  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma is malignant neoplasm belonging to a group of tumors of salivary gland origin. It is an aggressive tumor characterized by slow growth and incidious destruction of surrounding tissues. Perineural invasion is a prominent feature. Spread to regional lymph node is rare, other than by direct extension. Distant metastasis are more common. We experienced a 65-year old female with adenoid cystic carcinoma of minor salivary gland in retromolar pad.

  • Myofibroma is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that in all ages usually occurs in the head and neck region, and at subcutaneous tissue, but rarely has bone origin within bone. Intraosseous lesions are more often found in childhood. Although intraosseous lesions are relatively common in mandible. Reports for mandible, reports on radiographic findings of myofibroma occurred on the mandible are uncommon. We describe the radiographic appearance on the conventional radiographs and CT of myofibroma of the mandible in a 9-year-old boy. This benign lesion closely resembles to odontogenic cyst or tumor on image.

  • Osteomas are benign osteoblastic tumors that occur mainly in the fronto-ethmoid areas ofthe head and neck region. When they occasionally occur in the temporal bone, the external auditory canal is the most common site of origin; they rarely occur in the mastoid region. Moreover, mastoid osteoma with mastoiditis is an extremely rare entity in the temporal bone. Recently, the authors experienced a case of mastoid osteoma with mastoiditis in the left temporal bone. The mastoid osteoma was completely resected itself without a mastoidectomy, only for correction of the cosmetic deformity; the mastoiditis was not treated. Hence, the authors report the first case of a mastoid osteoma with mastoiditis in Korea, along with a review of the related literature.

  • A total of 470 papers directly related to research on the Panax species were retrieved by performing internet searches with the keywords Panax and ginseng as the search terms. The publications were categorized as follows: 399 research articles, 30 reviews, 30 meeting abstracts, 7 proceedings, and 4 letters. The majority of these publications were published by scientists from Korea (35.7%), China (32.3%), and the USA (11.3%). Scientists from a total of 29 nations were actively involved in conducting ginseng research. A total of 43.6% of the publications were categorized as pharmacodynamic studies. The effects of ginseng on cerebrovascular function and cancer were the two most common topics considered in the pharmacodynamic studies. More than half of the ginseng studies assessed the use of P. ginseng. A total of 23 countries participated in studies specifically related to P. ginseng, and more than 80% of these studies originated from Korea and China. A total of 50 topics within the pharmacodynamics category were examined in association with the use of P. ginseng.

  • Malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFHs) is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma in the old animal with a aggressiveness, a high local recurrence rate and significant metastatic rate, which associated with a poor prognosis. In most histologic and immunohistological studies, the tumor cells raised from a fibroblastic and/or myofibroblastic phenotype, presumably from undifferentiated mesenchymal cell origin. MFHs are usually firm and invasive, arising in the subcutis; metastasis depends on tumor grade (many are grade 3) [1,2]. The primary tumor cells are pleomorphic, varying in appearance from fusiform to round. Often nucleoli are prominent and irregular [5]. Extracellular amorphous eosinophilic material may be prominent and likely represents reactive collagen production by the tumor [5]. (omitted)

  • During 22-year period ending in June 1988, operation was performed on 22 patients with primary heart tumor at Yonsei University College of Medicine. Mean age was 38.8*3.03[mean \ulcornerEM] ranging from 14 to 63 years old. Twenty cases were myxomas. Others were fibromyxoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. All patients complained of dyspnea on exertion. Nine cases had palpitation. Other constitutional symptoms were weight loss [7 cases], headache [4 cases], generalized edema [3 cases] and cough [3 cases]. Five cases had neurological symptoms and signs preoperatively. Preoperative NYHA Class was poor [Class II; 8 cases, III; 9 cases and IV; 5 cases]. The most common site of tumor origin was fossa ovalis limbus [16 cases; 72.8%]. Because of severe mitral regurgitation and of recurrent myxoma, 2 cases were reoperated for mitral valve replacement. Postoperative complications were postoperative mitral regurgitation [5 cases; 22.8%] and arrhythmia [4 cases; 18.2%], one of which was supra-His bundle block. All patient survived operation. Follow-up of 15 patients [mean 28.95*8.3 months] was good as functional class 1[8 cases] or II [7 cases]. More effective adjuvant therapy will be necessary to improve long-term prognosis for malignant primary heart tumor.

  • The benign tumor of smooth muscle, the leiomyoma, may arise anywhere in the body, in such tissues as the muscularis of the gut and the media of blood vessels, although by far its most common location is the uterus. Indeed, the mediastinal leiomyomas are extremely rare, especially when one excludes those arising in the esophagus. No dogmatic statements can be made with regard to age, sex distribution, symptoms, or clinical course because of the extreme paucity of cases available for evaluation. Although the majority of the reported cases are in the posterior mediastinum, thus suggesting esophageal origin. We have experienced a right inferior mediastinal leiomyoma in 36 years old housewife. She complained hemoptysis and right lower chest pain associated with intermittent low-graded fever and chillness. Routine X-ray film revealed a large irregular cystic mass density in the right lower thoracic cavity. On exploratory thoracotomy, a huge round yellow-gray colored solid mass, measured about 2.5kg in weight, was located in the right inferior mediastinum just above right hemidiaphragm, medially. The tumor mass was removed, being proved to be leiomyoma on histopathologic examination. Her postoperative course was uneventful and discharged without complication.

  • We present two rare cases of anomalous vertebral artery (VA) with retroesophaqeal right subclavian artery. One patient had a right VA arising from the right common carotid artery (CCA), and a left VA originating from the third branch off the aorta. Both VAs ascended anteriorly to the transverse foramen of C5 to C6 vertebra and entered the transverse foramen of C4. The other patient had a right VA arising from the right CCA and entering the transverse foramen of C5. The presence of anomalous variations of the oriqin and course of vertebral artery might have serious implications in anqioqraphic and surgical procedures, and it is of great importance to be aware of such a possibility.

  • Hypoptychus dybowskii, the Korean sandlance, is widespread in cold areas of the North Pacific. Although H. dybowskii has been considered to occur on the coast of Hamgyeongnam-do in Korea, the species is also distributed along the coast of Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, south of Hamgyeongnam-do in the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula on the basis of newly collected specimens. In addition, many Koreans confuse H. dybowskii and Ammodytes japonicus (= A. personatus for Korean specimens) because the Korean common name or dialect of both species is "Yang-mi-ri", yet the two species differ in their external morphology. Hypoptychus dybowskii differs from A. japonicus in the location of the origin of the dorsal fin and the number of dorsal and anal fin rays.

  • Pyrenophora graminea, the causal agent of leaf stripe disease, is an economically important pathogen of barley found worldwide. Forty-four isolates of diverse geographical origin within Syria were grouped into vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) by demonstrating heterokaryosis by complementation tests using nitrate nonutilizing (nit) mutants. All isolates were grouped into three VCGs-1-A, 1-B and 1-C. No self-incompatibility was observed in any of the isolates tested. VCG 1-A was the most common group within growing regions in Syria and proved to be the most virulent of the VCGs identified. These data indicate that the level of virulence in P. graminea is related to VCG.
