Menopausal Symptoms and Depression Among Midlife Women (중년여성의 폐경 증상과 우울)

  • Purpose: This study was descriptive survey research to examine the factors affecting menopause, depression and menopausal symptoms, and the relations among these factors in South Korean midlife women. Methods: The subjects were 319 midlife women in Daegu City. Measures were Zung's Self-Report Depression Scale (1979) to check depression, and the Midlife Women's Symptom Index developed by Im (2006) to check menopausal symptoms. Data were collected from June 1 to July 31, 2010. Collected data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's correlation coefficient through SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: There was a statistically significant correlation between depression and menopausal symptoms (r=.692, p<.001). The factors affecting depression were age (r=.194, p<.001), income (r=-.307, p<.001), exercise (r=-.602, p<.001), and menopausal status (r=.224, p<.001). The factors affecting menopausal symptoms were exercise (r=-.158, p<.037), menstrual pain (r=-.171, p = .004) and menopausal status (r=.222, p<.001). Conclusion: Intervention programs for decreasing menopausal symptoms in midlife women should be focused on relieving menopausal pain and encouraging excise from youth. Further studies will be needed to examine the relations among other factors including living style, area and menopausal symptoms.

Factors associated with Sexually Transmitted Infections among Korean Adolescents (남·여 청소년에서의 성 매개 감염 관련요인)

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the factors influencing sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Korean adolescents 12 to 18 years. Methods: Using statistics from 10-11th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, secondary analysis was conducted. The study sample consisted of 4,886 boys and 1,998 girls who had reported initiating sexual intercourse. Results: The proportion of adolescents who had a sexually transmitted infection was 8.8% of boys and 11.0% of girls. In multiple regression analysis, grade, smoking, first intercourse before middle school, intercourse after drinking alcohol, living without family, large amounts of pocket money were factors associated with sexually transmitted infection for both boys and girls. Use of condom is related to STI contraction of boys only. Formal sex education was not associated with reducing risk of STI. Conclusion: The results of this study show the factors associated with STI among Korean adolescents. Gender-related effective interventions should be taken into consideration in school-based sex education programs.

Influencing factors to Academic Achievement according to Demographic and Socio-economic Characteristics, Health Behaviors and Health Status in Korean Adolescents (중·고등학생들의 인구사회경제적 특성, 건강관련행위 및 주관적 건강인지가 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine whether demographic and socio-economic characteristics, health behaviors and health status are related to academic achievement in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behaviors web-based Survey(KYRBWS) administered in 2018 were analyzed; 60,040 students in middle and high school participated in the survey. It was conducted frequency analysis, Rao-Scott chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis after adjusted for variables such as age, school grade. Results: The significant influencing factors on academic achievement were family economic status, living with parents, subjective health status, smoking experience, alcohol use experience, eating breakfast, sleeping, internet use during weekdays, depressive symptom(p<.001). The odds ratio for achieving higher academic achievement compared with those who never smoked was 1.50(p<.001). Conclusion: I found that students' undesirable health behaviors affect their academic performance. To improve academic achievement, I recommend intervention programmes such as school health promotion that reduce undesirable health related behaviors.

  • There are three goals of college students volunteerism. First, to act up to community needs. Second, to strengthen the academic ability and social responsibility, required skill as a citizen. Third, to provide opportunity for students quantitatively as well as qualitatively. We have many social backgrounds why we need beauty volunteerism but, if we summarize, things going like this, 1. An advanced age has come, and most of the elderly citizens are suffering from financial difficulties. 2. They have strong desire for youth regardless their physical mental aging. 3. The elderly citizens: living in solitude, the disabled, war veteran's family and low-income family. 4. The coverage of beauty is getting various and has many services areas. Up to present, beauty services are just limited to hair but skin and make-up have the various ways. This study final aims are how to do effective healthy volunteer activity and develop a program to fit according to each person's major, improve the curriculum in order to have effective volunteerism.

Smoking and Drinking Behaviors of Korean Female Adolescent according to Early Menarche (여자 청소년의 초경시기에 따른 흡연 및 음주행위)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify differential impacts on smoking and drinking behaviors according to early menarche. Methods: 31,277 Korean female adolescents who had undergone menarche were included. Among them, 1,822 participants(5.8%) who experienced menarche in elementary school under 4th grade were assigned to early menarche group and others were was assigned normal menarche group. Using 11th(2015) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: Adjusted confounding variables were analyzed and it was found that both drinking and smoking behaviors were higher in early menarche group. The participants with early menarche showed higher risk of non-daily smoking(OR=1.39, 95%CI=1.18-1.63), light daily smoking(OR=1.64, 95%CI=1.14-2.35) and moderate-to-heavy daily smoking(OR=3.15, 95%CI=2.02-4.92). Also, in the drinking behaviors, the risk of light and heavy drinking was higher than those of normal menarche group. Conclusions: Finding of this study showed Early menarche adolescents were associated with heavy smoking and drinking behaviors compared to normal menarche. Further studies are needed more evaluations.

