  • Effect of thermal processing upon the structure formation of surimi was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), rigidity changes during heating, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC studies showed the transition temperatures and heat capacity of the proteins during heating. Thermal transition peaks of the proteins were shifted to the lower temperatures or disappeared by the addition of salt and higher heating rate or setting treatment ($4^{\circ}C$ or $40^{\circ}C$). Whereas setting at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24hr produced elastic component and showed a permanent effect in rigidity development during heating, setting at $40^{\circ}C$ for 30 min produced a temporary effect. SEM studies in conjunction with rigidity scanning provided an insight into the structural features of the gel and helped clarify the setting and protein modification effects.

  • As a first step for improvement of breeding and productivity of Epimedii Herba, the patterns of components and the difference in icariin, a main component of this plant, in compliance with seasons and places of collection were evaluated by HPLC. As a result, the patterns of components in samples collected in July-September were shown to be markedly increased compared to those collected in May. Corresponding to the alternations of the pattern, the amount of icariin, which was estimated to be 0.017% in May was found to be increased markedly up to 0.82% in September. The samples collected at Chul-won district showed the highest icariin contents (0.94%), however, those collected in China was only 50% level (0.4%) of domestic ones. These results strongly suggest that the quality of Epimedii Herba might be quite different with respect to the seasons and places of the collection.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an Instrument for the Measurement of Cognitive Conflict Levels of students who confronted with an anomalous situation in science teaming. Anomalous situation is generated when students' prediction is disconsistent with the observed fact. In this study, the researchers identified 4 components of cognitive conflict and developed three items for each component. The items were developed and revised by four pilot tests. In the first pilot test, 55 elementary school students participated in the test In the second pilot test, 88 students of the 5th and 6th grader participated in the test. The instrument of measuring cognitive conflict levels was given to the subjects right after demonstrating anomalous situation. For the demonstration, two different problem situations were developed: one was a pulley problem and the other was electric bulbs in parallel. Answered reasons for each items were analyzed to assess students' understanding on each items. In third pilot test, 125 elementary school students participated in the test. A factor analysis of the responses was carried out and reliability of the test was assessed by calculating internal consistency values. The items were finalized by three pilot tests. After 1 month after the third pilot test, researchers conducted the finalized test items to 323 students of the 5th and 6th grader. The final instrument showed moderate reliability (Cronbach-α 0.82∼0.87) and good content validity(0.93). A factor analysis of the response was carried out. 4 main factors completely coincided with 4 components that we supposed to be the conducts of cognitive conflict. The instrument can provide a means for both teachers and researchers to assess the cognitive conflict of a large number of students within a single class period. The results can be used by teachers to better understand the process of conceptual change of their students and to match instruction and materials accordingly.

  • object-oriented programming is used to develop next-generation telecommu- nications services running on the distributed processing environment. In order to test these services efficiently at the system-level during not only in the development phase but also in the operation phase, we define an embedded monitor service within the infrastructure to monitor the operation of the distributed programs, and describe a system-level test mechanism based on the monitor service. By separating the function of monitor server which monitors operations of objects and collects monitored data and that of tester which makes analysis and decides the sequence of test events, the invasive effect of monitoring can be minimized. At the same time, accurate diagnosis on the system can be achieve by exploiting the test mechanism. The mechanism, as a core component for the implementation of real-time fault-tol-erant systems, is applicable to general-purpose distributeded systems as well.

  • Seasoned and dried squid slice (SDSS) was prepared with surimi and squid, and investigated on the food component characteristics. The moisture and water activity of the SDSS slightly increased with increasing addition ratio of squid. According to the increase of addition ratio of squid, sensory scores of SDSS decreased in the color, whereas increased in the taste. There was, however, no difference in sensory flavor and texture between SDSS prepared with various ratios of squid. The results of physical properties and sensory evaluation suggested that the desirable addition ratio of squid was more than 70% based on the mix for preparing SDSS. There was no difference in total amino acid content between seasoned and dried slices with, which was prepared by a ratio of squid(70): surimi (30), and without squid. The major amino acids of SDSS were glutamic acid, leucine, lysine and threonine. The calcium and phosphorus contents of SDSS were 85.9 mg/100g and 458.3 mg/100g, respectively. The total free amino acid content and taste value of SDSS were 3,1991mg/100g and 402.00, respectively. The taste values of SDSS suggested that the major taste-active compounds were glutamic acid and aspartic acid.

