As the concept of the smart structure, monitoring of acoustic emission (AE) can be applied to inspect the fracture of the entire structure in operating condition using built-in sensors. The objective of this study is to find the characteristics of matrix crack signals in composites due to the different specimen shapes. To detect matrix crack signals, we performed tensile tests by changing the thickness, width and length of the specimen. For the quantitative evaluation, time frequency analysis such as short-time Fourier transform (STFT) was used to characterize the matrix crack signals from PZT sensor. The experimental result shows the distinctive signal features in frequency domain due to the different specimen shapes.

Shape memory alloy has been used to improve the tensile strength of composite by the occurrence of compressive residual stress in matrix using its shape memory effect. In order to fabricate shape memory alloy composite, TiNi alloy and A16061 were used as reinforcing material and mix, respectively. In this study, TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy composite was made by using hot press method. However, the specimen fabricated by this method had the bonding problem at the boundary between TiNi fiber and Al matrix when the load was applied to it. A cold rolling was imposed to the specimen to improve the bonding effect. It was found that tensile strength of specimen subjected to cold rolling was more increased than that of specimen which did not underwent cold rolling. In addition, acoustic emission technique was used to quantify the microscopic damage behavior of cold rolled TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy composite at high temperature.

This study aims to examine an effect of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristic of a composite laminated shell. For the purpose, we manufactured specimens with different stacking sequences and curvatures, and conducted a penetration test using an air-gun. To examine an influence according to stacking sequence, as flat plate and curvature specimen had more plies, their critical penetration energy was higher, Critical penetration energies of specimen A and C with less interfaces somewhat higher than those of B and D with more interfaces. The reason that with less interfaces, critical penetration energy was higher is pre-impact bending stiffness of composite laminated shell with less interfaces was lower than that of laminated shell with more interfaces, but bending stiffness after impact was higher. And it is because interface, the weakest part of the composite laminated shell, was influenced by transverse impact. As curvature increases, critical penetration energy increases linearly. It is because as curvature increases, resistance to in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. Patterns of cracks caused by penetration of composite laminated shells include interlaminar crack, intralaminar crack, and laminar fracture. A 0$^{\circ}$ply laminar had a matrix crack, a 90$^{\circ}$ply laminar had intralaminar crack and laminar fracture, and interface between 0$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$laminar had a interlaminar crack. We examined crack length and delamination area through a penetration test. For the specimen A and C with 2 interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B and D with 4 interface, the longest crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the third interface from the impact point.
PURPOSE. Shear bond strength (SBS) test is the most commonly used method for evaluating resin bond strength of zirconia, but SBS results vary among different studies even when evaluating the same bonding strategy. The purpose of this study was to promote standardization of the SBS test in evaluating zirconia ceramic bonding and to investigate factors that may affect the SBS value of a zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimen. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimens were used to simulate loading with a shear force by the three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) modeling, in which stress distribution under uniform/non-uniform load, and different resin cement thickness and different elastic modulus of resin composite were analyzed. In vitro SBS test was also performed to validate the results of 3D FE analysis. RESULTS. The loading flat width was an important affecting factor. 3D FE analysis also showed that differences in resin cement layer thickness and resin composite would lead to the variations of stress accumulation area. The SBS test result showed that the load for preparing a SBS specimen is negatively correlated with the resin cement thickness and positively correlated with SBS values. CONCLUSION. When preparing a SBS specimen for evaluating bond performance, the load flat width, the load applied during cementation, and the different composite resins used affect the SBS results and therefore should be standardized.

After polymerizing composite resin with argon laser and visible light, four test, to be concretely, measurement of compressive strength using Instron testing machine, surface microhardness using Rockwell hardness tester, quantitative analysis of residual monomer using HPLC and analysis of degree of conversion using FTIR, were accomplished. Test groups were a sort of specimen with 3mm diameter, 4mm thickness for measuring compressive strength, two sort of specimen with 7mm diameter, 2mm and 3mm thickness for measuring surface microhardness, quantitative analysing of residual monomer after curing and measuring the degree of conversion, each were divided by six groups according to the condition of light exposure. In case of argon laser, in 1.0W and 0.5W output, the exposure time for specimen were 5 sec, 10 sec respectiyely. In case of visible light, the exposure time for specimen were 20 sec, 40 sec respectively. The test were accomplished and following results were obtained. 1. Compressive strength of composite resin was the highest in the group of 1 W output, exposing for 10 sec with argon laser, followed by the group of 0.5W, exposing for 10 sec with argon laser, the group of exposing for 40 sec with visible light. But there were statistically no significant difference between these three groups(p>0.05). 2. Surface microhardness of composite resin wasn't significantly affected by light curing conditions. 3. BIS-GMA within residual monomer was least detected in the group of exposing for 40 sec. TEGDMA was least detected in the group of 1 W output, exposing for 10 sec with argon laseboth 2mm and 3mm thickness specimen. 4. The degree of conversion of all groups in the 2mm thickness specimen were more than 50%, similar to each other but in the group of 1W, exposing 10 sec with argon laser the degree of conversion was highest in the 3mm thickness specimen. 5. Argon laser could make composite resin to has similar properties with 25% lesser exposure time than visible light.
Effect of SiC particle size of the densification of Al2O3-SiC composite during pressureless sintering was investigated. Two types of SiC powders having average particle size of 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used. Densification rate of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was slower than that of the specimen containg 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles. Although the relative density of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was below 90% of theoretical density after sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ the complete closure of open pores occurred. Therefore full densification could be obtained by subsequent HIP. On the other hand in the specimen containing 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles the complete closed pore was observed at 95% of theoretical density. Such a fast pore closure in the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles is likely to occur as a result of dense reaction layer formation on the specimen surface which is attributed to the high reactivity of small size particles with sintering atmosphere.

