A report by the national research council in the United States suggested that many lung cancer deaths each year be associated with breathing radon in indoor air. Most of the indoor radon comes directly from soil beneath the basement of foundations. Recently, radon released from groundwater is found to contribute to the total inhalation risk from indoor air. This study presents the quantitative assessment of human exposures to radon released from the groundwater into indoor air. At first, a three-compartment model is developed to describe the transfer and distribution of radon released from groundwater in a house through showering, washing clothes, and flushing toilets. Then, to estimate a daily human exposure through inhalation of such radon for an adult. a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic(PBPK) model is developed. The use of a PBPK model for the inhaled radon could provide useful information regarding the distribution of radon among the organs of the human body. Indoor exposure patterns as input to the PBPK model are a more realistic situation associated with indoor radon pollution generated from a three-compartment model describing volatilization of radon from domestic water into household air. Combining the two models for inhaled radon in indoor air can be used to estimate a quantitative human exposure through the inhalation of indoor radon for adults based on two sets of exposure scenarios. The results obtained from the present study would help increase the quantitative understanding of risk assessment issues associated with the indoor radon released from groundwater.
This study investigates a combined mathematical model for the quantitative estimation of regional myocardial blood flow in experimental canine coronary artery occlusion and in patients with ischemic myocardial diseases using Rb-82 dynamic myocardial positron emission tomography. The coronary thrombosis was induced using the new catheter technique by narrowing the lumen of coronary vessel gradually, which finally led to partial obstruction of coronary artery. Thirty four Rb-82 dynamic myocardial PET scans were performed sequentially for each experiment using our 5, 10 and 20 second acquisition protocol, respectively, and six to seven regions of interest were drawn on each transaxial slices, one on left ventricular chamber for input function and the others on normal and decreased perfusion myocardial segments for the flow estimation in those regions. Two compartment model and graphical analysis method have been applied to the measured sets of regional PET data, and the rate constants of influx to myocardial tissue were calculated for regional myocardial flow estimates with the two parameter fits of raw data by the Levenberg-Marquardt method. The results showed that, (I) two compartment model suggested by Kety-Schmidt, with proper modification of the measured data and volume of distribution, could be used for the simple estimation of regional myocardial blood flow, (2) the calculated regional myocardial blood flow estimates were dependent on the selection of input function, which reflected partial volume effect and left ventricular wall motion in previously used graphical analysis, and (3) mathematically fitted input and tissue time activity curves were more suitable than the direct application of the measured data in terms of convergence.

In this study, we developed a finite element model for the built-in bottom-freezer type refrigerator and then used the structural analysis method to analyze and evaluate the deflection of the doors. We tested the validity of the developed analytical model by measuring the deflection of the hinge when loads were applied to the upper and lower hinges of the refrigerating compartment and compared these with the analysis results. The comparison of the vertical displacement of the measured result and the analysis result showed an error ratio of up to 12.8%, which indicates that the analytical model is consistent. Using the analytical model composed of the cabinet, hinges and doors, we performed analyses for two cases: both doors closed, and the refrigerating door open. Since the maximum vertical displacement of the refrigerating compartment door (R-door) with the food load is smaller than the gap between the lower surface of the R-door and the upper surface of the freezer compartment door (F-door), it is judged that the R-door and the F-door do not contact when the doors are opened or closed. In addition, the analysis result showed that the difference between the vertical displacement at the hinge on the opposite side and the hinge side of the R-door is favorably smaller than the management criterion of the refrigerator manufacturer.

The flow characteristics under recirculation cool vent mode is numerically studied using commercial fluid dynamic code(CFX). For the reliable analysis, real vehicle and human FE model is employed in grid generation process. The geometrical location and shape of panel vent, and exhaust vent is set as that of real vehicle model. The flowrate of the working fluid is determined as 330CMH which is equivalent to 70 percent of maximum capacity of HVAC system. The high velocity regions are formed around 4 each panel vent. Because of the non-symmetrically located exhaust, non-uniform flow and partial backflow near the door trim is observed. Streaklines start from each panel vent show the flow pattern of the airflow in the passenger's compartment very well.

