Analyzing Box-Office Hit Factors Using Big Data: Focusing on Korean Films for the Last 5 Years

  • Korea has the tenth largest film industry in the world; however, detailed analyses using the factors contributing to successful film commercialization have not been approached. Using big data, this paper analyzed both internal and external factors (including genre, release date, rating, and number of screenings) that contributed to the commercial success of Korea's top 10 ranking films in 2011-2015. The authors developed a WebCrawler to collect text data about each movie, implemented a Hadoop system for data storage, and classified the data using Map Reduce method. The results showed that the characteristic of "release date," followed closely by "rating" and "genre" were the most influential factors of success in the Korean film industry. The analysis in this study is considered groundwork for the development of software that can predict box-office performance.

  • This article is to investigate the possibility that project-based classes introducing mobile phones can replace the monotony of traditional classes led by teachers as well as they can encourage students to take active part in the classes to some extent. The students in groups choose a genre for their own video projects (e.g., movie, drama, news, documentary, and commercial) and produce the video contents using a mobile phone for presentation made at the end of a semester. In the sense that the students are allowed to do video-based mobile phone projects, they can work independently outside of class, where time and space are more flexible and students are free from the anxiety of speaking or acting in front of an audience. A mobile phone project consists of around five stages done both in and outside of the classroom. All of these stages can be graded independently, including genre selection, drafting of scripts, peer review and revision, rehearsals, and presentation of the video. Feedback is given to students. After the presentation, students filled out a survey questionnaire sheet devised to analyze students' responses toward preferences and level of difficulty of the project activity. Finally, proposals are made for introduction of a better mobile phone-based project classes.

UCC Contents Production System Using Direct Show (Direct Show 기반 UCC 컨텐츠 제작 시스템)

  • Recently, it has developed that UCC (User Created Contents) is made and created by the users. The mainly issue of production of contents parts is how can make easier and paly the moving picture more useful. In this paper, for this, we implemented UCC production system using Direct Show which is included Direct X. Direct Show is a moving picture editing technique and has been supported in Microsoft with COM component. Our system has features that the various effects can be easily inserted into moving Picture by users. Moreover, our system can efficiently apply the effects at playing the moving picture differently from the frame processing method. We confirmed these merits through experiments. The proposed system can be used for commercial purposes which high efficiency is required such as advertisement movie.

  • While the broadband multimedia technologies have been developing, the commercial market of digital contents has also been widely spreading. Most of all, digital cartoon market like internet cartoon has been rapidly large so video cartooning continuously has been researched because of lack and variety of cartoon. Until now, video cartooning system has been focused in non-photorealistic rendering and word balloon. But the meaningful frame extraction must take priority for cartooning system when applying in service. In this paper, we propose new automatic frame extraction method for video cartooning system. At frist, we separate video and audio from movie and extract features parameter like MFCC and ZCR from audio data. Audio signal is classified to speech, music and speech+music comparing with already trained audio data using GMM distributor. So we can set speech area. In the video case, we extract frame using general scene change detection method like histogram method and extract meaningful frames in the cartoon using face detection among the already extracted frames. After that, first of all existent face within speech area image transition frame extract automatically. Suitable frame about movie cartooning automatically extract that extraction image transition frame at continuable period of time domain.

  • The Soviet Silent Films in the 1920s, produced a brilliant prosperity in the history of world films in the cultural and artistic aspects. Among them, Dziga Vertov was a film theorists and a practitioner along with Sergei M. Einstein played a pivotal role in the contemporary soviet films at the time. But the film theories of Vetro is incorrectly recognized or specialized compared to the theories of Eisenstein. But Deleuze has stated that the short in the movie of Vertov is able to deliver a meaning and an impact and he has emphasized that a short can be significant by itself by focusing on the 'truth' which a documentary must have. His film theories are based on futurism and constructivism and use the 'kino-eye' method and 'Interval' theory to summarize and organize his movies into 'movie-truth' principal and 'life as itself' concept. Deleuze the purpose of this research is to analyze with the Vertov core of film theory and every theory of kino eye as the foundation and by comparing the Montage Theory of Sergei Eisenstein and applying Deleuze's Image Theory. Furthermore, it can be insufficient to discuss the film commercial achievements of Vertov as a result of inadequacy of previous research but it will further study his innovative methods and depth of his theories in his representation form in the documentary films.

