Rating curve method and SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) were applied to estimate pollutant loading from Hwa-Ong watershed in Kyunggi-Do. Rating curves were derived from sampling sites and applied to the whole watershed. SWMM version 4.4 was calibrated by field data of sampling sites and applied to the whole watershed. The pollutant loading estimated by rating curve was slightly higher than the one by SWMM, but the difference was not significant considering diffuse pollution characteristics of wide variation. Land use effect of the subcatchments could not be incorporated logically in rating curve method and difficulty in extrapolation was experienced, therefore, the estimate by rating curve method was thought to be less confident. SWMM was satisfactory in estimation of pollution loading, and its great flexibility worked well to describe complex nonurban land uses. Neither of them could exactly describe complex natural phenomena, but SWMM was preferred in this study due to its flexibility and logical hydrologic processes including land use effects. Use of reasonable watershed model rather than rating curve method for watershed pollutant loading estimate can be more practical and is recommended.

The objectives of this paper were to validate the proposed network flow model using field data and to demonstrate the model applicability for various purposes. The model was tested with data from the Banweol watershed, where an intentive streamflow gauging system has been established. Model parameters were not calibrated with field data so that it can be validated as ungaged conditions. Three different schemes were employed to represent the drainage system of the tested watershed : a single, complex, and detailed network. The single network assumed the watershed as a cell, while complex and detailed networks considered several cells. The results from different schemes were individually compared satisfactorily to the observed daily stages at the Banweol reservoir located at the outlet of the watershed. The results from three schemes were in close agreement with each other, Justifying that the model performs very well for different network schemes being used. Daily streamflow from three network schemes was compared for a selected reach within the watershed. The results were very close to each other regardless of network formulation. And the model was applied to simulate daily streamflow before and after the construction of a reservoir at a reach. The differences were discussed, which reflected the influences of the dam construction upon the downstream hydrology. Similar appliocations may be possible to identify the effects of hydraulic structures on streamflow.

Event mean concentration (EMC) of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is primary information for non-point source pollution assessment of a watershed. The EMCs for various types of agriculture such as dairy and crop farming under different climate and geologic conditions are not fully investigated. A diary- and cropfarming complex agricultural watershed in Piedmont region in Maryland, USA has been monitored for 10 years as a section 319 national monitoring program of US EPA. Dairy manure was the main source of fertilizer for crop farming in this watershed. Observed mean concentrations of N and P for each event were analyzed. Distribution of EMCs for N and P showed a wide range of variations. Representative EMCs of T-N and $NO_{3}-N$ tended to be higher than those reported for other agricultural watersheds. This study confirmed that site-specific EMC information for various agricultural practices is required for better assessment of non-point source pollution using EMC method.

A high speed context-free marker-controlled and minima imposition-free watershed transform is proposed for efficient multi-object detection and segmentation from a complex background. The context-free markers are extracted from a complex backgrounded multi-object image using a noise tolerant attention operator. These make marker-controlled watershed possible for the over-segmentation reduction without region merging. The proposed method presents a marker-constrained labeling that can speed up the segmentation of a marker-controlled watershed transform by eliminating the necessity of the minima imposition. Simulation results show that the proposed method can efficiently detects and segments multiple objects from a complex background while reducing over- segmentation and the computation time.

We propose a new marker driven Watershed algorithm for automated segmentation of clustered cell from microscopy image with less over segmentation. The Watershed Transform is able to segment extremely complex objects which are highly touched and overlapped each other. The success of the Watershed Transform depends essentially on the finding markers for each of the objects of interest. For extracting of markers positioning around center of each cell we used radial symmetry and iterative voting algorithms. With synthetic and real images, we quantitatively demonstrate the performance of our method and achieved better results than the other compared methods.
Hydrologic models, as a useful tool for understanding the hydrologic phenomena in the watershed, have become more complex with the increase of computer performance. The hydrologic model, with complex configurations and powerful performance, facilitates a broader understanding of the effects of climate and soil in hydrologic partitioning. However, the more complex the model is, the more effort and time is required to drive the model, and the more parameters it uses, the less accessible to the user and less applicable to the ungauged watershed. Rather, a parsimonious hydrologic model may be effective in hydrologic modeling of the ungauged watershed. Thus, a semi-distributed hydrologic partitioning model was developed with minimal composition and number of parameters to improve applicability. In this study, the validity and performance of the proposed model were confirmed by applying it to the Namgang Dam, Andong Dam, Hapcheon Dam, and Milyang Dam watersheds among the Nakdong River watersheds. From the results of the application, it was confirmed that despite the simple model structure, the hydrologic partitioning process of the watershed can be modeled relatively well through three vertical layers comprising the surface layer, the soil layer, and the aquifer. Additionally, discussions were conducted on antecedent soil moisture conditions widely applied to stormwater estimation using the soil moisture data simulated by the proposed model.
The temporal and spatial analyses of total nitrogen (TN) fractionation were conducted in order to understand 1) total nitrogen components in streams and 2) their patterns in rainy and dry seasons. The result showed that the concentration of nitrogen components in stream water was lower in non-urban area and getting higher in urban area. Dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) was 95~97.7% of total nitrogen in streams, and the proportion of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) was higher with increasing urban area. The concentration of total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) were highest in winter among four seasons. The result was showed that concentration of $NH_3-N$ was same variation as concentrations of TN and $NO_3-N$ in urban-rural complex and urban areas, except rural areas. During rainy season, concentrations of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) and $NH_3-N$ increased in rural areas and decreased in both urban-rural complex and urban areas. Correlation between total nitrogen components and land uses was positively correlated with site > paddy, and negatively correlated with forest. The variation of total nitrogen concentration was determined by $NO_3-N$ in non-urban areas, by $NO_3-N$ and $NH_3-N$ in urban-rural complex and by $NH_3-N$ in the urban areas.

