Fossil power plants firing lower grade coals or equipped with modified system for NOx controls are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. In order to develop a on-line combustion tuning system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' $O_2$, NOx and CO was monitored by using a spatially distributed monitoring grid located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule and upper convective back-pass region. At these locations, the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. using these monitored information we can improving combustion at every point within the furnace, therefore the boiler can operate at reduced excess $O_2$ and gas temperature deviation, reduced furnace exit gas temperature levels while also reducing localized hot spots, corrosive gas conditions, slag or clinker formation and UBC. Benefits include improving efficiency, reducing NOx emissions, increasing output and maximizing availability. Discussion concerning the reduction of greenhouse gases is prevalent in the world. When taking a practical approach to addressing this problem, the best way and short-term solution to reduce greenhouse gases on coal-fired power plants is to improve efficiency. From this point of view the real time optimized combustion tuning approach is the most effective and implemented with minimal cost.

Anode off-gas of high temperature fuel cells such as MCFC still contain combustible components such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon. Thus, it's very important to fully burn anode off-gas and use the generated heat in order to increase system efficiency. In the present study, catalytic combustors have been applied to high temperature MCFC system so that the combustion of anode-off gas can be boosted up. Since the performance of catalytic combustor directly depends on the combustion catalyst, this study has been focused on the experimental investigation on the combustion characteristics of multiple commercial catalysts having different structures and compositions. In order to determine the design conditions of the catalytic combustor, parameters such as inlet temperature, space velocity and excess air ratio have been varied and optimized for combustor design. Results show that $H_2$ in off-gas assists $CH_4$ combustion in a way that it decreases minimum inlet temperature limit and increases maximum space velocity while keeping high fuel conversion efficiency.
This paper presents a method for estimating the noise source contribution of a pulse combustion burner in a multiple input system where the input sources may be coherent each other. By coherence function method, it is found that the biggest part of the noise source in the pulse combustion burner is generated by the part of the combustion chamber. This analysis is modeled as three input / single output system because the noise generating mechanism of the pulse combustion burner is very complicated. The coherence function method is proved to be useful tool for the identification of noise source. The overall levels of the radiated source pressure by coherence function method are compared with those measured and calculated by the frequency response function approach. The experimental results have shown a good agreement with the results calculated by the coherence function method when the input sources are coherent strongly each other. The estimation of shield effect by FRF method indicates that significant reduction can be achieved in sound radiation if only transmission path generated by the part of combustion chamber is acoustically shield.
A cycle simulation method is developed by coupling a commercial code, Ricardo's WAVE, with the SENKIN code from CHEMKIN packages to predict combustion characteristics of an HCCI engine. By solving detailed chemical kinetics the SENKIN code calculates the combustion products in the combustion chamber during the valve closing period, i.e. from IVC to EVO. Except the combustion chamber during the valve closing period the WAVE code solves thermodynamic status in the whole engine system. The cycle simulation of the complete engine system is made possible by exchanging the numerical solutions between the codes on the coupling positions of the intake port at IVC and of the exhaust port at EVO. This method is validated against the available experimental data from recent literatures. Auto ignition timing and cylinder pressure are well predicted for various engine operating conditions including a very high ECR rate although it shows a trend of sharp increase in cylinder pressure immediate after auto ignition. This trend is overpredicted especially for EGR cases, which may be due to the assumption of single-zone combustion model and the limit of the chemical kinetic model for the prediction of turbulent air-fuel mixing phenomena. A further work would be needed for the implementation of a multi-zone combustion model and the effect of turbulent mixing into the method.
Oxy-coal combustion for $CO_2$ capture in coal power plants entails a mode switching from air-firing to oxyfiring. In this study, procedure of the mode switching was investigated and discussed through experiments in pilot scale facilities: (1) a 0.3 $MW_{th}$ furnace with a vertical single burner and a FGR(Flue Gas Recirculation) system (2) a 1 $MW_{th}$ furnace with horizontal 4 burners and a FGR system. Principle of the mode switching was established and performed with control of FD fan, FGR fan, ID fan and oxygen flow rates. We have found that equivalence ratio in the oxy-firing mode should be increased more than that in the air-firing to achieve stable mode switching. Control of FD, ID and FGR fans should be performed carefully in the mode switching, in the sense of complete combustion and flame attachment. Moisture contents in the ash and the flue gas recycled to the primary oxidizer stream should be removed to prevent condensation, corrosion and duct clogging.
The wood pellet, which is one of the woody biomass energy, has very high economic efficiency and combustion efficiency during their combustion. The existing pellet burner have many problems such as low combustion efficiency, flame stabilization, ash problem and ignition time etc. We developed cyclonic wood pellet burner aim to 20,000kcal/hr boiler and measured temperature profiles and exhaust gases in order to investigate the flame stability and optimum combustion condition at any air flow conditions. As results, we confirmed the reappearance and the isotropy of the experimental results in the burner. At the first air flow inlet condition of excess air ratio ${\alpha}=0.02$, second air flow $490{\ell}/min$ had the best combustion condition when pellet supplied 30g. This result means that we need much air supply only for the swirling of second air flow. So we tested various second air flux at first air excess air ratio ${\alpha}=0.7$ condition. At this condition, we could find out that we don't need much second air and total air flux compared to the former condition. We will continuously test this work of air flow distribution, and swirl effect of first air flow, and ash elimination.
To effectively meet current regulations on the exhaust emissions of diesel engine required to control the deterioration of air pollution in the whole world, this study is to investigate the effects of water induction through the air intake system on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in IDI diesel engine. A method fur supplying water through the air intake system to reduce the exhaust emissions has been considered with other methods such as water introduction in the form of water-in-fuel emulsion or water injection directly into the combustion chamber, but it has not been studied about the effects of water on the combustion concepts and the characteristics of exhaust emissions in detail until now. In this study, the formation of NOx was significantly suppressed by decreasing the gas peak temperature during the initial combustion process because the water play a role as a heat sink during evaporating in the combustion chamber, but the smoke was slightly increased by increasing water amount.
The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.
Combustion chamber systems using spray impinged on walls have been studied for improving combustion characteristics in high speed direct injection diesel engines. The fuel spray injected in a small combustion chamber may be easily impinged and deposited on the wall. The fuel deposit has been considered as the cause for unburned emission due to difficulty of fuel-air mixing. In this paper w-shaped combustion chamber which has four raised pips on the side wall is introduced and discussed by comparing with conventional chamber with no pips. The computer code employing new spray-wall interaction model in general non-orthogonal grids is used in here. The model is applied into the new chamber shape with raised pips. In this chamber system four-hole nozzle is used, and the sprays injected from the each hole impact on lands raised from the chamber wall surface. After impacting, the sprays break up into much smaller drops and distribute over all the chamber space, instead of distributing just near the wall surface in conventional omega-shape. The results showed the potential of the w-shaped chamber employing pips for dispersing droplets so as tn avoid the fuel deposit regions.
