Stability of High Internal Phase Emulsions

  • We have studied the stability of W/O high internal phase emulsions(HIPE) containing water, cetyl dimethicone copolyol and oils varying magnesium sulfate in the range 0 to 0.5wt% and oil polarities, respectively. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The greater the increase of concentrated modulus was, the less coalescence occurred and the more consistent the concentrated emulsions were. The increasing pattern of complex modulus versus volume fraction has been explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsion. The stability is dependent on: (i) the choice of the oil is important, the requirements coincide with the requirements for the formation of the rigid liquid crystalline phases :5; and (ii) addition of salts the aqueous phase opposes the instability due to coalescence:. Increasing the salt concentration increases the refractive index of the aqueous phase. It lowers the difference in the refractive index between the oil and aqueous phases. This decreases the attraction between the water domains, thus increasing the stability.

  • The emulsion stability of cosmetic creams based on the water-in-oil (W/O) high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) containing water, squalane oil and cetyl dimethicone copolyol was investigated with various compositional changes, such as electrolyte concentration, oil polarity and water phase volume fraction. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The slope change of complex modulus versus water phase volume fraction monitored in the linear viscoelastic region could be explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsions: the greater the increase of complex modulus was, the more the coalescence occurred and the less consistent the emulsions were. Emulsion stability was dependent on the addition of electrolyte to the water phase. Increasing the electrolyte concentration increased the refractive index of the water phase, and thus decreased the refractive index difference between oil and water phases. This decreased the attractive force between water droplets, which resulted in reducing the coalescence of droplets and increasing the stability of emulsions. Increasing the oil polarity tended to increase emulsion consistency, but did not show clear difference in cream hardness among the emulsions.

Ellipsometry를 이용한 Low-k SiOCH 박막의 유전특성에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Dielectric Characteristics of the Low-k SiOCH Thin Films by Ellipsometry)

  • We studied the dielectric characteristics of low-k SiOCH thin films by Ellipsometry. The SiOCH thin films were prepared by deposition of BTMSM precursors on p-Si wafer by CCP-PECVD method. The nano-porous structural organic/inorganic hybrid-type of SiOCH thin films correlated directly to the formation of low dielectrics close to pore(k=1). The structural groups including highly dense pores in SiOCH thin films originated the anisotropic geometry type of network structure directing to complex refractive characteristics of SiOCH single layer on the p-Si wafer. The linearly polarized beam of Xe-ramp in the range from 190 nm to 2100 nm introduced to the surface of SiOCH thin film, and the reflected beam was Elliptically polarized by complex refractive coefficients of SiOCH dipole groups. The amplitude variation $\Psi$ and phase variation $\Delta$ of the relative reflective coefficients between perpendicular and parallel components to the incident plane were measured by Ellipsometry. The complex optical constants n and k as well as the dielectric constant and thickness of SiOCH thin films were driven by the measured value of $\Psi$ and $\Delta$.

투과율의 측정 및 이를 이용한 복사물성치의 계산 (Measurements of Transmittances and Calculations of Fundamental Radiative Properties)

  • 본 연구에서는 다공성 물질을 이용한 공기용 태양열 집열기에서 사용될 수 있는 유리덮개 및 다공성 매질의 파장에 따른 투과율(transmittance)을 UV-visible spectrophotometer및 FT-IR spectrometer을 이용하여 측정하였다. 유리의 경우에는 전자기 이론으로 유도된 투과율과 실험적 투과율을 비교하여 유리의 복소굴절율(complex refractive index)을 구하였다. 또한 분산이론(classical dispersion theory)으로부터 구한 이론적 복소굴절율과 비교하였다. 다공성 매질은 15 메쉬의 stainless steel wire screen을 여러 겹으로 겹쳐 이에 대한 투과율을 측정하였다. 그리고 two-flux모델을 사용하여 흡수계수(absorption coefficient) 및 후면산란 계수(backscattering coefficient)를 구하였다.

Terahertz Complex Refractive Index and Guiding of White Staghorn Coral

  • Corals are the remains of animals that grow on warm beaches. They have been used as decorative jewels because of their variety of colors, and as medicinal materials for treating cancers, AIDS, and other therapeutic uses because of their chemical elements. Corals are mainly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and have many air pores, tens to hundreds of micrometers in size. The refractive indices and absorption coefficients of dried sliced staghorn corals are investigated using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The measured values are similar to those for CaCO3, as expected. It is observed that a sample with a microstructure formed by air pores can guide terahertz waves. The dispersion, effective index, and loss of the guiding modes of coral core surrounded by five triangular air pores are numerically calculated. The simulated spatial distribution of the electric field of the guide mode at 1.25 THz shows the mode to be tightly confined to the core.

