin surface moisture treatment after acid etching. In group 1 and 3, after acid etching, excess water was removed with wet tissue(Kimwipes), leaving consistently shiny, visibly hydrated dentin surface. In group 2 and 4, dentin surface was dried for 10 seconds at 1 inch distance. The treated teeth were then packed with composite resin(${\AE}$litefil) and light-cured. 12 microscopic samples($60{\sim}80{\mu}m$ thickness) of each group were obtained after longitudinal section and grinding(Exakt cutting and grinding system). Morphological investigation of resin-dentin interface and HLT measurement using CLSM were done. For measurement of SBS, remaining 12 teeth of each group were flattened occlusally to remove all enamel and grinded to 500 grit SiC(Pedemet Specimen Preparation Equipment). After applying DBS on the exposed dentin surface, composite resin was applied in the shape of cylinder, which has 5mm diameter, 1.5mm thickness, and light cured. SBS was measured using Instron with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. It was concluded as follows, 1. HLT of AW(mean: $2.59{\mu}m$) was thicker than any other group, and followed by AD, OW, OD in descending order(mean; 2.37, 2.28, $1.92{\mu}m$). Only OD had statistically significant differences(p<0.05) to AW and AD. 2. There were intimate contact of resin and dentin at the interface in wet bonding groups, but gaps or irregular interfaces were observed in dry bonding groups. 3. The length, diameter, density of resin tags were various even in the same group without significant differences between groups and lots of adhesive lateral branches were observed. 4. There were no statistically significant difference of SBS between AB2 and OS, but SBS of wet bonding groups were significantly higher(p<0.05) than dry bonding groups. 5. There were no consistent relationships between HLT and SBS.

  • The corrosion of reinforcement is the main reason for the performance degradation of concrete structures. The pre-rusted parts of rebar in concrete structures are vulnerable to the corrosion, especially if the structure is exposed to wet or chlorinated environments. In this study, effects of different curing solution on corrosion behavior of the pre-rusted rebars in the cement composites were investigated. HCl(3%) and CaCl2(10%) solution were utilized to accelerate the pre-rust of the rebar, and each pre-rust condition rebar including reference (RE) were placed in mortar cylinder. Three kinds of samples then were cured in CaCl2 (3%) solution and tap water respectively for 120 days. Electrochemical polarization and half-cell potential measurement were used to monitor the influence of curing water on the corrosion behavior of pre-rusted steel bar in cement composite. The surface morphology and composition of corroded steel bar were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction. The results show that the corrosion rates of pre-rusted samples in both curing water are higher than that of non-pre-rusted samples. The corrosion rates of RE, CaCl2 and HCl pre-rusted samples in salt water were 8.14, 4.48, 13.81 times higher than those in tap water respectively, on the 120th day.

  • The new technique has been used to determine the soil-reinforcement interaction. The testing apparatus is essentially a triaxial cell fitted with the capability to house a hollow cylinderical sample. A hollow cylinderical sand specimen with a concentrical layer of reinfarcing material sandwitched in the middle is used in this investigation. The reinforcement is fastened at the base. The hollow specimen can be viewed as a "unit sheet" of a soil-reinforcement composite system of infinite horizontal extent. Axial load as well as inner and outer chamber pressures can be applied to perform a test. The specimen is first subjected to an isotropic stress state corresponding to the overburden pressure. Next, an extension test by reducing the axial load is carried out. The specimen is "loaded" to failure by either the breakage of reinforcing material (tensile failure) or slippage which takes place at the soil-reinforcement interface (i.e. the overcoming of the bonding capacity). Since the reinforcement is fastened at its lower end to the base, any tendency of relative movement between the reinforcement and the sand during an extension test can induce tensile force in the reinforcement thus forming a "reversed pull-out" test condition. Preliminary test results have demonstrated positively of the new approach to test the soil-reinforcement interaction. Reinforcing elements of different extensibility were used to study the deformbility of reinforced soil. Furthermore, both the breakage and the pull-out modes of failure were observed.

  • Quorum quenching (QQ) bacteria entrapped in a polymeric composite hydrogel (QQ medium) have been successfully applied in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) for effective biofouling control. However, in order to bring QQ technology closer to practice, the physical strength and lifetime of QQ media should be improved. In this study, enforcement of physical strength, as well as an extension of the lifetime of a previously reported QQ bacteria entrapping hollow cylinder (QQ-HC), was sought by adding a dehydration procedure following the cross-linking of the polymeric hydrogel by inorganic compounds like $Ca^{2+}$ and boric acid. Such prepared medium demonstrated enhanced physical strength possibly through an increased degree of physical cross-linking. As a result, a longer lifetime of QQ-HCs was confirmed, which led to improved biofouling mitigation performance of QQ-HC in an MBR. Furthermore, QQ-HCs stored under dehydrated condition showed higher QQ activity when the storage time lasted more than 90 days owing to enhanced cell viability. In addition, the dormant QQ activity after the dehydration step could be easily restored through reactivation with real wastewater, and the reduced weight of the dehydrated media is expected to make handling and transportation of QQ media highly convenient and economical in practice.

