  • This paper presents a dual-band balanced mixer using nonlinear phase characteristic of composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line. This metamaterial structure provides low LO leakage and high RF to LO isolation without additional filters for LO and RF path. The balanced mixer consists of balun and Wilkinson divider with dual-band characteristic of unit-cell which behaves like a CRLH metamaterial. Experimental results are used to verify the proposed metamaterial functions. The balanced mixer design results in an operating frequency of 870 MHz and 1660 MHz with an optimum mixer conversion loss of 15.2 dB at 870 MHz and 21.2 dB at 1660 MHz.

The proposed CRLH transmission line in this paper have composite characteristics of low pass filter and high pass filter, also it has good advantages of low insertion loss and ultra wide passband characteristics. The structure with different cell number are studied, and the UWB filter using 3-cell CRLH transmission line is fabricated and measured, which shows a good agreement between simulated and measured results. It has center frequency of 5 GHz, fractional bandwidth of 105 %, and insertion loss of 0.7 dB at center frequency.

  • A novel design method of ultra wideband bandpass filter using CRLH transmission line with Dumbell type DGS is presented in this paper. Defected Ground Structure and microstrip interdigital capacitor are used to design the ultra wideband (UWB) filter. CRLH transmission line has composite characteristics of low pass and high pass filter. As control of cutoff frequency of low pass and high pass response on CRLH transmission line, we can get characteristic of UWB filter. We designed and simulated for CRLH transmission lines with one, two, four, and eight cells. A UWB filter using four cells CRLH is designed and fabricated to verify the results. The characteristics of designed filter have center frequency of 5GHz and relative bandwidth of 88%.

  • This paper presents a tunable composite right/left-handed (CRLH) delay line for a delay line discriminator that linearizes modulated frequency sweep in a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar transmitter. The tunable delay line consists of 8 cascaded unit cells with series varactor diodes and shunt inductors. The reverse bias voltage of the varactor diode controlled the group delay through its junction capacitance. The measured results demonstrate a group delay of 8.12 ns and an insertion loss of 4.5 dB at 250 MHz, while a control voltage can be used to adjust the group delay by approximately 15 ns. A group delay per unit cell of approximately 1 ns was obtained, which is very large when compared with previously published results. This group delay can be used effectively in FMCW radar transmitters.

  • In this letter, a compact and fully printed composite right- and left-handed (CRLH) dual-band power divider is proposed. The branches of the conventional Wilkinson power divider are replaced by subwavelength CRLH phase-shift lines having $+90^{\circ}$ for one frequency and $-90^{\circ}$ for another frequency for dual-band and miniaturization performance. Equations are derived for the even- and odd-mode analysis combined with the dual-band CRLH circuit. A PCS and a WLAN band are chosen as the test case and the circuit approach agrees with the CAD simulation and the measurement. Additionally, the CRLH property is shown with the dispersion diagram and the eightfold size reduction is noted.

  • In this paper, a frequency tunable zeroth-order resonant(ZOR) antenna has been implemented. The ZOR characteristics of the proposed antenna is realized by using a composite right-and left-handed(CRLH) transmission line which consists of a rectangular slot on the ground plane of a mushroom structured antenna in order to minimize the antenna size. In addition, the tunable devices are introduced on the slotted ground plane for frequency tuning capability. Depending on the on and off states of the tunable device on the slotted ground plane, a shunt inductance value of the CRLH transmission line is changed and its resonant frequency becomes tunable. From the experimental results, the resonant frequency of the proposed antenna is changed from 4.92 GHz to 2.96 GHz. Additionally, the proposed antenna's size is reduced by 94.24 % compared with the half-wavelength patch antenna.

  • This paper proposes a dual-band balun which is based on Wilkinson power divider. By inserting $\lambda/2$ transmission line between port 2 and 3, this balun shows good matching at all ports and improved isolation. We use matamaterial(CRLH, D-CRLH) structure for a miniaturization of the circuit implementation and dual-band operation at TDMB frequency range(195MHz) and DVB-H frequency range(670MHz). The proposed balun is designed with return loss larger than -12.98dB at all port, and isolation larger than -12.4dB, the amplitude imbalance between output signals less than 0.08dB, also phase differences of outputs less than $2.8^{\circ}$.

  • The conventionally classified waves are reclassified in this paper, including the waves associated with metamaterial (MTM) transmission lines. Various types of guided waves in periodic structures are analyzed for 1D Composite Right/Left Handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TL). In addition, dispersion diagrams for 1D CRLH, RH, and LH TLs are presented in terms of radiation conditions. We have refined the design equations of the conventional 1D CRLH TL and proposed a condition to realize the desired phase shift and its slope per unit cell. This condition has been applied to the conventional Wilkinson power divider and realized into MTM added $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler. Based on the 10 dB return loss and the $90{\pm}10^{\circ}$ phase shift, the bandwidths of the MTM added $90^{\circ}$ hybrid coupler are 82.25% and 103.5% against the conventional 23% and 52.5%, respectively.

  • This paper presents a tunable bandpass filter based on the varactor-loaded composite right- and left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL). The proposed filter is composed of one CRLH-TL unit cell, which corresponds to the third-order bandpass filter. The tunable bandpass filter is designed using only lumped-elements. The use of lumped elements saves space and lowers the fabrication cost. The size of the proposed tunable bandpass filter is $17mm{\times}5mm$, neglecting the feed lines and DC lines. All of the varactors are controlled by one DC bias. The center frequency of the bandpass filter can be controlled by varying the value of the varactors. The tunable range of the center frequency is from 412.5 to 670 MHz. The insertion loss is less than 3 dB, the return loss is more than 10 dB in the passband.

  • The design of a new compact UWB bandpass filter is proposed, which has cascaded center-tapped microstrip composite right/left-handed transmission-line zeroth-order resonators (CRLH-TL ZORs). In an attempt to reduce the size, instead of the conventional half-wavelength resonators or periodic and multiple CRLH-TL cells, only one cell ZOR geometry is adopted as each resonator in the filter. Additionally, two center-tapped ZORs are coupled to increase the slope of the skirt. Besides, stepped impedance matching parts are placed in the paths to the input and output ports to enhance passband and stopband performances. The proposed filter is shown to have the overall size of $0.69{\lambda}_g{\times}0.70{\lambda}_g$, the insertion loss much less than 1 dB, and an acceptable return loss performance in the predicted and measured results.
