A Review on Intelligent Compaction Techniques in Railroad Construction

  • The purpose of this paper was to review Intelligent Compaction (IC) techniques, which is regarded relatively new to the railroad roadbed construction activity. Most of civil structures are built on roadbed that supposed to provide adequate load bearing support to the upper structure through the qualified compaction process. However, it is not uncommon for structure failure attributed to inadequate compaction control take place in field sites. Unlike traditional compaction control method to check field density at several locations, IC techniques continuously measure various compaction quality indices that represent compaction uniformity. In this paper, a series of literature review relevant to IC techniques was conducted to provide concise summary on the following categories: 1) background of IC technique; 2) Summary of IC vendors and basic principles; 3) modeling of IC behavior, and 4) case study along with correlation between IC with other measurements. In summary, IC technologies seem to be promising in future railroad construction to achieve better compaction quality control so that the serviceability of railroad can be ensured with minimizing rehabilitation and maintenance activities.

암버럭-토사 성토 노반의 다짐 관리 방안 (A Methodology for Compaction Control of Crushed-Rock-Soil-Fills)

  • More strict construction control of railway roadbeds is demanded in high speed railway system because of heavier repeated dynamic loading than conventional railways. The aim of this study is to propose a compaction control methodology of crushed-rock-soil-fills including as large particles as $200\sim300mm$ in diameter, which are easily encountered in high speed railway roadbed. Field tensity evaluation and in turn compaction control of such crushed-rock-soil-fills are almost impossible by conventional methods such as in-situ density measurements or plate loading tests. The proposed method consists of shear wave measurements of compaction specimens in laboratory and in-situ measurements of fills. In other words, compaction control can be carried out by comparing laboratory and field shear wave velocities using as a compaction control parameter. The proposed method was implemented at a soil site in the beginning and will be expanded to crushed-rock-soil-fills in future. One interesting result is that similar relationship of shear wave velocity and water content was obtained as that of density and water content with the maximum value at the optimum moisture content.

암성토시 현장다짐특성과 다짐관리 방법의 적용성 평가 (In-situ Compaction Characteristics and Applicability Estimation of Compaction Method in Rock Fill)

  • New technology and construction methods in civil engineering area have been noticeably improved associated with the industrial development. However, thicknesses of a lift is strictly specified for subgrade and roadbed embankment as 20 cm and 30 cm in the specification of Korea Highway. Since there has been a problem to get enough amount of soils to be used for compaction, the rocks have been replaced for those. However, there is no guideline for the quality control of rock while changing compaction efficiency of equipment and physical properties of reck while changing compaction method such as thicknesses of a lift, number of compaction and etc. The main objective of this research is to establish the specification for the rock compaction method of embankment which including thickness of lift and quality control method in Korea Expressway.

  • 최근 토공사 품질관리를 위한 지능형 다짐 기술이 토공사 품질관리 기준으로 주목받고 있다. 본 연구에서는 지능형 다짐기술과 이를 활용한 토공사 품질관리 기준을 분석하고, 현장시험을 통해 지능형 다짐기술을 활용한 토공사 품질관리 시험시공 절차에 대해 고찰하였다. 실트질 모래(SM) 성토재의 현장다짐시험을 통해 다짐 횟수가 증가할수록 CMV와 기존의 다짐품질 시험결과 값이 증가하는 상관성을 확인하였다. 시험시공 데이터를 토대로 평균 CMV 및 품질관리 목표 CMV 도출을 하였다. 평판재하시험 지지력계수와 상관성 통해 목표 CMV(34.2)와 CMV 증가율 분석방법을 통해 목표 CMV(36.6)를 산정하였다. 본 논문을 통해 지능형 다짐기술을 이용한 현장 다짐 품질관리 절차 및 방법론에 대하여 논의하였으며, 아울러 해당 기술의 국내 적용 가능성을 고취시키기 위한 지능형 다짐 품질관리 방안을 제언하였다.

조립재가 흙의 다짐에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Coarse Materials on Compaction of Soil)

  • The compaction ratio of the field dry density to the maximum dry density is generally adopted as the index of quality control for embankment of earthfill structures such as Earth Dam, Sea Dike, River Bank and Road. In case of coarse materials are included in the earth material, the compaction ratio will be varied in wide range since the dry density is influenced by quantity of coarse material in the soil. The treatment for the coarse material should be controlled carefully in testing. In this study, the compaction characteristics of the soil contained the coarse materials were researched and calibration of the suitability of field quality control methods were carried out. 28 Samples were made of clay(CL) and sandy soil (SM) mixed with gravel whose content were 0, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 60% in Weight. The compaction characteristics depending on the coarse material content were analysed through 4 types of compaction tests which are A-1, B-i, C-i and D-1. The adjusting coefficients for density and moisture content namely a and ${\beta}$ respectively were proposed in order to consider the effects depending on content of the coarse materials. The test methods to control reasonably and promptly the quality of earthfill were proposed after analysing the ranges of possible errors on the relative compaction ratio between laboratory compaction methods and field density testing methods.

CGS에 의한 기초지반보강에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Ground Improvement by Compaction Grouting System)

  • The use of compaction grouting evolved in 1950's to correct structural settlement of buildings. Over the almost 50 years, the technology has been developed and is currently used in wide range of applications. Compaction grouting, the injection of a very stiff, 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major applications of compaction grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other applications include preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. In this paper, on the basis of the case history constructed in this year, a study has been performed to analyze the basic mechanism of the compaction grouting. Also, the effectiveness of the ground improvement and the bearing capacity of the compaction pile has been verified by the Cone Penetration Test(CPT) and Load Test. Relatively uniform compaction grouting column could be maintained by planning the quality control in the course of grouting. And, the Qualify Control Plan has been conceived using grout pressure, volume of grout and drilling depth.

