  • The present study aims to design a multiplayer microstrip antenna with composite sandwich construction and to estimate structural behavior of this multiplayer structure for the next generation of structural surface technology. This is termed Surface-Antenna-Structure indicating that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, antenna elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was $16\times16$ array antenna. From electrical measurements it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. Structural analysis showed this antenna structure was well designed for the mechanical rigidity. All constituent materials were characterized independently. The SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration for both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.

  • Spandex fibers have superior stretch and elastic recovery ability. Composite yarns containing spandex are frequently used to manufacture elastic textile products and accessories. We have developed a composite yarn spinning system that produces different kinds of composite yarns containing spandex on a modified open-end rotor spinning frame. By changing the twisting parameter of composite yarns, we studied the structure and properties of rotor-spun composite yarns with spandex. The results indicate that the twisting parameter has great influence on the structure and properties of rotor-spun composite yarns with spandex. The linear density of spandex filament has influence on the properties of composite yarns too. In comparison with normal rotor-spun yarn, the appearance of composite yarns is clearer, the structure is much tighter, and the properties are improved.

  • In this paper, feasibility of dynamic characteristics recovery of delaminated composite structure is numerically studied by using active control algorithm and piezoelectric actuator. Macro-fiber composite(MFC), which has great flexibility and high actuating force, is considered as an actuator in this work. After construction of finite element model for delaminated composite structure based on improved layerwise theory, modal characteristics are investigated and changes of natural frequencies and mode shapes, caused by delamination, are observed. Then, active control algorithm is realized and implemented to system model and control performances are numerically evaluated. Dynamic characteristics of delaminated composite structure are effectively recovered to those of healthy composite structure.

  • In this study, the cooling performance of a C/C composite material structure with metallic cooling tubes fixed by elastic force without chemical bonding was evaluated experimentally using combustion gas in a rocket combustor. The C/C composite chamber was covered by a stainless steel outer shell to maintain its airtightness. Gaseous hydrogen as a fuel and gaseous oxygen as an oxidizer were used for the heating test. The surface of these C/C composites was maintained below 1500 K when the combustion gas temperature was about 2900 K and heat flux to the combustion chamber wall was about 9 $MW/m^2$. No thermal damage was observed on the stainless steel tubes which were in contact with the C/C composite materials. Results of the heating test showed that such a metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure is able to control the surface temperature as a cooling structure(also as a heat exchanger), as well as indicating the possibility of reducing the amount of the coolant even if the thermal load to the engine is high. Thus, application of the metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure to reusable engines such as a rocket-ramjet combined cycle engine is expected.

  • A Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC) is the payload of KOMPSAT-2 which is designed for earth imaging in visible and near-Infrared region on a sun-synchronous orbit. The telescope in the MSC is a Ritchey-Chretien type with large aperture. The telescope structure should be well stabilized and the optical alignment should be kept steady so that best images can be achieved. However, the MSC is exposed to adverse thermal environment on the orbit which can give impacts on optical performance. Metering structure which is exposed to adverse space environment should have tight requirement of low thermal expansion and hygroscopic stability. In order to meet those stability requirements in addition to fundamental structural ones telescope structure was designed with newly developed graphite-cyanate composite which has high tensile modulus, high thermal conductivity and low moisture absorption compared with conventional graphite-epoxy composite. In this paper, space-borne telescope structure with new composite material will be presented and fulfillment of stability requirements will be verified with designed structure.

  • The composite lattice structure is a structure that supports the required load with the minimum weight and thickness. Composite lattice structure is manufactured by the filament winding process using impregnating high-strength carbon fiber with an epoxy resin. Filament winding process can laminate and manufacture only structurally necessary parts, composite lattice structure can be applied to aircraft fuselages, satellite and launch vehicles, and guided weapons to maximize weight reduction. In this paper, the development and evaluation of the composite lattice structure corresponding to the entire process from design, analysis, fabrication, and evaluation of large-scale cylindrical and conical composites lattice structure were performed. To be applicable to actual projectiles and guided weapons, we developed a cylindrical lattice structure with a diameter of 2,600 mm and a length of 2,000 mm, and a conical lattice structure with an upper diameter of 1,300 mm, a lower diameter of 2,500 mm, and a length of 900 mm. The performance of the developed composite lattice structure was evaluated through a load test.

  • This present study investigates Love-type wave propagation in composite structure consists of a loosely bonded functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) stratum lying over a functionally graded initially-stressed fibre-reinforced material (FGIFM) substrate. The closed-form expressions of the dispersion relation have been obtained analytically for both the cases of electrically open and electrically short conditions. Some special cases of the problem have also been studied and the obtained results are found in well-agreement with the classical Love wave equation. The emphatic influence of wave number, bonding parameter associated with bonding of stratum with substrate of the composite structure, piezoelectric coefficient as well as dielectric constant of the piezoelectric stratum, horizontal initial stresses, and functional gradedness of the composite structure on the phase velocity of Love-type wave has been reported and illustrated through numerical computation along with graphical demonstration in both the cases of electrically open and electrically short condition for the reinforced and reinforced-free composite structure. Comparative study has been carried out to analyze the distinct cases associated with functional gradedness of the composite structure and also various cases which reveals the influence of piezoelectricity, reinforcement and horizontal initial stress acting in the composite structure, and bonding of the stratum and substrate of the composite structure in context of the present problem which serves as one of the major highlights of the study.

In design phase, to maximize the advantage of composite material, manufacturing processes such as cocuring, cobonding and secondary bonding are introduced. For the curing of designed parts, composite tools are designed and manufactured. Assembly jigs are designed to satisfy dimensional tolerance of the structure. Inspection criteria are established and applied to the manufacturing. Technical data about inspection items and methods are summarized as manufacturing specifications for the mass production of the UAV structure.

  • Two-way shape memory effect(TWSME) under residual stresses are considered in the present study. The structure using two-way shape memory alloy(SMA) concept returns to its initial shape by increasing or decreasing temperature under the initially given residual stress. In the present study, we use a thermo-mechanical constitutive equation of SMA and laminated composite plates are considered as simple morphing structural components which are based on first order shear deformable laminated composite plate with large deflection. Numerical results of fully coupled SMA-composite structures are presented

  • The weight reduction of carbody structures is of great concern in developing high speed tilting train for the normal operation of tilting system. The use of composite materials for the carbody structures has many advantages due to their excellent material properties such as high specific strength and stiffness. In this paper, finite clement analysis was conducted to analysis and design the composite structure of Tilting Train eXpress(TTX). According to JIS E 7105, various load tests were performed using finite element analysis and the structural safety of the composite carbody structure was inspected to determine the thickness of the composite sandwich structure. In addition, structural analysis was conducted to suggest a design of the joint part of composite carbody and metal underframe.
