THC(Total Hydrocarbon) emissions during cold start and warm-up phase constitute the majority of THC emissions during the FTP-75 mode. As the basic approach to improve the emission performance of Gasoline engine during transient phase, the effect of spark timing retard from MBT on THC emission characteristics is studied by engine test using a Fast response Flame Ionization Detector(FFID). A cyclic analysis of the combustion process shows that high THC emissions are produced first few cycles during the transient phase. This paper presents the results of engine performance and emission of Gasoline engine with various spark timing. consequently, This paper was focused on the combustion phenomena with various spark timing during transient phase which was analyzed by Fast response Flame Ionization Detector (FFID) equipment to measure the cyclic THC emission characteristics.

Phase change in combustion of energetic materials happens inevitably. The product gas generated by combustion is at extreme temperature and pressure state. The interaction between a gas and metal generates high strain rate deformation and complex wave phenomena. In order to perform combustion simulation containing phase changes, we develop an elegant model for phase change and provide a proof of performance via vapor explosion example.

Combustion instabilities are an important concern associated with lean premixed combustion. Laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understand the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and sound level meter was used to track the pressure fluctuations inside the combustor. Instability maps and phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were obtained at several conditions to investigate the mechanism of combustion instability and relations between pressure wave and heat release rate. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (>0.6) as the mean velocity was decreased. Instabilities exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8 Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instabilities occurred. Rayleigh index distribution gave a hint about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. These results also give an insight to the control scheme of combustion instabilities. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only equivalence ratio but also combustion instability.
Diode laser sensor is conducted to measure the gas temperature in the liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame. C$\_$10/H/ sub 22/ and city gas were used as liquid fuel and gas fuel, respectively. Two vibrational overtones of H$_2$O were selected and measurements were carried out in the spray flame region stabilized the above gaseous premixed flame. The path-averaged temperature measurement using diode laser absorption method succeeded in the liquid fuel combustion environment regardless of droplets of wide range diameter. The path-averaged temperature measured in the post flame of liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame showed qualitative reliable results. The successful demonstration of time series temperature measurement in the liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame gave us motivation of trying to establish the effective control system in practical combustion system. These results demonstrated the ability of real-time feedback from combustor inside using the non-intrusive measurement as well as the possibility of application to practical combustion system. Failure case due to influence of spray flame was also discussed.
In this study we propose an unsteady I-dimensional model of bed combustion with multiple solid phases, which confers a phase on each solid material. This model can be applied to a variety of bed combustion cases of various configurations and ignition methods. It contains fuel combustion, gaseous reaction, heat transfers between each phase, and geometric changes of the solid particles. An iron ore sintering pot is selected for verifying the model validity and simulation results are compared with the limited experimental data set of various coke contents and air supply rates. They predict the experimental results well and show applicabilities to the various system of the fuel bed with various solid materials.

Recently, several LPG engines for heavy-duty vehicles have been developed, which can replace some diesel engines that are one of a main source for air pollution in urban area. As a preliminary study on the liquid phase LPG injection (hereafter LPLI) system applicable to a heavy duty LPG engine, the engine output and combustion performance were investigated with various combustion chambers and fuel compositions using a single cylinder engine equipped. Experimental results revealed that ellipse, double ellipse and nebula type combustion chamber made a more advantage in breaking swirl flow into small turbulence scale than bathtub type. Especially, performance of nebula type showed most highest efficiency and engine output under lean mixture conditions. An investigation fur various LPG fuel compositions was also carried out, and revealed that the case with 40% propane and 60% butane shows the lowest efficiency at stoichiometry, however, as the mixture became leaner its efficiency increased and became even higher for 100% propane case.

The intake swirl motion, as one of dominant effects for an engine combustion. is very effective for turbulence enhancement during the compression process in the cylinder of 2-valve engine. Because the combustion flame speed is determined by the turbulence that is mainly generated from the mean flow of the charge air motion in intake port system. This paper describes the experimental results of swirl flow and combustion characteristics by using the oil spot method and back-scattering Laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in 2-valve single cylinder transparent LPG engine using the liquid phase LPG injection. For this. various intake port configurations were developed by using the flow box system and swirl ratios for different intake port configurations were determined by impulse swirl meter in a steady flow rig test. And the effects of intake swirl ratio on combustion characteristics in an LPG engine were analyzed with some analysis parameters that is swirl ratio. mean flow coefficient, swirl mean velocity fuel conversion efficiency. combustion duration and cyclic variations of indicated mean effective pressure(IMEP). As these research results, we found that the intake port configuration with swirl ratio of 2.0 that has a reasonable lean combustion stability is very suitable to an $11{\ell}$ heavy-duty LPG engine with liquid phase fuel injection system. It also has a better mean flow coefficient of 0.34 to develope a stable flame kernel and to produce high performance. This research expects to clarify major factor that effects on the design of intake port efficiently with the optimized swirl ratio for the heavy duty LPG engine.

The purpose of this paper is to study combustion characteristics with the different phase of oxidizer in hybrid rocket combustion. HDPE(High Density Polyethylene) as fuel and $GN_2O$(Gas $N_2O$), $LN_2O$(Liquid $N_2O$) as oxidizer were used to perform the experiments. An investigation was performed for a change of the regression rate, pressure of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency according to the variation of oxidizer phase. In case of using $LN_2O$ as oxidizer, the regression rate is not significantly different from using $GN_2O$ as oxidizer. It is considered that combustion energy is much larger than latent heat energy which was used in the evaporation of liquid oxidizer. However propulsion performance efficiency for $LN_2O$ showed lower value than for $GN_2O$. By increasing the flow rate of liquid oxidizer, heat transfer needed for vaporization of liquid oxidizer was increased, which resulted in the growth of combustion instability.

In order to examine the effect of initial spray condition on the spray combustion mode and flame characteristics, theoretical analysis was carried out to predict combustion mode and flame structure for various initial distribution of droplets in spray. A system of conservation equations of spray flame in two dimensional axisymmetric for two phase flow was solved by a discrete element method for n-Butylbenzen (C$_{10}$$H_{14}$). As a results of present study, there are two principal group combustion modes that may occur independently for various initial group combustion numbers in a spray burner. These group combustion modes are termed as an external and internal group combustion mode. The critical group combustion number between the internal and external group combustion mode and the flame characteristics of those flame are also predicted. These results may be used as a basic data in the designing of new combustors as well as proper operating conditions for spray burners.s.
Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. The objective of this study is to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. CARS temperature measurements were made at several spatial locations under lean premixed conditions to get the information on temperature field within the combustor. Also the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature fluctuation was investigated. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. Temperature PDFs give an insight on the flame behavior. And strong correlation between phase-resolved temperature profile and pressure cycle was observed. Results of the phase-resolved high temperature give an additional information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio at flame as well as the effect of mixing quality on NOx emission characteristics.
