  • This study was conducted to investigate the risk factors affecting dental caries in children by using the 2018 children's oral health survey data. The study was conducted on 20,235 children who were 12 years of age. The survey items examined general characteristics, dental dietary behavior, the oral condition, and the behavioral factors related to oral health. The results showed that gender, region, economic level, subjective oral health condition, dental dietary behavior, oral condition and oral health-related behavior were all risk factors. Those children with oral conditions particularly showed a higher risk of the dental caries symptoms of dental calculus, dental bleeding, tooth pain and white spot teeth. The oral health-related behaviors were found to be tooth brushing less than two times a day, the risk of not using a handle to hold dental floss and not using dental floss. Our results showed that countries or communities can diagnose and manage dental well-being early on for children with the highest sensitivity of dental health and they need to continue to establish a dental well-being management system for the oral health care of children. In addition, oral health education should be expanded, which can improve oral health care habits of children and adolescents. Further, an oral health policy system for improving community programs to prevent dental and community utilization is needed.

  • Objectives: This case study was conducted to assess the changes in the oral health status of older individuals with hearing and visual impairments through home oral health care based on community care. Methods: The participants were two older adults with hearing and visual impairments. Through home visits, an oral health intervention program, including oral hygiene care and training on strengthening of oral function, was conducted once a week for 5 months. Dental hygienists performed special oral health interventions such as dental plaque control through individual tooth brushing and interdental care, training on strengthening of intraoral and extraoral muscle function, and denture care for the individuals with visual-hearing impairments. Results: The overall periodontal health status and oral muscle function improved in older adults with hearing and visual impairments. In the case of the visually impaired individuals, changes in the oral health status were oral mucosal moisture (30.1 and 37.2 points before and after intervention, respectively), salivary secretion (3.5 and 4.0 cm before and after intervention, respectively), and maximum tongue pressure (20.5 and 26.2 kPa before and after intervention, respectively). Changes in the oral health status of the hearing impaired individuals increased from 28.3 points before the intervention to 38.4 points after the intervention, and the maximum tongue pressure increased from 1.85 kPa to 23.5 kPa after the intervention. Conclusions: Oral health intervention activities contributed to improving the periodontal health and oral function of older adults with hearing and visual impairments. To improve their overall and oral health, it is necessary to prepare measures to activate customized oral health intervention programs.

The SPSS 12.0 program was used for statistical analysis of the collected data, and the significance of difference by groups was tested by using chi-square test, the one-way ANOVA and independent t-test. The mean frequency of toothbrushing per day and the rate of toothbrushing before and after meal were analyzed by using of multiple comparisons through the Scheffe test as post hoc test. Results : The rate of toothbrushing after lunch was 60.2% in third year and 39.2% in first year dental hygiene students, 20.3% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. • Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the dental care utilization patterns and related factors of the rural residents. Methods: The data collected by interview and self-administered questionnaire survey of 524 peoples of Seongju county in Gyeongsanbuk-do. The summarized results are as follows. Results: The rate of persons who experienced the oral disease was 52.5% during 1 year and it was at most in the age group of 40-49. The rate of persons who had experienced the oral disease were investigated according to general characteristics, perception of oral health, being of regular treatment facility. Therefore the rate of persons who had experienced the oral disease was significantly higher the younger peoples, worse oral health status and being of the regular treatment source than the other groups. During 1 year period, 64.0% of the cases had treated the perceived oral disease, 36.0% did no action at all during last year. Among respondents, 49.4% had treated their oral disease at dental clinics, 8.0% had treated at community health center or subcenter and remains did not treated at all. The results of logistic regression analysis suggested that statistically significant factors in dental health care utilization were educational level, degree of pain, oral health status and regular treatment facility. Therefore the dental health care utilization rate was higher at groups with the high educational level, serious pain, better oral health status and being of the regular treatment source than other groups. 45.5% of the rural residents did not treat their oral disease immediately due to the no identified need, limitation of time(19.2%), economic limitation(19.2%), and geographical limitation(9.0%). Conclusions: In consideration of above findings, we may conclude that oral health community program to prevent oral diseases should be intensified, oral health education to raise oral health knowledge should be performed periodically.