Test specimen test was performed using concrete reinforced with fiber sheet and the test variables were based on the kinds of fiber and the number of reinforcement layers. Using steel-concrete reinforced with fiber sheet, compression tests were performed and the test variables were the kinds of fiber, number reinforcement layers and reinforcement layer order. The following results were obtained: 1) It was demonstrated that compressive strength of the test specimen reinforced during test specimen test and member test increased as the number of reinforcement layers increased. 2) It was shown that non-reinforced test, specimen were destroyed during the member tests, but the specimen reinforced with CFS destroyed and the GFS-reinforced specimen and composite reinforced specimen showed ductile destruction. 3) As a result of tests on kinds of reinforcement fiber, it was demonstrated that CFS-reinforced test specimen had higher compressive strength in a 공시체 test. In the member test, 2ply-and 3ply-GFS reinforced specimens except lplied one had higher compressive strength. It was because partial destruction occurred due to the rate of height/section. 4) For layer strength order, compared with test specimen reinforced only with a single reinforced material, test specimen reinforced with CFS and GFS, and test specimen reinforced with CFS first showed better results in compressive strength and ductility judgement.

[ $Al_2O_3/SiC$ ]composite ceramics were sintered to evaluate the bending strength and elastic wave characteristics. The three-point bending test was carried out under room temperature. The elastic wave was detected by fracture wave detector. The crack healing behavior was investigated from 1373 K to 1723 K. The bending strength of $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite by nanocomposite is higher than that of $Al_2O_3$ monolithic. Crack-healing behavior depended on an amount of additive powder $Y_2O_3$. In $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite ceramics with 3 wt. % $Y_2O_3$ for additive powder, the bending strength at 1573 K is about 100% increase than that of the smooth specimens. From the result of wavelet analysis of elastic wave signal, the smooth specimen and heat treated specimen of $Al_2O_3$ monolithic and $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite ceramics showed characteristics of frequency about 58 kHz. The strength of $Al_2O_3/SiC$ composite ceramics was a little higher than those of $Al_2O_3$ monolithic. The dominant frequencies were high with increasing of $Y_2O_3$ for additive powder. The dominant frequencies had direct connection with the bending strength.

In this study, a U-shape composite beam was developed to be effectively used for a steel parking lot which is 8m or lower in height. When the U-shape composite beam was applied to a steel parking lot, essential considerations were story-height and long-span. In addition, due to the mixed structural system with reinforced concrete and steel material, the U-shape composite beam needed to have a structural integrity and reliable performance over demand capacity. The main objective of this study was to investigate the performance of the structure consisting of the reinforced concrete (RC) slab and U-shape beam. A U-shape composite beam generally used at a parking lot served as a control specimen. Four specimens were tested under four-point bending. To calculate theoretical values, strain gauges were attached to rebar, steel plate, and concrete surface in the middle of the specimens. As the results, initial yielding strength of the control specimen occurred at the bottom of the U-shaped steel. After yielding, the specimen reached the maximum strength and the RC slab concrete was finally failed by concrete crush due to compressive stress. The structural performance such as flexural strength and ductility of the specimen with the increased beam depth was significantly improved in comparison with the control specimen. Furthermore, the design of the U-shape composite beam with the consideration of flexural strength and ductility was effective since the structural performance by a negative loading was relatively decreased but the ductile behavior was evidently improved.

Over two decades, many researchers have performed studies on strength size effects in composite laminates under tensile and flexural loads. It is well known that there is a tendency for the strength of fibre-reinforced composites to decrease with increasing specimen size. Under compressive load, however, little work has been done on the effect of specimen size to failure strength. This is due to the fact that compressive testing of composite is very difficult. In this paper, the effect of the test specimen size on the compressive strength of composites containing open hole was considered using T300/924C, $>[45/-45/0/90]_{3S}$. For sizing test specimens, the in-plane scaling method is used i.e., the change of two- dimensional specimen area in specimen width and gauge length. The results clearly show that there is a hole size effect in the finite width plates. In addition, the specimens which have the same a/W(hole diameter/specimen width) exhibit a tendency of size effect. In contrast, test results of the unnotched specimens did not show a clear strength size effect.
