  • In this paper, we developed a optimal design system to optimize composite shell structures using genetic algorithm and expert system. The objective of the optimal design was to find designs that minimize weight of the structures and satisfy the design rules specified by the user. Buckling analyses of the composite shell structures were done to estimate buckling loads. Some example problems were selected and optimized with the developed system. And a GUI-based integrated design and optimization program, I-DOTCom was developed and introduced at the end of this paper.

  • Real defects in composite structures were detected by using laser measuring system. Four types of specimens, that is, a composite laminate, a honeycomb structure, a free-edge delamination and an adhesive joint, were used to study the applicability of ESPI and Shearography to composite structures. Thermal loading method, which can easily induce the surface deformation of specimen, was used to detect defects. Experimental results show that defects in composite structures can be easily detected by ESPI and Shearography. Moreover, it shows that ESPI and Shearography can be usefully applied to the detection of defects in various kinds of composite structures.

  • A study on the dynamic mechanical properties of the high strength carbon fiber epoxy composite beam was carried out. The macromechanical model was used for the theoretical analysis of the symmetric laminated composite beam. The anisotropic plate theory and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory were used to predict the effective flexural elastic modulus and the specific damping capacity of laminated composite beam. The free flexural vibration and torsional vibration tests were carried out to determine the specific damping capacities of the unidirectional laminated composite beam. The vibration tests were performed in a vacuum chamber with laser vibrometer system and electromagnetic hammer to obtain accurate experimental data. From the computational and experimental results, it was found that the theoretical values with the macromechanical analysis and the experimental data of symmetric laminated composite beam were in good agreement.

  • Using composite materials for lilting train system has many advantages such as manufacturing variety, specific high-strength & stiffness characteristics, and long-life durability, but the strongest advantage could be the possibility of lightweight product. In the leading countries, the composite materials are used for the material fer drivers' cabs, interior/exterior equipments for railway train, and it is now developing the composite materials applied for the train car body structure. In this paper, we examine the use of composite materials for the drivers' cabs and interior/exterior equipments for the developing tilting train in Korea, and review the car body design using composite materials.

  • iFLASH System is new structural floor system which consists of sandwich panels filled with nano-composite. The nano-composite has low specific gravity and high bonding strength with steel plates. The bonding strength is one of important factors for structural performance of iFLASH System and it can further be improved by surface preparation such as blast metal cleaning. However, using none blast steel plates is recommended since surface preparation generates additional fabrication time and cost. In this study, a bonding strength test and bending experiment were conducted to check feasibility of applying none blast steel plates to iFLASH System. Moreover, stress in bonding plane between steel plates and nano-composite was analytically evaluated by finite element method. Consequently, flexural capacity of the specimen was 11% higher than theoretically calibrated value and its flexural behavior was structurally efficient without defect of bonding.

  • The composite frame system suggested in this paper consists of steel reinforced concrete beam encased with structural tee and precast concrete column. This system has advantages such as reduction of materials, CO2 emissions and waste. To commercialize the new composite frame system, it is necessary to develop connections that can effectively connect each member. Therefore, a hybrid connection that has steel type connection and reinforced concrete together is utilized to connect easily at the composite frame system. To evaluate the structural performance of the composite frame system, an experimental investigation is presented. In this study, the flexural moment capacity of the composite frame was determined using the strain compatibility approach. The strain compatibility approach can be used to predict the flexural moment capacity at each limit state. As a result, all elements of the beam to column connection are represented to fully interact between each other. The specimens show errors of -1.9% in the yield limit state and 0.9% at the maximum load limit state. Also, testing shows that beam to column connections have characteristics of semi-rigid connection as per Eurocode 3.

  • Power system loads have a significant impact on a system. Although it is difficult to precisely describe loads in a mathematical model, accurately modeling them is important for a system analysis. The traditional load modeling method is based on the load components of a bus. Recently, the load modeling method based on measurements from a system has been introduced and developed by researchers. The two major components of a load modeling problem are determining the mathematical model for the target system and estimating the parameters of the determined model. We use the composite load model, which has both static and dynamic load characteristics. The ZIP model and the induction motor model are used for the static and dynamic load models, respectively. In this work, we propose the measurement-based parameter estimation method for the composite load model. The test system and related measurements are obtained using transient security assessment tool(TSAT) simulation program and PSS/E. The parameter estimation is then verified using these measurements. Cases are tested and verified using the sample system and its related measurements.

  • This paper reports on the development of a new composite slab system that uses a large- lipped steel channel and reinforced concrete. The advantages of this new system are that it serves as both a structural unit and an unsupported form and it has a secondary structural barrier function. A concrete pouring test was carried out for the large-lipped steel channel. Full-scale tests were carried out to assess the flexural strength-deformation characteristics and structural mechanics of the composite slab. The barrier mechanics of the steel channel concrete element (referred to as the SC subunit) of the composite slab are examined. The test results indicate that the new composite slab has excellent strength, ductility characteristics, and a structural barrier function in its SC subunit that is highly effective against severe loading.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear analysis technique with slip, the effects of slip modulus and composite action by shear connector on behavior and capacity in composite structure of sandwich system. As a results of this study, it proved that the slip modulus, in case of shear behavior, seldom influence load-resistance capacity such as yield and ultimate load, but in case of flexural behavior, it appropriately influence load-resistance capacity because of stress redistribution by slip. In case of flexural behavior, analysis result for perfect-composite results in over-estimation and perfect-slip results in under-estimation on behavior and capacity. Therefore, it is desirable to model steel-concrete interface with partial-composite. The effects of slip on behavior and capacity are less in case of positive composite than loosely composite, and it proved that composite action by shear connector improve the load-resistance capacity of this system.
