A common interest in gene expression data analysis is to identify genes that present significant changes in expression levels among biological experimental conditions. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian approach to make a gene-by-gene comparison in the case with a control and more than one treatment experimental condition. The proposed approach is within a Bayesian framework with a Dirichlet process prior. The comparison procedure is based on a model selection procedure developed using the discreteness of the Dirichlet process and its representation via Polya urn scheme. The posterior probabilities for models considered are calculated using a Gibbs sampling algorithm. A numerical simulation study is conducted to understand and compare the performance of the proposed method in relation to usual methods based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by a Tukey test. The comparison among methods is made in terms of a true positive rate and false discovery rate. We find that proposed method outperforms the other methods based on ANOVA followed by a Tukey test. We also apply the methodologies to a publicly available data set on Plasmodium falciparum protein.

In the machine tool industry, direct drive linear motor technology is of increasing interest as a means to achieve high acceleration, and to increase reliability. The advantages of such a motor are that it has a good linearity and has no need of such mechanical energy conversion parts, which change rotary motion into linear motion, as screws, gears, chains etc In this paper, two structures of LOA are analyzed. One is the moving-coil type LOA and the other is moving-magnet type LOA. Two types of LOA are analyzed, with reference to the following parameters as variables: magnetic field, flux linkage, motor thrust and back emf. These variables are derived by the use of analytical method in terms of two-dimensional rectangular coordinate system. The maximum values of thrust according to such design parameters as air-gap length and magnet height for each model is also represented. The results are validated extensively by comparison with finite element method. In particular, we experiment moving-coil LOA which is already manufactured and confirm that the experimental results are shown in good agreement with analysis through the comparison of between analytical and experimental results
The two major widely used building design code documents of reinforced concrete structures are the ACI 318-05 and Eurocode for the Design of Concrete Structures EC2. Therefore, a thorough comparative analysis of the provisions of these codes is required to confirm their validity and identify discrepancies in either code. In this context, provisions of flexural computations would be particularly attractive for detailed comparison. The provisions of safety concepts, design assumptions, cross-sectional moment capacity, ductility, minimum and maximum reinforcement ratios, and load safety factors of both the ACI 318-05 and EC2 is conducted with parametric analysis. In order to conduct the comparison successfully, the parameters and procedures of EC2 were reformatted and defined in terms of those of ACI 318-05. This paper concluded that although the adopted rationale and methodology of computing the design strength is significantly different between the two codes, the overall EC2 flexural provisions are slightly more conservative with a little of practical difference than those of ACI 318-05. In addition, for the limit of maximum reinforcement ratio, EC2 assures higher sectional ductility than ACI 318-05. Overall, EC2 provisions provide a higher safety factor than those of ACI 318-05 for low values of Live/Dead load ratios. As the ratio increases the difference between the two codes decreases and becomes almost negligible for ratios higher than 4.
The paper presents a comparison between a semi-implicit time integration linear finite element implementation and fully-implicit nonlinear Newton-Raphson finite element implementation of a triphasic small strain mixture formulation of an elastic partially saturated porous medium. The pore air phase pressure pa is assumed atmospheric, i.e., $p_a$ = 0, although the formulation and implementation are general to handle increase in pore air pressure as a result of loading, if needed. The solid skeleton phase is assumed linear isotropic elastic and partially saturated 'consolidation' in the presence of surface infiltration and traction is simulated. The verification of the implementation against an analytical solution for partially saturated pore water flow (no deformation) and comparison between the two implementations is presented and the important of the porosity-dependent nature of the partially saturated permeability is assessed on comparison with a commercial code for the partially saturated flow with deformation. As a result, the response of partially saturated permeability subjected to the porosity influences on the saturation of a soil, and the different behaviors of the partially saturated soil between staggered and monolithic coupled programs is worth of attention because the negative pore water pressure in the partially saturated soil depends on the difference.
Texture is an important visual feature for image analysis. Many approaches have been proposed to model and analyze texture features. Although these approaches significantly contribute to various image-based applications, most of these methods are sensitive to the changes in the scale and orientation of the texture pattern. Because textures vary in scale and orientations frequently, this easily leads to pattern mismatching if the features are compared to each other without considering the scale and/or orientation of textures. This paper suggests an Orientation Matching Scheme (OMS) to ease the problem of mismatching rotated patterns. In OMS, a pair of texture features will be compared to each other at various orientations to identify the best matched direction for comparison. A database including rotated texture images was generated for experiments. A synthetic retrieving experiment was conducted on the generated database to examine the performance of the proposed scheme. We also applied OMS to the similarity computation in a K-means clustering algorithm. The purpose of using K-means is to examine the scheme exhaustively in unpromising conditions, where initialized seeds are randomly selected and algorithms work heuristically. Results from both types of experiments show that the proposed OMS can help improve the performance when dealing with rotated patterns.