An Ozone reaction model combined with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique was developed in this research, in the simulation of ozonation, hydrodynamic behavior as well as reaction model is important because ozone is supplied to treated water as gas ozone. In order to evaluate hydrodynamic behavior in an ozone contactor, CFD technique was applied. CFD technique elucidated hydrodynamic behavior in the selected ozone contactor, which consisted of three main chambers. Three back-mixing zones were found in the contactor. The higher velocities of water were observed in the second and third compartments than that in the first compartment. The flow of the opposite direction to the main flow was observed near the water surface. Based on the results of CFD simulation, the ozone contactor was divided into small compartments. Mass balance equations were established were established in each compartment with reaction terms. This reaction model was intended to predict dissolved ozone concentration, especially. We concluded that the model could predict favorably the mass balance of ozone, namely absorption efficiency of gaseous ozone, dissolved ozone concentration and ozone consumption. After establishing the model, we discussed the effect of concentration of gaseous ozone at inlet, temperature and organic compounds on dissolved ozone concentration.
Sorption kinetics of hydrophobic organic compounds (chlorobenzene and phenanthrene) in natural wetland soils was investigated using laboratory batch adsorbers. One -site mass transfer model (OSMTM) and two compartment first-order kinetic model (TCFOKM) were used to analyze sorption kinetics. Analysis of OSMTM reveals that apparent sorption equilibria were obtained within 10 to 75 hours for chlorobenzene and 2 hours for phenanthrene, respectively. For chlorobenzene, the sorption equilibrium time for surface soil was longer than that of deeper soil presumably due to physico-chemical differences between the soils. For phenanthrene, however, no difference in sorption equilibrium time was observed between the soils. As expected from the number of model parameters involved, the three-parameter TCFOKM was better than the two-parameter OSMTM in describing sorption kinetics, The fraction of fast sorption ($f_1$) and the first-order sorption rate constants for fast ($k_1$)and slow ($k_2$) compartments were determined by fitting experimental data to the TCFOKM. The results of TCFOKM analysis indicate that the sorption rate constant in the fast compartment($k_1$) was much greater than that of slow fraction($k_2$) . The fraction of the fast sorption ($f_1$) and the sorption rate constant in the fast compartment($k_1$) were increasing in the order of increasing $k_{ow}$, phenanthrene > chlorobenzene. The first-order sorption rate constants in the fast ($k_1$) and slow ($k_2$) compartments were found to vary from $10^{-0.1}\;to\;-10^{1.0}$ and from $10^{-4}\;to-10^{-2}$, respectively.

The validation of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was conducted for the under-ventilated fire in well-confined multi-compartments representative of nuclear power plant. Numerical results were compared with experimental data obtained by the OECD/NEA PRISME project. The effects of the numerical boundary conditions (B.C.) in ventilated system and the flame suppression model applied within FDS on the thermal and chemical environments inside the compartment were discussed in details. It was found that numerical B.C. on the vent flow resulting from over-pressure at ignition and under-pressure at extinction should be considered carefully in order to predict accurately the species concentrations rather than temperatures and heat fluxes inside the multi-compartment. The default information of suppression model applied within FDS resulted in artificial phenomena such as flame extinction and re-ignition, and thus the FDS results on the under-ventilated fire showed good agreement with the experimental results as the modified suppression criteria of the fuel used was adopted.

Sorption kinetics of 2-chlorophenol(2-ChP), 2,4-dichlorophenol(2,4-DChP) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TChP), onto montmorillonite modified with hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium cations(HDTMA-mont) were investigated. One-site mass transfer model(OSMTM) and two compartment first-order kinetic model(TCFOKM) were used to analyze kinetics. As expected from the number of model parameters involved, the three-parameter TCFOKM was better than the two-parameter OSMTM in describing sorption and desorption kinetics of chlorophenols in HDTMA-mont. For all chlorophenols, the results of OSMTM analysis indicate that the predominant deprotonated speciation(at pH 9.15) exhibited higher mass transfer coefficient( $k_{s}$ ) than the protonated speciation(at pH 4.85). This is because the deprotonated speciation has stronger hydrophobic interaction than protonated speciation. Most sorption completes in three hours. The fraction of the fast sorption and the first-order sorption rate constants for the fast and slow compartments in TCFOKM were determined by fitting experimental data to the TCFOKM. The results of kinetics reveal that the fraction of the fast sorption( $f_1$) and the sorption rate constants in the fast compartments( $k_1$) were in the order 2,4,5-TChP > 2,4-DChP > 2-ChP, which agrees with the magnitude of the $K_{ow}$ . The first-order sorption rate constants in the fast compartment(10$^{0.8}$ - 10$^{1.22}$ h $r^{-1}$ ) were much larger than those in the slow compartment(10$^{-1}$.74/ - 10$^{-2}$.622/ h $r^{-1}$ ).> ).).

Oxytetracycline (OTC) has been widely used in eel culture as a therapeutic and prophylactic agent because of its broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and -negative bacteria. The oral treatment dosage of OTC approved for the treatment of edwardsiellosis, furunculosis and vibriosis in eel is 50 mg/kg/day for 3-7 days in Korea. To determine new optimum dose of OTC in eel, the pharmacokinetics of OTC after single oral administration (100 mg/kg B.W., 200 mg/kg B.W.) in cultured eel, Anguilla japonica was examined. In oral dosage of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight, the highest plasma concentrations of OTC were 1.19±0.42 ㎍/㎖ and 2.69±0.57 ㎍/㎖, respectively. Plasma concentrations of OTC were not detected after 720 h post-dose in all experiments. The kinetic profile of absorption, distribution and elimination of OTC in plasma wwas calculated fitting to a 1- and 2-compartment model by WinNonlin program. The following parameters were obtained for a single dosage of 100 and 200 mg/kg respectively: 1-compartment model, AUC= 82.48 and 432.68 ㎍*h/㎖, Tmax= 3.93 and 14.24 hr, Cmax= 0.94 and 2.34 ㎕/㎖; 2-compartment model, AUC= 448.73 and 530.65 ㎍*h/㎖, Tmax= 6.37 and 8.96 hr, Cmax= 0.90 and 3.21 ㎕/㎖.
