  • In the majority of previous studies on deformation of seabed structures using DEM, elements of structures have been assumed that it is composed with uniform materials or received fixed wave force, despite that actual submerged structures are composed with various size materials and influenced by complicated fluid field. The goal of this study is to develop a new model for analysis of seabed structure deformation using discontinuous structures composed with various size materials. As the first phase, a model using DEM and VOF, which can compute the deformation of submerged structures composed with various size materials, such as rubble mound structures, is proposed. A model test is carried out and then the validity of the model is discussed.

  • Thermal deformation behavior has been investigated for unsymmetric laminates composed of various kinds of material layers, such as stainless steel, aluminum, carbon/epoxy or glass/epoxy. The thermal deformations of unsymmetric laminates were predicted using the classical lamination theory and compared with those obtained from experimental measurement. In the case of unsymmetric laminate composed of stainless steel and aluminum layer, the experimental results were agreed well with the values predicted. But in the case of unsymmetric laminate composed of fiber composite layers, there was a considerable difference of thermal deformation between the prediction and experimental measurement, which may be from the change of material properties of fiber composite layers for temperature variation.

  • Dissimilar joining of Al 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side were composed of the heat affected zone and the plastically deformed zone, while those in the Al alloy side were composed of the recrystallized zone including stainless steel particles, the thermo-mechanically affected zone and the heat affected zone. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained Al alloy with lamella structure and intermetallic compound layer. Thickness of the intermetallic layer was approximately 300nm and was identified as the A14Fe with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties, such as tensile and fatigue strengths were lower than those of 6013 Al alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to Al alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.

  • A micro thermoelectric device was processed by electroplating the n-type Bi-Te nanowires and ptype Sb-Te nanowires into an alumina template with 200 nm pores. Power generation characteristics of the micro devices composed of the Bi-Te nanowires, the Sb-Te nanowires, and both the Bi-Te and the Sb-Te nanowires were analyzed with applying a temperature difference of $40^{\circ}C$ across the devices along the thickness direction. The n-type Bi-Te and the p-type Sb-Te nanowire devices exhibited thermoelectric power outputs of $3.8{\times}10^{-10}W$ and $4.8{\times}10^{-10}W$, respectively. The output power of the device composed of both the Bi-Te and the Sb-Te nanowires decreased to $1.4{\times}10^{-10}W$ due to a large electrical resistance of the Cu electrode connecting the Bi-Te nanowire array with the Sb-Te nanowire array.

  • In this study, a molybdenum alloy with dispersed high-entropy particles was fabricated using the powder metallurgy method. The high-entropy powder, composed of Nb, Ta, V, W, and Zr elements with a same atomic fraction, was prepared via high-energy ball milling. Using this powder, an ideal core-shell powder, composed of high-entropy powder as core and Mo powder as shell, was synthesized via the milling and reduction processes. These processes enabled the realization of an ideal microstructure with the high-entropy phase uniformly dispersed in the Mo matrix. The sintered body was successfully fabricated via uniaxial compaction followed by pressureless sintering. The sintered body was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, and the high-entropy phase is uniformly dispersed in the Mo matrix.

  • For sound absorption and sound insulation in automobile industry, the sound absorption materials based on meltblown nonwovens were prepared by SMS (spunbond-meltblown-spunbond) technique. And the sound absorption coefficient (${\alpha}$) of the meltblown nonwoven, produced with isotatic-polypropylene(PP), was examined for the various processing conditions such as die-to-collector distance(DCD), nonwoven weight(GSM), and air suction conditions. The meltblown nonwoven for sound absorption materials was composed of bulky microfiber web, increasing with increases in weight and DCD. The sound absorption coefficient(${\alpha}$) was excellent as a sound absorption materials of PAD type composed of SMS(spunbond-meltblownspunbond) nonwovens.

  • Interfacial stresses at two-material interfaces and initial displacement field over the entire domain are obtained by modifying the potential energy functional with a penalty function, which enforces continuity of the stresses at the interface of two materials. Based on the initial displacement field and interfacial stresses, a new methodology to generate a continuous stress field over the entire domain has been proposed by combining the modified projection method of stress-smoothing and Loubignac's iterative method of improving the displacement field. Stress analysis is carried out on two examples made of dissimilar materials : one is a two-material cantilever composed of highly dissimilar materials and the other is a zirconium-lined cladding tube made of slightly dissimilar materials. Results of the analysis show that the proposed method provides an improved continuous stress field over the entire domain, and accurately predicts the nodal stresses at the interface, while the conventional displacement-based finite element method produces significant stress discontinuities at the interface. In addition, the total strain energy evaluated from the improved continuous stress field converges to the exact value in a few iterations.

  • Diesel exhaust particles are mostly sub-micrometer agglomerates composed of carbonaceous primary particles ranging from 10 to 80nm, but contain also adsorbed or condensed hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon derivatives, sulfur compounds, and other materials. If particles are primarily composed of volatile materials, they have different health impacts from solid particles. Thus, the analysis of the volatility of diesel particles is one of an important diesel research area. (omitted)

  • Natural photosynthesis utilizes two proteins, photosystem I and photosystem II, to efficiently oxidize water and reduce NADP+ to NADPH. Artificial photosynthesis which mimics this process achieve water splitting through a two-step Z-schematic water splitting process using man-made synthetic materials for hydrogen fuel production. In this study, Z-scheme system was achieved from the hybrid materials which composed of hydrogen production part as photosystem I protein and water oxidizing part as semiconductor BiVO4. Utilizing photosystem I as the hydrogen evolving part overcomes the problems of existing hydrogen evolving p-type semiconductors such as water instability, expensive cost, few available choices and poor red light (>600 nm) absorbance. Some problems of photosystem II, oxygen evolving part of natural photosynthesis, such as demanding isolation process and D1 photo-damage can also be solved by utilizing BiVO4 as the oxygen evolving part. Preceding research has not suggested any protein-inorganic-hybrid Z-scheme composed of both materials from natural photosynthesis and artificial photosynthesis. In this study, to realize this Z-schematic electron transfer, diffusion step of electron carrier, which usually degrades natural photosynthesis efficiency, was eliminated. Instead, BiVO4 and Pt-photosystem I were all linked together by the mediator gold. Synthesized all-solid-state hybrid materials show enhanced hydrogen evolution ability directly from water when illuminated with visible light.