  • Concrete-filled steel columns consist of circular, square or rectangular hollow sections filled concrete. Much research has studied for the behavior of concrete-filled steel structures. The advantages from structural point of view are the triaxial confinement of the concrete within the section, and the fire resistance of the column which largely depends on the residual capacity of the concrete core. The axial capacity of a concrete-filled rectangular or circular section is enhanced by the confining effect of the steel section on the concrete which depends in the magnitude on the shape of the section and the length of the column. Buckling tends to reduce the benefit of confinement on the squash load as the column slenderness increases. In circular sections it is possible to develop the cylinder strength of the concrete. When compare with reinforced concrete columns, the concrete-filled composite column possesses much better strength and ductility in shear and generally in flexure also. Many researches are being conducted about concrete filled steel column to get these advantages in building design. In this paper it is provided to the basic experimental study of compression behavior of the circular and rectangular tubular steel pipe filled with concrete.

  • Potentially significant mechanical improvements in tension can be achieved by the incorporation of randomly distributed, short discrete fibers in concrete. The improvements due to the incorporation fibers significantly influence the composite stress - strain ($\sigma$-$\varepsilon$) characteristics. In general incorporating fibers in a plain concrete has relatively small effect on its precracking behavior. It, however, alters its post-cracking behavior quite significantly, resulting in greatly improved ductility, crack controls, and energy absorption capacity (or toughness). Therefore, a thorough understanding the complete tensile stress - strain ($\sigma$-$\varepsilon$) response of fiber reinforced concrete is necessary for proper analysis while using structural components made with fiber reinforced concrete. Direct tensile stress applied to a specimen is in principle the simplest configuration for determining the tensile response of concrete. However, problems associated with testing brittle materials in tension include (i) the problem related to gripping of the specimen and (ii) the problem of ensuring centric loading. Routinely, indirect tension tests for plain concrete, flexural and split-cylinder tests, have been used as simpler alternatives to direct uniaxial tension test. They are assumed to suitable for fiber reinforced concrete since typically such composites comprise 98% by volume of plain concrete. Clearly since the post-cracking characteristics are significantly influenced by the reinforcing parameters and interface characteristics, it would be fundamentally incorrect to use indirect tensile tests for determining the tensile properties of fiber reinforced concrete. The present investigation represents a systematic look at the failure and toughening mechanisms and macroscopic stress - strain ($\sigma$-$\varepsilon$) characteristics of fiber reinforced concrete in the uniaxial tension test. Results from an experimental parametric study involving used fiber quantity, type, and mechanical properties in the uniaxial tension test are presented and discussed.

  • The Thermal Barrier Coating(TBC) has been used to improve the heat barrier and tribological properties of the aircraft engine and the automobile engine in high temperature. Especially, the high temperature tribological propertied of the cylinder haed and the piston crown of diesel engine was emphasized. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the microstructure, tribological propeer in high tempearmal shock resistance and bonding strength of five layer functionally gradient TBC for the applications. The five layerwere composed with 100% ceramic insulating later, 75(ceramic):25 (metal) layer, 50:50 layer, 25:75 layer and 100% metal bonding layer to redude the thermal stress. the YSL and MSL poweders were the insulation ceramics powers. The NiCrAly, Inconel625 and SUS powders were the bonding and mixingg powders for plasma spray process. According to the result of high temperature wear test, the wera resistance of YSZ/NiCrAlY siytem was most out standing at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$. At $400^{\circ}C$, the wear resistance of YSZ/Inconel system was better than others. Wear volume at other temperature because of the low temperature degration of zirconia. The thermal shock mechanism of 5 later is the vertical crack gegration in insulating layer. this means that the initial cracks were generated in the top layer, and then developed into the composite layers during thermal shock test. Finally, these cracks werereached to the interface of coating and substrate and also, these vertioal cracks join with the horizontal cracks of the each layers. The bonding strength of YSZ/NiCrAlY and YSZ/Inconel 5 layer system is better than other 5layer systems. The theramal shock resistance of thermal barrier coating s with 5 layer system is better than that of 3 layers and 2 layers.

  • A theory developed in Part I has been applied to calculate effective elastic and thermoelastic moduli of particle-strengthened, unidirectionally fiber-reinforced, and layered composites. For the unidirectional fiber composites the effect of fiber aspect ratio is taken into account. The analytical solutions obtained to the effective elastic moduli are compared with some of existing expressions and the following results are found. The effective bulk and shear moduli of the particle strengthened composites coincide with Korner's expressions, which correspond with the lower bounds of Hanshin and Shtrikman. The same expressions as the lower bounds of Hill and Hanshin are obtained for five independent moduli of the aligned continuous fiber composites, four of which coincide with Hanshin and Rosen's exact solutions for 'composite cylinder assemblage'.

  • Acoustic and vibration research activities for the structural development of Korean space launch vehicles are introduced in this paper. Various dynamic loads exerted on a launch vehicle during its operation are summarized. The acoustical design method of payload fairings which protect satellites from harsh launch environment was reviewed. Several acoustic research activities were performed to enhance the analytical prediction ability during the development period of the Naro and the Nuri launcher. Specifically, the following research activities are reviewed: a test and vibro-acoustic analysis of composite cylinders whose layup properties are varied, a research on low-frequency acoustic load reduction by an acoustic resonator array and an acoustic test on the cylinder part of the Naro payload fairing. A vibro-acoustic analysis result for the Nuri launcher was introduced and predicted acoustic and vibration levels and measured ones are shown to be in a good agreement.
