During the development of a weapon system, the concept of maintainability is used for quantitatively predicting and analyzing the maintenance time. However, owing to the complexity of a weapon system, the standard maintenance time predicted during the system's development differs significantly from the measured time during the operation of the equipment after the system's development. According to the analysis presented in this paper, the maintenance time can be predicted by considering the system's complexity on the basis of the military specifications, and the procedure can be Part B of Procedure II and Method B of Procedure V. The maintenance work elements affected by the system complexity were identified by the analytic hierarchy process technique, and the system-complexity-reflecting weights of the maintenance work elements were calculated by the Delphi method, which involves expert surveys. Based on MIL-HDBK-470A and MIL-HDBK-472, it is going to present a Korean-style maintainability prediction method that reflects system complexity of weapons systems.
Complexity paradigm is a scientific amalgam that aims to unite a range of theoretical perspectives and research agendas across natural and social sciences. Proponents of complexity paradigm lay claims to an increasing number of areas of study, including artificial life, interpersonal networks, internal/international patterning of organizations, mapping of cyberspace, etc. All of those can be subsumed under the title, 'complexity turn.' Owing to the idea of open system, complexity paradigm has developed a number of new concepts/themes/perspectives that help to account for the complex mechanism of living and non-living creatures. A complex system comprises a number of properties such as disequilibrium, nonlinearity, dissipative structure, self-organization fractal geometry, autopoiesis, coevolution. Following a brief introduction to theoretical development, those properties are succinctly discussed. The complexity turn has provided a wealth of insights that enable to analyze system operations of any kind. It contributes a lot to illuminating the working of social system as well. The most remarkable attempt may be Niklas Luhmann's 'neofunctional system theory.' Merits and shortcomings of complexity paradigm were examined and its future prospect were assessed with the conclusion that complexity paradigm would continue to be useful both as effective transdisciplinary framework and powerful analytical tool.
Recently, a study has been progressed about the energy storage system for resolving energy shortage problems in the world. The energy storage system can maximize energy storage system's energy usage by monitoring and controlling about all energy infrastructures on energy network. However, compatibility problems among main components or devices of the energy storage system are obstacles to development of energy storage system products. An extensible profile and extensible profile verification software being able to verify the extensible profile have been required in order to resolve compatibility problems. In this paper, the study on complexity analysis for the extensible profile verification software for the energy storage system is performed. A XML based profile and C language structure based profile are used for analysis of the profile verification software. The complexity of complex verification structure that parses the XML based profile several times and simple verification structure that parses the C language structure based profile are analyzed and compared. Time complexity, space complexity, and cyclomatic complexity are used for complexity analysis. By using these complexity analysis, the study result that compares and analyzes the complexity of XML based and C language structure based profile verification software is presented.
Objective: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a task complexity model combining task design aspects and complexity dimensions and to explain an approach to identifying and organizing task complexity factors based on the model. Background: Task complexity is a critical concept in describing and predicting human performance in complex systems such as nuclear power plants(NPPs). In order to understand the nature of task complexity, task complexity factors need to be identified and organized in a systematic manner. Although several methods have been suggested for identifying and organizing task complexity factors, it is rare to find an analytical approach based on a theoretically sound model. Method: This study regarded a task as a system to be designed. Three levels of design ion, which are functional, behavioral, and structural level of a task, characterize the design aspects of a task. The behavioral aspect is further classified into five cognitive processing activity types(information collection, information analysis, decision and action selection, action implementation, and action feedback). The complexity dimensions describe a task complexity from different perspectives that are size, variety, and order/organization. Combining the design aspects and complexity dimensions of a task, we developed a model from which meaningful task complexity factors can be identified and organized in an analytic way. Results: A model consisting of two facets, each of which is respectively concerned with design aspects and complexity dimensions, were proposed. Additionally, twenty-one task complexity factors were identified and organized based on the model. Conclusion: The model and approach introduced in this paper can be effectively used for examining human performance and human-system interface design issues in NPPs. Application: The model and approach introduced in this paper could be used for several human factors problems, including task allocation and design of information aiding, in NPPs and extended to other types of complex systems such as air traffic control systems as well.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop visual complexity metrics based on theoretical bases. Background: With the development of IT technologies, drivers process a large amount of information caused by automotive human-machine interface (HMI), such as a cluster, a head-up display, and a center-fascia. In other words, these systems are becoming more complex and dynamic than traditional driving systems. Especially, these changes can lead to the increase of visual demands. Thus, a concept and tool is required to evaluate the complicated systems. Method: We reviewed prior studies in order to analyze the visual complexity. Based on complexity studies and human perceptual characteristics, the dimensions characterizing the visual complexity were determined and defined. Results: Based on a framework and complexity dimensions, a set of metrics for quantifying the visual complexity was developed. Conclusion: We suggest metrics in terms of perceived visual complexity that can evaluate the in-vehicle displays. Application: This study can provide the theoretical bases in order to evaluate complicated systems. In addition, it can quantitatively measure the visual complexity of In-vehicle information system and be helpful to design in terms of preventing risks, such as human error and distraction.