Performance Analysis of Directors, Producers, Main Actors in Korean Movie Industry using Deciles Distribution (2004-2017) (평균 관객 수 10분위를 활용한 감독, 제작자, 배우 흥행성과 분석)

  • On the 855 pure Korean commercial fictional movies, excluding diversity films, released in Korea from 2004 to August 2017, I conducted deciles distribution analysis of box office performance of those movies and average box office performance of directors, producers and lead actors who involved in making them. Deciles distribution analysis of average box office performance might be helpful to predict their next box office performance of newly produced Korean movies and to evaluate their contribution to box office performance. In baseball, the various index such as winning rate, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, stolen base percentage, battling average, earned run average is used for predicting and reviewing of professional players. In this study, I evaluate the script's narrative quality by the indirect method of insight and judgment of creative manpower involved in making the movies. For the more productive prediction, direct statistical analysis method on the narrative of the script needs to develop. Time series analysis is required to evaluate the rise and fall of creative manpower and network analysis is also necessary to see the interaction among creative people.

Analysis of Chinese Game Cosplay Photography - Focused on 'Qiwei Zoe' - (중국 게임 코스프레(cosplay) 사진 연구 - '칠미조(七味zoe)'를 중심으로-)

  • Costume play is an act of imitating the appearance or behavior of characters in digital games, cartoons or animations. In recent years, cosplay culture has become popular in China as the digital game is made into a movie. The number of cosers has also increased. Especially, Qiwei Zoe has been very popular among cosers because her cosplay photography reflects the understanding of the cosplay culture. A number of cosers admit that her work shows a commercial and artistic potential of cosplay photography. This paper analyzed how she maintains the contents of the original but creatively reimplementing them. She shoots the fantastic image of the character like it really exists in reality so that she can avoid excessive editing work. She emphasizes the character's action that symbolizes its personality and utilizes a variety of outdoor shooting locations similar to the original scenes. We also discussed how cosplay photographers can create cosplay photography by maintaining its artistic features.

Using Genre Rating Information for Similarity Estimation in Collaborative Filtering

  • Similarity computation is very crucial to performance of memory-based collaborative filtering systems. These systems make use of user ratings to recommend products to customers in online commercial sites. For better recommendation, most similar users to the active user need to be selected for their references. There have been numerous similarity measures developed in literature, most of which suffer from data sparsity or cold start problems. This paper intends to extract preference information as much as possible from user ratings to compute more reliable similarity even in a sparse data condition, as compared to previous similarity measures. We propose a new similarity measure which relies not only on user ratings but also on movie genre information provided by the dataset. Performance experiments of the proposed measure and previous relevant measures are conducted to investigate their performance. As a result, it is found that the proposed measure yields better or comparable achievements in terms of major performance metrics.

  • Game industry has been grown up with invigorating online game since 1990s and increased in the spending side by focusing on commercial business. Game, however, has displayed a role that can producing cyber culture with Machinima that is a kind of movie made by a game engine. It should be discussed that non-linear activity of game is disclosed being closely connected with the environment of online space. Accordingly, there are three ways for this study. The first, characteristics of game environment taken non-linear effect related to hypertext space is researched. The second, Machinima is discussed as expansion of hypertext literature. And the last, considering game as consumption of just playing, game is able to become the subject role that can create virtual culture with making a variety of Machinima. consequently, through dichotomy and a liner form between consumption and production in hypertext space leaded to non-liner situation, positive and active features of game that has taken the activity of virtual reality into the multimedia literature would be delivered.