지능형 다짐 기술 기반 토공사 다짐 품질관리 실증 연구 (Field Validation of Earthwork Compaction Quality Control Based on Intelligent Compaction Technology)

  • 본 연구에서는 경기도 소재 AY 고속도로 토공사 현장에 지능형 다짐기술을 적용해 대표적인 지능형 다짐값인 CMV를 획득했다. 시험시공을 통해 품질관리 목표 CMV를 결정하고, 이를 이용해 본 시공 구간의 다짐품질을 관리하는 과정을 실증했다. 시험시공 결과, 평판재하시험이 수행된 위치로부터 5m 이내에서 측정된 CMV의 평균값과 지지력 계수의 선형회귀식을 통해 목표 CMV를 결정하는 것이 최적임을 확인했다. 시험시공을 통해 결정된 목표 CMV를 기반으로 본 시공 구간의 다짐품질을 확인한 결과, 국내 지능형 다짐공 표준시방서에서 제시된 품질기준은 만족했지만, 오스트리아, 미국에서 제시된 품질기준은 만족하지 못했다. 특히 다짐품질의 변동성과 관련한 지표를 대부분 만족하지 못하는 것으로 나타나, 변동계수가 17~55%에 달하는 CMV의 변동성에 비해 관련 기준이 매우 엄격하게 설정되어 있음을 확인했다. 추후 추가적인 현장시험을 통해 지능형 다짐 기반 다짐품질 관리 과정을 실증하여, 각 기준에서 제시하고 있는 규정의 적절성을 검증하고 개선해야 할 것으로 보인다.

Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff, 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major uses of Compaction Grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other application include preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. The technique replaced slurry injection, or 'pressure grouting', as the preferred method of densification grouting. There are several reasons for the increased use of Compaction Grouting which can be summarized in one word: CONTROL. The low slump grout and injection processes are usually designed to keep the grout in a homogeneous mass at the point of injection, while acceptable in some limited applications, tends to quickly get out of control. Hydraulic soil fracturing can cause extensive grout travel, often well beyond the desired treatment zone. So, on the basis of the two case history constructed in recent year, a study has been peformed to analyze the basic mechanism of the Compaction Grouting and verify the effectiveness of the ground improvement using some test methods.

현장탄성계수에 근거한 보조기층 다짐관리방안 연구 (A Study on Establishing the Subbase Compaction Control Method based on the In-situ Elastic modulus)

  • 국내에서 일반적으로 보조기층재료로 사용되고 있는 보조기층 다짐재료의 역학적 특성을 반영한 실내 회복탄성계수는 역학적-경험적 포장설계법에서 적용하는 설계 인자이다. 따라서, 역학적-경험적 포장설계법의 보조기층 현장에서 실시하여야 하는 다짐관리는 다짐 후 측정된 현장 탄성계수가 설계에 적용된 실내 회복탄성계수를 만족하는지 여부를 확인하여야 할 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 기존 다짐관리 시험인 들밀도 시험과 평판재하시험(PBT)의 시험결과와 현장탄성계수와의 상관성을 분석하였고, 현장에서 탄성계수를 측정할 수 있는 소형 충격 재하시험(LFWD)을 통한 현장탄성계수와 실내 회복탄성계수와의 상관관계식과 시험간격을 제안하였다. 또한 제안된 상관관계를 이용하여 현장시험을 통한 보조기층의 다짐관리방안을 제안하였다.

Public Fill 다짐 시 급속충격다짐공법의 품질관리기준 수립을 위한 유효개량심도 분석 (Analysis of Effective Improvement Depth for Establishing Quality Control Criteria of Rapid Impact Compaction for Public Fill Compaction)

  • 일반적인 토공사에서 사용하는 진동롤러에 의한 층다짐을 급속충격다짐(RIC)공법을 이용한 일시 다짐으로 대체하면 토공에 소요되는 공사기간을 획기적으로 단축할 수 있다. 동적하중에 의한 다짐은 모래와 같은 조립질 토사에 적합한 공법으로 인식되고 있는데, 최근에는 매립 프로젝트의 주요 재료인 모래의 공급부족으로 세립분을 함유한 토사의 사용이 점차 증가하고 있다. 따라서 RIC와 같은 동적하중에 의한 다짐공법을 적용하기 위해, 세립분을 함유한 매립재료 사용 시의 유효개량심도에 대한 검증이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 깨끗한 모래인 Sand fill과 세립분이 함유된 Public fill에 대한 RIC공법 적용 전·후의 현장시험 결과를 비교하여 세립분 함량에 따른 RIC공법의 유효개량심도에 대한 영향을 검토하고, 콘저항치 qc를 사용한 다짐 품질관리기준과 관련된 문제를 논의하였다. 결론적으로 세립분을 포함하는 다양한 종류의 매립토사에 대한 다짐 품질관리를 위해서는 qc 측정값의 정규화가 필요하며, 깨끗한 모래의 상대밀도 Dr=70%에 해당하는 다짐 품질관리기준은 정규화 콘저항치 Qtn,cs=110으로 평가되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로, RIC 품질관리 시에 적용 가능한 매립토사의 세립분 함량을 고려한 심도별 qc 품질관리기준을 제안하였다.
