When the reactor vessel is penetrated in a severe accident of light water reactor, the molten fuel-coolant interaction including the jet breakup occurs and the jet breakup length becomes one of the important parameters. Most numerical studies on jet breakup process have been carried out using dedicated computer codes. Some researchers are trying to apply commercial CFD codes to their investigations on comprehensive jet breakup process. However, the complexity of the phenomena limits the CFD application only to hydrodynamic aspects. In the present study, numerical analysis of jet breakup under vapor generation is pursued using the STAR-CCM + code. The obtained CFD prediction of the MATE09 experiment shows jet breakup progression patterns consistent to the images taken in the experiment. Further, the predicted positions of leading head, which determine the jet breakup length, are in good agreement with the MATE 09 data. The investigation of hydrodynamic effects on the jet breakup with higher jet velocity results in a stronger shear force and earlier jet breakup process even though there exists the vapor pocket around the corium jet. In future studies, the effect of vapor intensity on the jet breakup length would be investigated further by changing other parameters.
High-power pulsed laser ablation under atmospheric pressure is studied utilizing numerical and experimental methods with emphasis on recondensation ratio, and the dynamics of the laser induced vapor flow. In the numerical calculation, the temperature pressure, density and vaporization flux on a solid substrate are first obtained by a heat-transfer computation code based on the enthalpy method, and then the plume dynamics is calculated by using a commercial CFD package. To confirm the computation results, the probe beam deflection technique was utilized for measuring the propagation of a laser induced shock wave. Discontinuities of properties and velocity over the Knudsen layer were investigated. Related with the analysis of the jump condition, the effect of the recondesation ratio on the plume dynamics was examined by comparing the pressure, density, and mass fraction of ablated aluminum vapor. To consider the effect of mass transfer between the ablation plume and air, unlike the most previous investigations, the equation of species conservation is simultaneously solved with the Euler equations. Therefore the numerical model computes not only the propagation of the shock front but also the distribution of the aluminum vapor. To our knowledge, this is the first work that employed a commercial CFD code in the calculation of pulsed ablation phenomena.
The objective of this study is to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of a Horizontal-axis wind turbines(HAWT), using CFD method with a commercial code STAR-CCM+ version 3.06. To verify the reliability of the computations, the CFD results are compared with the experimental ones of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) Phase Ⅵ HAWT. For the comparison and examination of aerodynamic characteristics, the existent shape with a predesigned twist angle was replaced by the one with one-dimensional linear twist angle. In this study, the pressure contour and stream line around the blade were analyzed as main focus. Through this study the more efficient shape of airfoil is suggested with consideration of manufacturing cost.
Post swirl stator is an energy saving device to recover rotational energy of the propeller. To optimize the performance of post swirl stator in container vessels, computational fluid dynamics using body force method was introduced. A commercial code Fluent was used in conjunction with body force distributed on the surface of actuator disk which is located in the propeller plane to optimize pitch angle of the post swirl stator blade. This study showed that CFD is an important tool to simulate flow behind ship with propeller, rudder and post swirl stator.
In order to suggest the methodology for achieving anti-vortex within multi pump intake well, the field test and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were conducted. The filed test were carried out for domestic W_multi pump intake well according to usual operation condition through the naked observation. From the results, operating #4, #5, #8 and 9# pumps, the vortex and swirl occurred above #4 and #9 intake pipe within two wells. For qualitative analysis, a commercial CFD code, using sump model, was used to predict the vortex generation within the selected pump intake facility accurately. The analysed results by CFD show that the vortex structure and location are in accordance with the results of the field test.
Recently, various developments in the area of small hydropower have being made and small hydro turbines are suitable for domestic use because it is a clean and renewable energy source. A small hydropower generator produces power by using the different water pressure levels in pipe lines and energy which was initially wasted by use of a reducing valve at the end of the pipeline is instead collected by a tubular-type hydro turbine in the generator. In this study, in order to acquire the performance of tubular-type hydro turbine applied, the output power, head, efficiency characteristics due to the different guide vane and runner vane angle are examined in detail. Moreover, influences of pressure and velocity distributions with the variation of guide vane and runner vane angle on turbine performance are investigated by using a commercial CFD code.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a primary air pollutant as an indicator of air quality released from motor vehicle combustion. A comparative study of the distributions of CO concentration with no heat source in two tunnel models open and closed at both end sides is simulated with a commercial CFD code. The tunnel models are used to investigate the CO concentration distributions at three Reynolds numbers, which are computed by the inlet velocities of 0.3, 0.6 and 1.0 m/s. For a better tunnel design, the CFD predictive approaches are available in qualitatively studying the distributions of CO concentration. In the case of the tunnel open at both end sides in sixty seconds, the total CO concentrations are approximately twenty eight percent higher than those in the closed case.
A commercial CFD code is used to calculate the 3-D viscous flow field within the centrifugal pump impeller. Design conditions are changed by impeller inlet(9.3mm, 12.2mm) and outlet breadth(6.65mm, 6.85mm). Numerical calculation was performed by changing flow rate from 8 to 26m$^{3}$/hr. Computation results shows that total head is increased at the larger inlet and outlet breadth than the others. And when the flow rate is increasing, the total head was decreased. The maximum efficiency of pump is shown at the design flow rate(16m$^{3}$/hr). In this study shows that the calculated results are good agreements with analysis results of design condition.
Stirred tanks are widely used in various industries for mixing operations and chemical reactions for single- or multi-phase fluid systems. In this study, a numerical study was conducted to predict the mixing characteristics in a simple stirred tank. The flow in the model stirred tank was calculated utilizing the multiple reference frame (MRF) and the sliding mesh (SM) capabilities of a commercial CFD code (Fluent 6.2). The results of the flow simulation were analyzed in terms of the mixing efficiency, and the applicability of MRF and SM methods was also discussed.
Vortex and swirl occurring in a pump suction intake sump normally reduce the performance and disturb the safe operation of the circulation water pump in thermal power plants. This paper presents a case study of one particular intake sump design via a CFD analysis and a hydraulic model testing. The physical experiments and numerical analysis were performed under two flow and three level variation conditions. The vortex patterns around the pump suction pipe have been predicted by a commercial CFD code with the k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The model tests were conducted on a 1/10 model for a practical intake sump. The location, number and general pattern of the free surface vortex and submerged vortex predicted by CFD simulation were found to be a good agreement with those observed in the model testing.
