Designing a Project-based Service-Learning Course for Pre-dental Education: A Theoretical Exploration

  • This study is a theoretical exploration of project-based service-learning and its application in designing pre-dental curricula. As a response to the limitation of community service courses, service-learning has been implemented as pedagogy in higher education practices. Service-learning connects service and learning by engaging students in activities that address community needs with intentionally designed learning opportunities while adding value to and transforming both service and learning. Project-based service-learning is an extended and more active version of service-learning. Whereas service activities are arranged by instructors in the original service-learning, project-based service-learning provides students with opportunities for exploring problems and root causes on site and then devising and implementing solutions of their own using their talents and creativity. This study proposes a theoretical approach to project-based service-learning and suggests six design components, namely, related curriculum, reflection, reciprocity, service and community engagement, evaluation and recognition, and creative problem solving. Based on the components, 20 design strategies are formulated. The exploration is aimed to provide design guides for professionals attempting to implement project-based service-learning in higher education.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of teacher learning and changes in teachers' epistemic beliefs within a learning community of elementary science teachers. Three in-service elementary teachers who majored in elementary science education in a doctoral course of a graduate school of education participated in the study, and learning activities in the teachers' beginning learning community provided a context for the study. Data sources included field notes produced by the researcher who engaged jointly in the teacher learning community as a coach, audio-recordings of the teachers' narratives, and artifacts generated by the teachers during the process of teacher learning. Complementary analyses of these multiple sources of data revealed that epistemic beliefs of the three elementary teachers were different and that each teacher made a different plan of science instruction based on his own epistemic belief even after the learning experiences within the teacher community. It was therefore suggested that science teacher education programs should be organized in consideration of the nature of teachers as constructivist learners and their practical resources.

학습공동체 프로그램 참여가 대학생의 의사소통능력 및 협동학습역량에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Learning Community Program Participation on College Students' Communication Skills and Cooperative Learning Competency)

  • 본 연구는 학습공동체 프로그램 참여가 대학생의 의사소통능력 및 협동학습역량에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2018년 2학기에 A대학교 재학생 296명을 대상으로 사전·사후 설문조사를 실시하였고 SPSS를 사용하여 분석하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학습공동체 프로그램 참여가 대학생의 협동학습역량에 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 둘째, 하위요인별 분석에서는 협동학습역량의 학습참여, 학습만족도 요인에서 프로그램 전후 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 셋째, 학년별 차이를 살펴본 바, 2학년과 3학년에서 프로그램 전후 협동학습역량이 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 넷째, 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 학습공동체 프로그램 활동 및 후속 연구에 대한 시사점을 제안하였다. 본 연구는 대학에서 진행되는 학습공동체 활동이 대학생의 의사소통능력 및 협동학습역량에 미치는 영향을 분석하였고 학습공동체 활동의 체계적인 운영과 지원을 위한 실천적인 방안을 제시하였다.

사이버학습환경에서 학급공동체의식과 사회적 실재감이 학습만족도에 미치는 영향 (An influence of a Sense of Classroom Community and Social Presence on Learning Satisfaction in a Cyber Learning Setting)

  • 본 연구는 사이버학습환경에서 학급공동체의식과 사회적 실재감이 학습만족도에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 D광역시 M초등학교 6학년 사이버가정학습 학습자 172명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 데이터를 수집하였으며 학급공동체의식, 사회적 실재감과 학습만족도와의 관계를 알아보기 위해 중다회귀분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 학급공동체의식과 사회적 실재감, 학습만족도 간에는 의의 있는 상관관계가 나타났고, 학급공동체 의식이 학습만족도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 초등 사이버학습환경에서 학급공동체의식은 학습자의 학습만족도 향상을 위해 중요하게 고려해야 할 변인임을 시사한다. 이에 향후 사이버학습환경을 구성할 때 학급공동체의식을 높이기 위한 교수설계 전략이 요구된다.

지역사회 치위생관리과정에 기반한 지역사회치위생학 실습 학습목표 타당화 연구 (A study on the validation of learning goals of community dental hygiene practicum based on the community dental hygiene process of care)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to define the concept of the community dental hygiene process of care and to develop competency-based learning goals applying the community dental hygiene process of care. Methods: Based on 12 references, the concept of community dental hygiene process of care was defined, and 393 learning objectives were derived to carry out the first and second categorization process. The 57 learning goals were classified according to the 15-week learning subject (once a week) for project learning. To evaluate the validity of the developed learning subjects and goals, 80 community dental hygiene professors were surveyed. The final learning subjects and goals were created by going through the process of collecting opinions from the 35 validity evaluation results received as responses, and opinions from 10 community dental hygiene professors. Results: The first and second validity surveys on the operational definition of community dental hygiene process of care showed 4.32 points and 4.60 points, respectively. As a result of the evaluation of the validity of the learning subjects and goals for 1~15 weeks, the average validity of the learning subjects was 4.44 points, and of learning goals was 4.32 points. Conclusions: The learning subjects and goals developed by applying the theoretical framework for community dental hygiene process of care defined in this study can be used as a learning guideline for learners to understand the theory of community dental hygiene area and to derive the standards of competence in the field of practice.

Attitudes toward Mathematics and Mathematics Self-Efficacy on a Learning Community Model: A Case Study

  • This study investigates the change in two theoretical constructs, attitudes toward mathematics and mathematics self-efficacy, among college students involved in a learning community model. The case of this study was a developmental mathematics class offered at a historically black college located in the southeastern United States. Subjects included 31 students enrolled in an introductory mathematics course, some of whom participated in a learning community (treatment group). The participants completed mathematics attitudes and mathematics efficacy instruments twice: at the beginning of the semester and again at the end. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and a non-parametric statistic. The results showed that students' attitudes toward mathematics and mathematics self-efficacy are strongly correlated; the mathematical problem-solving efficacy changed significantly over time and it is significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group; and the treatment group produced better outcomes. These findings indicate that a learning community model can increase students' mathematics self-efficacy beliefs. It is recommended that mathematics self-efficacy and attitudes toward mathematics be measured over an extended period of time when a learning community is implemented.