Comparative Study of Fatty Acid Composition and Characterization of Fixed Oil of Four Peanut Varieties Available in Pakistan

  • four varieties of ground nut (Arechis hypogea) were collected from different areas of Pakistan (Tillagang, Gujar khan, Hanoi and Pipplan) from Punjab province. The oils were extracted for the evaluation of lipid. Physico-chemical values of oils were determined like refractive index, peroxide value, unsaponifiable matter, acid value, iodine value, free fatty acid and ester value. The lipid profile as indicated by GLC showed that Palmitic acid ranged from 8.2-8.8%, proportions of oleic acid and linoleic acid varied from 57.8-59.87% and 22.5-24.1% respectively. Gujar khan variety of peanut has higher % age of oil (56.79). The higher yield of oil in this variety is not at the cost of any nutritional quality of peanut oil.

반사 타원법과 투과율 분석법을 사용한 반투명 기층 위 매우 약한 광흡수 박막의 두께와 복소굴절률 정밀 결정 (Precise Determination of the Complex Refractive Index and Thickness of a Very Weakly Absorbing Thin Film on a Semi-transparent Substrate Using Reflection Ellipsometry and Transmittance Analysis)

  • 유리기층에 코팅되어 있는 박막의 광학상수를 정확하게 분석하기 위해, 반투명 기층 위에 다층박막이 코팅되어 있는 시료의 유사 투과타원 상수 표현과 투과율 표현을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 두꺼운 기층에서 일어나는 다중반사로 인한 빛의 세기를 결맞지 않도록 중첩하는 동시에, 반투명 기층의 광흡수 영역에서 기층의 흡수를 정확하게 반영함으로써 다층박막이 코팅된 반투명 기층 시료의 정확한 모델링 분석이 가능하게 하였다. 흡광도가 매우 낮은 파장대역에서 투과율 측정에 기반한 분석과 타원법에 기반한 모델링 분석 방법이 가지는 박막의 소광계수의 차이를 투과율의 민감도와 타원상수의 민감도 분석을 통하여 비교 분석하였다. 투과율 분석법과 반사 타원법을 SiN 박막이 코팅된 유리기층 시료에 적용함으로써 소광계수가 매우 작을 때에도 SiN 박막의 복소굴절률과 두께를 정확하게 결정할 수 있음을 보였다.

변형된 코노스코픽 홀로그래피를 이용한 바이어스와 공액영상의 제거 (Removal of bias and conjugate image using the modified conoscopic holography)

  • Conoscopic holography, which consists of two linear polarizers and two wave plates, and an uniaxial crystal, is incoherent holographic technology for three-dimensional display. In the uniaxial crystal, the wave from object divides into extraordinary and ordinary waves and phase difference between two waves is caused by the different refractive index of two waves. Four intensity patterns, which are made by phase difference, are obtained using LCLV(liquid crystal light valve) and conoscopic holography system. By combining four intensity patterns, the complex hologram without bias and conjugate image. In this paper, we propose the optimized system, which consists of a wave plate and a linear polarizer, and uniaxial crystal. In the proposed system, it doesn't need LCLV. By adjusting the azimuth angle of a linear polarizer and a wave plate, we derive four intensity patterns in recording plane. We demonstrate theoretically that the complex hologram with bias and a conjugate image is obtained using the proposed system.

투과스펙트라를 이용한 비정질 칼코게나이드 $Ge_xSe_{100-x}$(x=25, 95) 박막의 복소굴절률 평가 (Evaluation for the complex refractive indices of amorphous chalcogeoides $Ge_xSe_{100-x}$(x=25,95) from the transmission spectra)

  • 칼코게나이드(chalcogenide)계 비정질 반도체는 그들의 독특한 광학적, 전기적 특성 때문에 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 비정질 Se는 유연한 원자구조로 인해 가장 먼저 광학적으로 상용화되었으며, 응용성이 매우 큰 반도체 재료중 하나로 Ge-Se와 같이 Se를 기본으로 한 칼코게나이드 유리 반도체가 주목받고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 비정질 칼코게나이드 $Ge_xSe_{100-x}$(x=25,95) 조성에 대한 광학적 특성을 연구 하였다. 시료는 5N의 순도를 갖는 Ge, Se 물질을 준비하고 조성비에 맞추어서 석영관에 진공 봉입한 후 용융 혼합하여 $Ge_{25}Se_{75}$$Ge_{95}Se_5$조성의 두 가지 비정질 벌크를 제작하였다. 열증착 방법으로 유리 기판위에 박막을 제작하였고 UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer를 사용하여 투과도를 측정하였다. 측정한 스펙트럼을 이용하여 Swanpoel method로 굴절률을 계산하고 특성을 분석하였다.

  • 가변입사각 분광타원법(Variable Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry)을 사용하여 유기발광소자(OLED)의 발광층인 유기박막 의 광학상수와 두께를 결정하였다. 광투과영역에서 모델링분석으로 박막의 평균두께와 굴절률 분산식을 결정하고, 광흡수영역으로 확장하여 유기막의 다층구조, 각 층의 두께와 밀도 그리고 각 파장에서의 복소굴절률을 결정하였다. 분광광도계를 사용하여 구한 투과율 스펙트럼을 가변입사각 분광타원법을 사용하여 결정한 다층구조 및 복소굴절률로 계산한 투과율 스펙트럼과 비교하여 분석의 정확성을 확인하였다.