A Study on Architectural Characteristics of Community Church in County, VA in U. S. A. (미국동부 카운티 내 지역교회에 관한 건축적 특성에 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand a architectural characteristics of local church in Virginia, U. S. This study focuses on not only analyzing the worship and service program inherent in the site planning of local church but also introducing worship service space and chancel elements of it in the village of garden area. We surveyed five protestant churches where are located in suburban and rural area outside of Midlothian city in the early August, 2010. I surveyed church building site and worship service space of churches focused on platform design, interviewed the historical background and program of churches with ministers, and corrected annual calender and newsletter. The results of this study are as follows. First, the characteristics of site plan have a comfortable parking lots and site of churchyard(cemetery) with playground that can take an activities out of chapel. The axis of church building follows to front street. Second, worship services keep two types of traditional and comtemporary worship in order to consider of both adult and youth members. The worship hall has a balance of bilateral symmetry. Third, the form of platform is built that is able to perform a music drama and movement of sermon without only one church, GraceLand Church that church building has over fifty years, and they stick to simple traditional type of Chancel that is established by pulpit, table(altar), baptistery(only baptist church), music instruments, and so on.

The Effect of obesity, depression, self esteem, body image on adolescents' life satisfaction (청소년의 비만, 우울, 자아존중감 및 신체 이미지가 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purposes of this study were to investigate the life satisfaction, obesity, depression, self esteem, body image of adolescents by their demographic characteristics, to analyze factors impacting on life satisfaction, and to provide basic data to intervention programs for bright and healthy development. Methods: The data in this study came from the Korea Youth Survey Data collected through questionnaires from 10,156 students. To investigate the causal relationship between each variable presented in the research model, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis were carried out by using SPSS Ver. 18.0. Results: The most impacting factor on adolescents' life satisfaction were the self-esteem and depression, followed by the economic level, regular exercise, and regular eating. In conclusion, the strongest factors that influenced adolescents' life satisfaction were self-esteem and depression. Also we found that regular eating, regular exercise, and adequate sleep were the important causes of raising adolescents' life satisfaction. Conclusions: In order to enhance the adolescents' life satisfaction, we should make an effort to increase self-esteem, to prevent obesity, and to reduce depression through regular exercise and eating, adequate sleep. Therefore, it is important to recognize the importance of regular exercise and eating through health education. In addition, it is needed desperately to develop sleeping education program and to efforts to ensure sleeping right of adolescents.

A Survey of the Health Risk Behaviors of Middle School Students in Kyungju (경주지역 일부 중학생의 건강관련 위험행동)

  • The purpose of this study was to collect basic data to develop school health policy and health promotion program. This survey measured the levels of risk behaviors in six categories in a middle school students in Kyungju(n=490). The data was collected from November to December 2000. It was done using a 1999 version of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey of CDC, which was translated and make a partial modification. The major results were as follows. Many middle school students engaged in behaviors that will increase the likelihood of death or illness. 1) A high percentage of middle school students engaged in behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and school-related violence (42.1 -78%) 2) Students who perceived their school life are happy experienced more depression(p=.000) and Students who perceived their school and family life are so-and-so seriously considered attempting suicide(p = .000) than other subgroup. 3) In spite of they were normal weight, 14.5% of students considered themselves overweight. 4) There was significantly difference or correlation between health risk behaviors and grade, parents educational level perception of school life and performance, perception of family life and religion. Based on this results of study, it is necessary to develop school health program and school health policy to prevent health risk behaviors and improve health promotion especially considering characteristics of middle school students.

Factors associated with Unintentional Injuries to Korean Adolescents at School: A Multilevel Study (다수준 분석을 이용한 청소년의 학교 내 손상 관련 요인)

  • Purpose: This study aims at identifying individual- and school-level factors associated with unintentional injuries to Korean adolescents at school by applying multilevel modeling. Methods: From the database of the eleventh Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS), the researchers selected 68,043 adolescents from the $7^{th}$ to the $12^{th}$ grades. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$ test for prevalence and multilevel modeling for related factors of unintentional injuries at school. Results: About 22.9 percent of the adolescents had treatment experiences for unintentional injuries at school in the past 12 months. At the individual level, the significant factors associated with unintentional injuries at school included gender, grade, academic achievement, current smoking, alcohol consumption, frequency of high caffeine intake, depression, and relief of fatigue after sleep. At the group level, the significant factors included number of physical education per week and safety education. Conclusion: School based injury prevention programs should be sensitive to both individual- and school-level factors associated with unintentional injury at school among Korean adolescents.

Leisure-time Activities Associated with Obesity in Adolescents (청소년의 비만과 여가활동과의 관련성)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the differences between obese and non-obese students in sedentary leisure-time activities. Methods: The survey was performed with 725 students from 3 different middle schools in Kyeonggi-do. In order to measure the degree of obesity. used are BMI and "2007 Korea Children and Adolescents' Average Scale". With regard to the leisure activities. YRBS and "youth Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance" were referred. Results: The rate of boys' overweight was 18.0% and that of girls was 11.8%. Students watching TV 3hours+/day were 16.6% for boys and 30.6% for girls during weekday. Respective values for weekend were 56.8% and 71.4%. Students using computer 3hours+/day were both 14.5% for boys and girls during weekday. and 53.7% for boys and 36.7% for girls during weekend. 14.9% of boys and 21.2% of girls didn't participate in vigorous physical activities and 5.9% for boys and 11.2% for girls didn't participate in moderate physical activities. The differences between obese and non-obese students in sedentary activities were not significant. However. the difference in leisure-time activity was significant. Conclusion: The programs for prevention and management of adolescents' obesity have to be focused on reducing their sedentary activities and improving physical activities.
