  • Buckling behavior of stiffened laminated composite cylindrical panel was studied using linear and nonlinear deformation theory. Various buckling load factors are obtained for stiffened laminated composite cylindrical panels with rectangular type longitudinal stiffeners and various longitudinal length to radius ratio, which made from Carbon/Epoxy USN150 prepreg and are simply-supported on four edges under uniaxial compression. Buckling behavior design analyses are carried out by the nonlinear search optimizer, ADS.

  • The postbuckling compressive strengths of $[0/90/\pm\theta]_s$ composite laminated cylindrical panels with various fiber angles and width-to-length ratios are characterized by the nonlinear finite element method. For the iteration and load-increment along the postbuckling equilibrium path a modified arc-length method in which the effect of failure can be considered is introduced. In the progressive failure analysis the maximum stress criterion and complete unloading model are used. Present finite element results show good agreement with experiments for $[0_3/90]_s$ cylindrical panel and $[0/\pm45/90/]_s$ plate. The postbuckling compressive strength of $[0/90/\pm\theta]_s$ composite laminated cylindrical panel is independent of the initial buckling stress but high in the panel with large value of the bending stiffness in axial direction. In the several cylindrical panels, it is observed that the prebuckling compressive failures occur and result into the collapse before the buckling.

  • The present work deals with second order statistics of post buckling response of piezoelectric laminated composite cylindrical shell panel subjected to hygro-thermo-electro-mechanical loading with random system properties. System parameters such as the material properties, thermal expansion coefficients and lamina plate thickness are assumed to be independent of the temperature and electric field and modeled as random variables. The piezoelectric material is used in the forms of layers surface bonded on the layers of laminated composite shell panel. The mathematical formulation is based on higher order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with von-Karman nonlinear kinematics. A efficient $C^0$ nonlinear finite element method based on direct iterative procedure in conjunction with a first order perturbation approach (FOPT) is developed for the implementation of the proposed problems in random environment and is employed to evaluate the second order statistics (mean and variance) of the post buckling load of piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shell panel. Typical numerical results are presented to examine the effect of various environmental conditions, amplitude ratios, electrical voltages, panel side to thickness ratios, aspect ratios, boundary conditions, curvature to side ratios, lamination schemes and types of loadings with random system properties. It is observed that the piezoelectric effect has a significant influence on the stochastic post buckling response of composite shell panel under various loading conditions and some new results are presented to demonstrate the applications of present work. The results obtained using the present solution approach is validated with those results available in the literature and also with independent Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS).

  • This paper presents stacking sequence optimization of laminated angle-ply cylindrical panel based on natural frequency. Finite element method (FEM) is used to obtain the vibration characteristic of an anisotropic panel using the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) and genetic algorithm (GA) is used to obtain the optimal stacking sequence of the layers. Cylindrical panel has finite length and arbitrary boundary conditions. The thicknesses of the layers are assumed constant and their angles are specified as design variables. The effect of the number of plies and boundary conditions in the fitness function is considered. Numerical examples are presented for four, six and eight layered anisotropic cylindrical panels.

  • The optimal design for stiffened laminate composite cylindrical shells under combined loads is studied by a nonlinear mathematical search algorithm. The optimal design is accomplished with the CONMIN. several types of buckling modes with maximum allowable stresses and strains are included as constraints in the optimal design process, such as general buckling, panel buckling with either stringers or rings smeared out, local skin buckling, local crippling of stiffener segments. Rectangular or T type stringers and rectangular rings are used for stiffened laminate composite cylindrical shells.

  • The principal goal of the present study is to examine the aeroelastic analysis of cylindrical laminated shells with curvilinear fibers. To attain this objective, the equations of motion are firstly extracted according to the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The linear piston theory is then implemented to estimate aerodynamic loads for various airflow angles over the cylindrical shell area, providing the aeroelastic equations. The well-known isogeometric analysis based on the NURBS basis functions is subsequently developed to discretize the aeroelastic equations of the considered problem. Finally, by writing the resultant equations in the standard form of an eigenvalue problem, the panel flutter analysis of a cylindrical variable stiffness composite laminated (VSCL) shell will be carried out. The comparison and validation of achieved results with the results of references mentioned in the literature are made to demonstrate the accurateness of the present formulation. Also, the influence of various parameters, including the airflow angle, fiber path orientation, radius of curvature, and converting symmetric lay-up to unsymmetrical lay-up on the flutter threshold is studied.

  • Cylindrical panels are widely used as aircraft fuselages and rocket etc, and the cutouts for weight reduction or wiring at such structures tend to cause the stress concentration and the local radial displacement so that seriously effect the stability of structures. In this paper, for the cylindrical composite panel with coutout at the center, the buckling and postbuckling behaviour regarding the shape and size of cutout is analyzed by finite element method. Also the lamination mechanism , changing bending stiffness and fiber orientation angle variation are researched to be regarded in studying the laminated composite materials.