The human performance issues and increased automation issues in advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are critical to numerous stakeholders in the nuclear industry, due to the undesirable implications targeting the Man Machine Interface Systems (MMIS) complexity of (Generation IV) SMRs. It is imperative that the design of future SMRs must address these problems. Nowadays, Multi Agent Systems (MAS) are used in the industrial sector to solve multiple complex problems; therefore incorporating this technology in the proposed innovative SMR (I-SMR) design will contribute greatly in the decision making process during plant operations, also reduce the number MCR operating crew and human errors. However, it is speculated that an increased level of complexity will be introduced. Prior to achieving the objectives of this research, the tools used to analyze the system for complexity reduction, are the McCabe's Cyclomatic complexity metric and the Henry-Kafura Information Flow metric. In this research, the systems engineering approach is used to guide the engineering process of complexity reduction concept of the system in its entirety.
This investigation, based on empirical research, examined the role of complexity and order in the aesthetic experience of architectural forms. The basic assumption of this study was that perception in architectural form is a process of interpreting a pattern in a reductive way. Thus, perceptual arousal is not determined by the absolute complexity of a configuration. Rather, the actual perceived complexity is a function of the organization of the system (order). In addition, complexity and order were defined and categorized into four variables according to their significant characteristics; simple order, complex order, random complexity, and lawful complexity. The series of experiments confirmed that there is a point on the psychological complexity dimension which is optimal. By demonstrating that consensual and individual aesthetic preference can be measured to have a unimodal function of relationship with complexity, the results of the experiments indicated that complexity and orderliness are effective design factors for enhancing aesthetics of a building facade. This investigation offered a conceptual framework that relates the physical (architectural form) and psychological factors (complexity and order) operating in the aesthetic experience of building facades.
In this paper, we present a new JPEG (Joint Photograph Experts Group) compression architecture which compresses still image into fixed size of bitstream to use restricted system memory efficiently. The size of bitstream is determined by the complexity of image and the quantization table. But the quantization table is set in advance the complexity of image is the essential factor. Therefore the size of bitstream for high complexity image is large and the size for low complexity image is small. This means that the management of restricted system memory is difficult. The proposed JPEG encoder estimates the size of bitstream using the correlation between consecutive frames and selects the quantization table suited to the complexity of image. This makes efficient use of system memory.
The standard of evaluating function of speech coder for mobile telecommunication can be shown in channel capacity, noise immunity, encryption, complexity and encoding delay largely. This study is an algorithm to reduce complexity applying to CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) mobile telecommunication system, which has a benefit of keeping the existing advantage of telecommunication quality and low transmission rate. This paper has an objective to reduce the computing complexity by controlling the frequency band nonuniform during the changing process of LSP(Line Spectrum Pairs) parameters from LPC(Line Predictive Coding) coefficients used for EVRC(Enhanced Variable-Rate Coder, IS-127) speech coders. Its experimental result showed that when comparing the speech coder applied by the proposed algorithm with the existing EVRC speech coder, it's decreased by 45% at average. Also, the values of LSP parameters, Synthetic speech signal and Spectrogram test result were obtained same as the existing method.

The discipline of software performance is very broad; it influences all aspects of the software development lifecycle, including architecture, design, deployment, integration, management, evolution and servicing. Thus, the complexity of software is an important aspect of development and maintenance activities. Much research has been dedicated to defining different software measures that capture what software complexity is. In most cases, the description of complexity is given to humans in forms of numbers. These quantitative measures reflect human-seen complexity with different levels of success. Software complexity growth has been recognized to be beyond human control. In this paper, we have focused our discussion on the increasing software complexity and the issue with the problems being faced in managing this complexity. This increasing complexity in turn affects the software productivity, which is declining with increase in its complexity.