의학전문대학원생의 학습동아리 참여 경험에 대한 성찰 에세이 분석 (Analysis of Reflective Essays on the Learning Community Experiences of Medical Students)

  • This study analyzed participation experiences in a voluntarily learning community using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Sixty freshmen and sophomore medical school students in 10 learning communities participated in the study. At the time of the survey, learning communities had been operating for 10 weeks and had weekly in-person meetings. Satisfaction questionnaires and reflective essays were given and analyzed. The results showed that learning community experiences were effective in promoting students' learning motivation, cooperative learning, responsibility, and communication skills. Three essential topics and nine subjects were analyzed in the reflective essays. Three essential topics were conflict with each other due to the difference, forming deep relationships, and sharing and learning together with an in-depth study. The results of this study will contribute to collaborative learning culture and the development of learning communities in medical schools.

가정과 교육에서 지역사회 연계 체험학습의 적용 가능성 탐색 (Exploring the Possibility in Application of Community-Related Experiential Learning to Home Economics Education)

  • 이 연구는 이전 연구들을 중심으로 하여 가정교육에 있어서 지역사회 연계 체험학습과 관련된 기초적인 정보를 제공하고, 또한 인지적 관심을 향상시키는 것에 목적을 둔다. 가정교육 전문가들은 개인과 가족들과 관련된 지역사회의 요구를 인지하고 있음에도 불구하고, 가정과 교육과 관련된 지역사회 연계 체험학습에 관한 연구나 교수학습 방법에 대해서는 거의 언급하지 않았다. 이 연구는 다음과 같은 세 가지의 연구문제를 가지고 이전연구들을 분석하여 그 답을 얻고자 노력하였다. 첫째, 지역사회 연계 체험학습의 교육적 의미는 무엇인가? 둘째, 가정과 교육에서 지역사회 연계된 체험학습을 어떻게 개념화할 것인가? 세 번째, 지역사회 연계 체험학습을 가정과 교육에 어떻게 적용시킬 수 있을 것인가? 더불어 이 연구는 지역사회 연계 체험학습을 가정과 교육에 적용하기 위한 구체적인 전략들과 향후 가정교육 연구와 실천을 위한 제언들을 함께 제시하고 있다.

지역사회간호학에서의 문제중심학습 모듈 적용 (The Implementation of PBL Module in Community Health Nursing)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate adequate strategies of PBL in community health nursing for learning in the real community situation. Method: Data were collected in a PBL class of 14 third-year students who solved problems and assessed PBL in community health nursing related to visiting nursing and chronic diseases. Results: The students guessed situations diversely, chose learning issues widely and mapped the learning concepts specifically. In the assessment of the presentation, the peers of the same group gave the highest score $29.00{\pm}3.36$, the tutor lowest score $22.83{\pm}5.15$. In 5-point Likerts scale, the group dynamic was highest ($4.18{\pm}.61$) and the presentation was lowest ($3.59{\pm}.84$). Conclusion: The group needs to include students who have experiences in the practice at the health centers. The PBL class should be managed by the block system along with the conventional learning. Students needs to practice the self-directed learning and the presentation in a first semester and then PBL. The introduction of community health nursing begins with the conventional lecture and the programs on life circle and health centers through PBL in the comprehensive curriculums.

팀상호작용과 팀메타인지가 대학생 학습공동체 지속참여에 미치는 융복합적 영향 (A study about the convergent effects of team interaction and team metacognition affecting a continuous participation in learning community of university)

  • 이 연구는 대학 학습공동체에 참여한 대학생들의 팀상호작용과 팀메타인지가 학습공동체 활동의 지속참여 의향에 어떠한 융복합적 영향을 주는가를 분석하기 위한 것이다. 팀상호작용 19개 문항과 팀메타인지 17개 문항으로 된 측정도구로, A 대학교 학습공동체 프로그램에 참여한 15개 팀 113명의 대학생을 대상으로 실시하였다. 이항 로지스틱 회귀분석을 통하여 밝힌 연구 결과는 첫째, 학습공동체 지속참여 의향에 팀상호작용 수준과 팀메타인지 수준이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 팀상호작용 수준이 높을수록, 팀메타인지 수준이 낮을수록 지속참여할 가능성이 증가하였다. 둘째, 학습공동체 지속참여 의향에 영향을 주는 팀상호작용 요인 중, 학습 횟수가 많을수록, 팀원들이 학습을 위해 서로 격려할수록 지속참여 가능성이 증가하였고, 팀원들이 열심히 활동하지 않을수록, 학습에 몰입하지 않을수록, 학습 시간이 적을수록 지속참여 가능성이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학습공동체 지속참여 의향에 영향을 주는 팀메타인지 요인 중, 학습 횟수가 많을수록 참여 의향 가능성이 증가하고, 다양한 학습도구를 사용할수록, 평균 학습시간이 많을수록 참여 의향 가능성이 감소하였다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 대학생의 학습공동체 지속참여를 위한 융복합적 지원 방안은 다음과 같다. 팀상호작용을 촉진하기 위해 학습 횟수를 늘리고, 팀원간 상호 격려하도록 지원하여 긍정적인 학습공동체 경험을 유도하고, 팀메타인지 활동의 필요성과 유용성을 학생들이 충분히 인식하도록 효과적인 활용 방법을 지원할 필요가 있다.