In this study, device suitability analysis is performed by comparing the performance of SiC MOSFET and GaN Transistor, which are WBG power semiconductor devices in the induction heating (IH) system. WBG devices have the advantages of low conduction resistance, switching losses, and fast switching due to their excellent physical properties, which can achieve high output power and efficiency in IH systems. In this study, SiC and GaN are applied to a general half-bridge series resonant converter topology to compare the conduction loss, switching loss, reverse conduction loss, and thermal performance of the device in consideration of device characteristics and circuit conditions. On this basis, device suitability in the IH system is analyzed. A half-bridge series resonant converter prototype using the SiC and GaN of a 650-V rating is constructed to verify device suitability through performance comparison and verified through an experimental comparison of power loss and thermal performance.

This paper, mathematically analyzes the performance of newly proposed TR-UWB system which the frequency components of a UWB pulse were processed so that the system could be implemented with ADCs of a few MHz sampling rate, and presents the comparison with an existing frequency-domain based TR-UWB system. The comparison is mainly based on the SNR ratio which depends on the mean and the variance of the frequency components. We also shows that the simulation results to support the theoretical analysis where the comparison is made under the IEEE 802.15.3a channel model as well as AWGN channel.

This study is to select an optimal object detection algorithm for designing a self-checkout counter to improve the inconvenience of payment systems for products without existing barcodes. To this end, a performance comparison analysis of YOLO v2, Tiny YOLO v2, and the latest YOLO v5 among deep learning-based object detection algorithms was performed to derive results. In this paper, performance comparison was conducted by forming learning data as an example of 'donut' in a bakery store, and the performance result of YOLO v5 was the highest at 96.9% of mAP. Therefore, YOLO v5 was selected as the artificial intelligence object detection algorithm to be applied in this paper. As a result of performance analysis, when the optimal threshold was set for each donut, the precision and reproduction rate of all donuts exceeded 0.85, and the majority of donuts showed excellent recognition performance of 0.90 or more. We expect that the results of this paper will be helpful as the fundamental data for the development of an automatic payment system using AI self-service technology that is highly usable in the non-face-to-face era.
Chloroplast genomes of two morphologically similar species, Viola selkirkii and V. ulleungdoensis, were compared. For this comparison, three individuals of V. selkirkii from Ulleung-do Island (UE), Jeju-do Island (JJ), and Hwacheon-gun (HC) and one of V. ulleungdoensis from UE were collected. According to chloroplast genome sequencing of V. selkirkii and V. ulleungdoensis, their genomes were found to contain 156,774-157,454 and 157,575 bp, respectively, and a total of 111 genes. In the comparison of the three V. selkirkii individuals, V. selkirkii obtained in UE was distinguished from those of the other regions of HC and JJ, and in the comparison of the three V. selkirkii individuals and one V. ulleungdoensis individual, V. selkirkii obtained from UE and V. ulleungdoensis were distinguished from the species in the other regions. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis revealed that 32 taxa of Viola formed a monophyletic group (bootstrap support [BS] = 100). The four Viola individuals used in this study (three V. selkirkii and one V. ulleungdoensis) formed a monophyletic group (BS = 100), which was further divided into two subclades. One subclade comprised V. selkirkii found in UE and V. ulleungdoensis, whereas the other subclade comprised V. selkirkii found in HC and JJ. These results support the view of prior studies that V. selkirkii growing in UE and V. ulleungdoensis are the same species.
This research aims to examine the effects of various types of social comparison in SNS on users' life satisfaction. For this, this research posited four types of social comparison including upward contrast, upward identification, downward contrast and downward identification that might affect SNS users' life satisfaction. Several other factors including demographic variables, SNS usage time, offline social capital and social comparison orientation as control variables were taken into account and the moderating effects of social comparison orientation in the relationships between four types of social comparison and users' life satisfaction was also examined. An online survey was employed for collecting data and the date collected were analyzed with hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed that ages and marriage status have influences on SNS users' life satisfaction. It was proven that the degrees to which SNS users participate in family activities and club/group activities in which they are interested have correlations with their life satisfaction. The findings also revealed that only upward contrast and upward identification among four types of social comparison have influences on the life satisfaction and there is the moderating effect of social comparison orientation on the relationship between upward identification and life satisfaction. On the basis of the results, the necessity of new perspectives in understanding social comparison experience in SNS as compared to the existing literature were discussed.