This paper proposes a hybrid algorithm combining K-means clustering and watershed algorithms for flower segmentation and counting. We use the K-means clustering algorithm to obtain the main colors in a complex background according to the cluster centers and then take a color space transformation to extract pixel values for the hue, saturation, and value of flower color. Next, we apply the threshold segmentation technique to segment flowers precisely and obtain the binary image of flowers. Based on this, we take the Euclidean distance transformation to obtain the distance map and apply it to find the local maxima of the connected components. Afterward, the proposed algorithm adaptively determines a minimum distance between each peak and apply it to label connected components using the watershed segmentation with eight-connectivity. On a dataset of 30 images, the test results reveal that the proposed method is more efficient and precise for the counting of overlapped flowers ignoring the degree of overlap, number of overlap, and relatively irregular shape.

This thesis aims to estimate the rainfall runoff from paddy field in a small watershed during irrigation period. When the data observed at the proposed site are not available, the Monthly Runoff Equation of Korean Rivers which was derived from data observed under the following assumptions is used to study the water balance. a. Monthly base flow was assumed as 10. 2mm even if these is no mouthly rainmfall. b. Monthly comsumption of rainfall was ranged from 100 to 2OOmm without relation to the rainfall depth. However, the small watershed which consists mainly of paddy fields encounters severe droughts and accordingly the baseflow is negligible. Under the circumstances the author has developed the following equation called "Flood Irrigation Method for Rainfall Runoff "taking account of the evapotranspiration, precipitation, seepage, less of transportation, etc. R= __ A 7000(1 +F) -5n(n+1)+ (n+1)(Pr-S-Et)] where: R: runoff (ha-m) A: catchment area (ha) F: coefficient of loss (o.o-0. 20) Pr: rainfall (mm) S: seepage Er: evapotranspiration (mm) To verify the above equation, the annual runoff ratio for 28 years was estimated using the Monthly Runoff Equation of Korean Rivers the Flood Irrigation Method and the Complex Hydrograph Method based on meteorological data observed in the Dae Eyeog project area, and comparison was made with data observed in the Han River basin. Consequently, the auther has concluded that the Flood Irrigation Method is more consi- stent with the Complex Hydrograph Method and data observed than the Monthly Runoff Equation of Korean Rivers.

There are demands for water environmental analysis of discharge processes in paddy fields, however, it is not fully understood in nutrients discharge process for watershed modeling. As hydrological processes both surface and ground water and agricultural water managements are so complex in paddy fields, the development of lowland paddy fields watershed model is more difficult than upland watershed model. In this research, the improvement of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model for a paddy watershed was conducted. First, modification of surface inundated process was developed in improved pot hole option. Those modification was evaluated by monitoring data. Second, the monitoring data in river and drainage channel in lowland paddy fields from 2012 to 2014 were analyzed to understand discharge characteristics. As a case study, Imbanuma basin, Japan, was chosen as typical land and water use in Asian countries. In this basin, lowland paddy fields are irrigated from river water using small pumps that were located in distribution within the watershed. Daily hydrological fluctuation was too complex to estimate. Then, to understand surface and ground water discharge characteristics in irrigation (Apr-Aug) and non-irrigation (Sep-Mar) period, the water and material balance analysis was conducted. The analysis was composed two parts, watershed and river channel blocks. As results of model simulation, output was satisfactory in NSE, but uncertainty was large. It would be coming from discharge process in return water. The river water and ground water in paddy fields were exchanged each other in 5.7% and 10.8% to river discharge in irrigation and non-irrigation periods, respectively. Through this exchange, nutrient loads were exchanged between river and paddy fields components. It suggested that discharge from paddy fields was not only responded to rainfall but dynamically related with river water table. In general, hydrological models is assumed that a discharge process is one way from watershed to river. However, in lowland paddy fields, discharge process is dynamically changed. This function of paddy fields showed that flood was mitigated and temporally held as storage in ground water. Then, it showed that water quality was changed in mitigated function in the water exchange process in lowland paddy fields. In future, it was expected that hydrological models for lowland paddy fields would be developed with this mitigation function.
