  • This paper introduces a relative comparative advantage index and a composite concentration index of university research activity in science and technology. Three hypotheses were tested regarding differences of degree of concentration based on the size of government R&D fund, location of university, and source of foundation, respectively. T-test results imply that there are significant differences of concentration based on the size of R&D fund and source of foundation, while location of university does not show a significant difference. The paper generally suggests that the lesser size of government R&D fund would lead higher level of concentration, and public funded universities tend to maintain far higher concentration ratio. The paper contributes by introducing relevant indexes for analyzing university research competence, concentration and competitiveness, and hence by proposing policy direction and implication for university competitiveness policy.

  • We investigated effects of a compatibilizer on the rheological properties during mixing and thermal properties of polypropylene (PP)-natural fiber composites. Two types of natural fibers (cotton fiber and wood fiber) were compared. maleic anhydride grafted PP was used for a compatibilizer. On increasing the amounts of the compatibilizer, the torque values of composites were increased, regardless of the kind of fibers. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed a slight increase in the degree of crystallinity with adding the compaibilizing agent, while the effects of the kind of fibers were marginal. It may be considered, however, the cotton fiber exhibits better interaction with PP-g-MAH than the natural fiber based on the rheographs, DSC, and XRD results.

  • In this work, pitch-carbonized glass fibers were prepared for reinforcement of composites. The influence of acid functionalization of the fibers on the morphological, mechanical, and thermal properties of fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites was investigated. The acid functionalization of the fibers led to 10 and 150% increases in the mechanical and thermal properties, respectively, as compared to carbon fiber-reinforced composites. This can be attributed to the superior orientation of fiber structures and good interfacial interactions between fillers and epoxy matrix, resulting in enhanced degree of dispersion and formation of thermally conductive paths in the functionalized composites.

  • In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests were performed to evaluate the effects of clays mixed into compaction piles due to confining stress of ground on consolidation promoting. For the tests, various compaction piles such as SCP, GCP, and RAPP (Recycled-Aggregate Porous concrete Pile) were used. The ground condition was simulated at 50% and 100% of degree of consolidation. Also, confining stresses were applied to the composite ground corresponding to those of 5m depth. The amount of mixed clays into each compaction pile were estimated by measuring the drainage from the saturated compaction piles. From the test result, it was shown that the drainage area of compaction pile was changing according to the consolidation condition. GCP showed the most change of drainage area as it has relatively large void ratio; however, the amount of change was decreased by progressing consolidation of ground.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the toothbrush abrasion characteristics of class V restorations. Thirty extracted human premolars, which were collected from oral surgery clinics were used. We mounted five teeth in a metal ring mold of 50 mm in diameter and 15 mm in height using chemically cured acrylic resin. Class V cavities were prepared in lingual cervical root surfaces and restored using one of following restorative materials : Dentin Conditioner/Fuji II LC (Group FL), All Bond II/Z-250 (Group ZT), One-up Bond F/Palfigue Estelite (Group PE), F2000 Primer/Adhesive (Group FT), and Prime & Bond 2.1/Dyract AP (Group DR). They were stored under distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for seven days. The toothbrush abrasion test was conducted using a wear testing machine of pin-on disk type under a load of 1.5 N for 100,000 cycles. We have examined the bonded interfaces, the changes of surface roughness and color of abraded surfaces. From this experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. The change of surface roughness showed high degree: RMGIC>compomer>composite resin (p<0.05). 2. Because of the protrusion and missing of filler particles, SEM observation of abraded surfaces of RMGIC and compomers revealed the increase of surface roughness due to the selective removal of matrix resin. 3. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was affected in large part by the change of $L^*$ and $b^*$ of resin composites (p<0.05). 4. The color change by toothbrush abrasion was so small to detect by human eyes. 5. SEM observation of abraded surfaces revealed the interface bonding was the best in the FT group.

  • In this study an optimization of greenhouse roof shape was performed to maximize solar light transmission which is one of the most important elements in greenhouse environment. To determine roof shape that maximize the total light transmissivity, a computer model for analysing light transmissivity was composed and the Genetic Algorithms was applied for solving optimization problems. By setting composite model as objective function(fitness function), the optimum combination of design variables(roof inclination angle, width ratio) was searched using Genetic Algorithms. The optimum combination of input variables for the maximum light transmissivity at Suwon in winter was found 40 degree root angle , 0.5 width ratio, for two span greenhouses and 37 $_。 / roof angle, 0.7 width ratio, for single span greenhouses.es.

  • In this work, the effect of anodic oxidation on surface characteristics of high strength PAN-based carbon fibers was investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid-base values, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angles. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). As a result, the acidity or the $O_{ls}/C_{ls}$ ratio of carbon fiber surfaces was increased, due to the development of the oxygen functional groups. Consequently, the anodic oxidation led to an increase in surface free energy of the carbon fibers, mainly due to the increase of its specific (or polar) component. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $K_{IC}$, had been improved in the anodic oxidation on fibers. These results were explained that good wetting played an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fibers and epoxy resin matrix.

  • Long-fiber-reinforced composites have the advantages of cost-competitiveness and high degree of freedom of molding compared to continuous-fiber-reinforced composites. On the other hand, it is difficult to ensure uniform characteristics due to the randomly distributed fiber orientation incurred from the process of manufacturing intermediate materials. In this study, the effect of the directionality of LFPS (Long Fiber Prepreg Sheet) materials on the mechanical properties was analyzed. The eddy current measurement method was used to analyze fiber orientations, and tensile and compression tests on LFPS materials were performed according to ASTM standards. In addition, the test results and theoretical values of LFPS materials were verified using the ROM (rule-of-mixtures) theory. These results confirmed the effect of fiber orientation on mechanical properties of discontinuous-fiber-reinforced composites.

  • Since the organophilic bentonite disperses well in polymer matrix, a composite material of polymer and bentonite was studied for its mechanical properties. To increase the degree of dispersion and the bond in forces to the polymer matrix, bentonite, encapsulated by imidazoline, was used as a filler. Polyethylene powder of particle size of 100 mesh was used, and organophilic bentonite, so-called bentone, whose particle size was 250 mesh was also used in this experiment. V-type mixer was used for mixing and Banbury mixer was used for melt-blending. The sample specimen were made by heating the mixture in the plate press, and the specimen were formed as a sheet, exactly the same as the mold on the plate. Tensile strength, bending strength and compressive strength were studied specially. Tensile strength, elongation rate, bending strength and bending rate at constant pressure were decreased as the filler content increased. Compressive strength was increased as the filler content increased.

  • Transportation culture is an inseparable part of a group's overall culture. Since the term "transportation" is directly related to vehicular movement, I would like to propose the more general term: transportation culture and use that in the following paragraphs. Transportation culture is on one hand expressed by the consumers of transportation services reflecting their overall social culture and on the other hand taken into account by transportation professionals. Ministry of Land and Transportation conducted the Transportation Culture Index, a nationally representative survey, to assess a few key indicators of the degree to which ttransportation culture is valued and is being pursued every year. In this study, recommendation for TCI are explained based on theoretical framework and changing environment.
