  • Digital control system for active combustion control of lab-scale combustor equipped with secondary fuel injection is designed. Controllability with adaptive law is revealed with the Cambridge Combustor model and the requirement for control system is derived. The input and output requirements of frequency estimator and fuel supply actuator for the adaptive control law is verified with cold tests. The system can be used as digital based active combustion controller having 150Hz combustion instability.

  • To optimize the combustion system in a HSDI diesel engine, a new analysis technology was developed. The in-cylinder 3-D combustion analysis was carried out by the modified KIVA-3V, and the spray characteristics for the high pressure injection system were analyzed by HYDSIM. The combustion design parameters were optimized by coupling the KIVA-3V and the iSIGHT. The optimization procedure consists of 3 steps. The $1^{st}$ step is the sampling method by the Design of Experiment(DOE), the $2^{nd}$ step is the approximation using the Neural Network method, and the $3^{rd}$ step is the optimization using the Genetic Algorithm. The developed procedures have been approved as very effective and reliable, and the computational results agree well with the experimental data. The analysis results show that the optimized combustion system in a HSDI diesel engine is capable of reducing NOx and Soot emissions simultaneously keeping a same level of the fuel consumption(BSFC).

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the parametric characteristics on regenerative system with oxy-fuel combustion by experiment. Regenerative system with a pair of oxygen burners and regenerators is used for evaluating regenerator characteristics according to design parameters such as ball (regenerator medium) size, regenerator weight, and bypass of exhaust gas. The temperature profiles with time are varied by ball size and regenerator weight. The bypass of exhaust gas shows that the heat recovery ratio increases while the regenerating temperature efficiency slightly decreases.

  • The present study systematically investigates the effect of evaporation rate on the combustion characteristics and the flame stabilization in a gasoline engine. A constant volume combustion chamber was used to elucidate a basic combustion characteristics and the premixer was installed to control temperature and equivalence ratio. And the maximum pressure, combustion duration and flame propagation according to the evaporation rate were measured to determine the optimal temperature range for evaparating a gasoline fuel. These experimental results indicate that the combustion characteristics such as combustion chamber pressure and combustion duration were deteriorated by decreasing surrounding temperature of fuel injected. It was also found that the overall gasification process for gasoline fuel was strongly influenced by a combustion chamber temperature rather than a premixer temperature.

  • Combustion-driven oscillations in a surface burner have been investigated to clarify their characteristics. A model combustor is made and the oscillation frequencies are measured for various dimensions of the combustor. It is found that there are two modes of oscillations; one is the 'acoustic mode' at high frequencies, associated with the acoustic mode of the combustion system and the other is the 'combustion mode' at low frequencies around 100 Hz, associated with the instability of the flame. Acoustic mode is excited when the surface burner is placed where the phase of particle velocity leads that of acoustic pressure by $90^{\circ}$, for all the combustion conditions. Combustion mode is driven at high combustion rate by the lift of unstable flame near the lower limit of the combustible equivalence ratio. Combustion mode is greatly influenced by the inlet temperature of the premixed gas. When the inlet temperature is very high, the combustion mode does not occur.

  • The influences of number of spark plug on ignitability, combustion characteristics and combustion promotion effect were examined to establish the design conception of spark ignition system for lean burn. Ignitability was increased remarkably by increasing of number of spark plug at combustion wall. Combustion duration was shortened and maximum combustion pressure was increased in accordance with increasing of spark plug number. Rate of overall combustion promotion considered of combustion duration and combustion pressure was 28% in two point ignition and 40% in four point ignition. It was verified that heat release, heat loss and combustion duration were affected by flame area, heat transfer area and maximum flame travel distance respectively.

  • A novel oxy-fuel burner for a boiler has been devised and composed into a 50 kW class boiler system. A series of test has been conducted to show the characteristics of combustion, exhaust gas and the boiler. Numerical simulations have been also performed and validated against the experimental data to discuss detailed physics. The oxy-fuel burner can effectively heat the combustion chamber with the significantly reduced combustion gas, which enables to realize the compactness of the system. The composition of exhaust gas reveals that the sealing of the system is crucial to achieve high $CO_2$ concentration and low $NO_X$ emission.

  • The availability of the thermal energy has been deeply recognized recently to encourage the cascade usage of thermal energy from combustion. Within the frame work, a 1 kW class Stirling engine based cogeneration system has been proposed for a unit of a distributed energy system. The capacity has been designed to be adequate for the domestic usage, which requires high compactness as well as low emission and noised. To develop a highly efficient system with satisfying these requirements, a premixed slot flame burner has been proposed and a series of numerical simulation has been performed to establish a design tool for the combustion chamber. The thermal radiation model has been found to highly affect the computational results and a proper resolution to analyze the heat transfer characteristics of the high temperature heat exchanger. Finally, the combustion characteristics of the premixed flame with the metal fiber type burner has been studied.

  • Macroscopic combustion models used in gun interior ballistic codes are discussed and experimental methods to measure propellant burning rate are reviewed. Comparing with gun firing results, the limit of combustion model is shown and modified combustion model is proposed. But combustion model should be selected with respect to total gun system including propellants.