  • Recently, regional society requires engineers to understand the international affairs and to be global experts endowed with leadership. General education appropriate to engineers should fulfill these needs and provide wide understandings in humanity. General sciences education should be also reinforced for the students taking low level science courses under 7th education program to improve learning ability of the major subjects in college. A general education component including humanity for the engineers could be trained continuously from primary school to college under the 2009 revised education program. Various opportunity for education should be provided through the special curriculum development at the college or department level, which trains experts who fulfill the need of community. Multi-major program is a substitute for offering the educational opportunity to the students in environmental engineering, one of multidisciplinary programs. Emphasized criteria of the curriculum requirements and adequate contents of general education need be also developed for supporting the students to take advanced courses in major.

  • The test equipment becomes more important with the development of semiconductor industry. MEMS probe is an important testing component to detect the defects from the generated electric signal when it contacts the metal pad of semiconductor devices. Ni-Pd alloy has been paid attention to as a candidate of MEMS probe material because of its high surface hardness and relatively low resistivity. In this study, electroplated Ni-Pd alloy has been prepared by using ethylene diamine as a complexing agent. Solid solution alloy coating could be formed when concentration of palladium chloride and current density were in the ranges of 1~5 mM and $0.2{\sim}1.5A/dm^2$, respectively. The increase of current density brought about an decrease in palladium content, which made both of lattice parameter and grain size smaller. As a result of grain refinement, high hardness could be obtained. However, surface cracking was observed due to residual stress when the current density was above $1.3A/dm^2$. When effects of heat treatment temperature on hardness and sheet resistance were investigated, the accompanied grain growth decreased both of them. The decrease of hardness remained stable at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. The sheet resistance was drastically reduced at $100^{\circ}C$. After that, it was found to become constant.

  • Genistein is an active component of legumes and other related food shown to be associated with prevention of degenerative diseases such as cancer through inducing signaling pathways. Treatment of genistein resulted in the induction of apoptosis in the cultured cancer cells. This induction of apoptosis was demonstrated by the Tunel assay in these cells. Unveiling the potential of genistein in cytotoxicity via apoptosis when it is treated with estrogen can predict the therapeutic capability of genistein in breast cancers in the presence of endogenous estrogen. We have found that apoptosis induced by genistein treatment in the presence of estrogen is agonistic or antagonistic depending on the concentrations and treatment periods applied in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. For the suppression of cell survival, 24 hr of treatment was required to induce a synergistic agonistic response between estrogen and genistein at low concentrations of genistein. After this period, the agonistic pattern of genistein to estrogen disappeared. The decrement of COX-2 expression in MCF-7 cells treated with genistein was accompanied with the activation of AMPK only at a high concentration of genistein. This association between AMPK activation and down-regulation of COX-2 by genistein was dampened in the presence of estrogen. It was also demonstrated that genistein and estrogen regulate cell survival and apoptosis by modulating p53 and caspase-3 in the opposite direction. These results suggest that genistein has the potential to control breast cancer development, and co-treatment with estrogen can cause agonistic or antagonistic action on breast cancer cell control.

  • Background: Adipocytes, which are the main cellular component of adipose tissue, are the building blocks of obesity. The nuclear hormone receptor $PPAR{\gamma}$ is a major regulator of adipocyte differentiation and development. Obesity, which is one of the most dangerous yet silent diseases of all time, is fast becoming a critical area of research focus. Methods: In this study, we initially aimed to investigate whether the ginsenoside Rf, a compound that is only present in Panax ginseng Meyer, interacts with $PPAR{\gamma}$ by molecular docking simulations. After we performed the docking simulation the result has been analyzed with several different software programs, including Discovery Studio, Pymol, Chimera, Ligplus, and Pose View. All of the programs identified the same mechanism of interaction between $PPAR{\gamma}$ and Rf, at the same active site. To determine the drug-like and biological activities of Rf, we calculate its absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxic (ADMET) and prediction of activity spectra for substances (PASS) properties. Considering the results obtained from the computational investigations, the focus was on the in vitro experiments. Results: Because the docking simulations predicted the formation of structural bonds between Rf and $PPAR{\gamma}$, we also investigated whether any evidence for these bonds could be observed at the cellular level. These experiments revealed that Rf treatment of 3T3-L1 adipocytes downregulated the expression levels of $PPAR{\gamma}$ and perilipin, and also decreased the amount of lipid accumulated at different doses. Conclusion: The ginsenoside Rf appears to be promising compound that could prove useful in antiobesity treatments.
