Preparation of melamine-grafted graphene oxide and evaluation of its efficacy as a flame retardant additive for polypropylene

  • The present study aimed to prepare a novel efficient flame retardant additive for polypropylene. The new flame retardant was prepared by chemical grafting of melamine to graphene oxide with the aid of thionyl chloride. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis proved that melamine had been successfully grafted to the graphene oxide. The modified graphene oxide was incorporated into polypropylene via solution mixing followed by anti-solvent precipitatio. Homogeneous distribution as well as exfoliation of the nanoplatelets in the polymer matrix was observed using transmission electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a significant improvement in the thermo-oxidative stability of the polymer after incorporating 2 wt% of the modified graphene oxide. The modified graphene oxide also enhanced the limiting oxygen index of the polymer. However, the amount of improvement was not enough for the polymer to be ranked as a self-extinguishing material. Cone calorimetry showed that incorporating 2 wt% of the modified graphene oxide lowered total heat release and the average production rate of carbon monoxide during burning of the polymer by as much as 40 and 35%, respectively. Hence, it was concluded that the new flame retardant can retard burning of the polymer efficiently and profoundly reduce suffocation risk of exposure to burning polymer byproducts.

  • We presented the methods calculating the reduction efficiency of nitrogen oxide for the low $NO_x$ burner as the pollution prevention facilities. The standard $NO_x$ concentration was used on the emission factor of LNG, $3.7g/m^3$. The $NO_x$ reduction efficiency based on the $NO_x$ concentration was presented and the relationships between the $NO_x$ concentration and the emission factor or the specific heat emission factor were derived. These results could be accurately reflected on calculating the amount of the nitrogen oxide emissions. In addition, according to the arrangement of the low $NO_x$ burners the methods of applying their $NO_x$ reduction efficiency were proposed. The $NO_x$ reduction efficiency for the facilities consisting of the low $NO_x$ burners and the non-low $NO_x$ burners could be estimated with information about the reduction efficiency of each low $NO_x$ burners, the fuel consumption rate, and the heating value of fuel.

  • 폐타이어를 처리하는데는 매립, 소각, 재활용법으로 구분되어 있다. 이중 재활용에 대한 관심이 고조됨에 따라 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 폐타이어 재활용법에는 원형이용, 열이용, 분말가공 이용법이 있고 본 연구에서는 이중 분말가공 방법에 의하여 고무보도블럭 제조에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 고무보도블럭 제조공정은 폐타이어를 수집하여 분쇄공정에 의해 얻은 폐타이어 고무 분말을 접착제(binder)와 혼합하여 성형하는 방법이다. 본문에서는 binder 종류에 따라 물성의 변화를 비교하여 보았고, 표면 코팅, 2층 구조 고무보도블럭을 다루어 경제적인 고무보도블럭 제조에 대하여 논하였다.

  • This work treats a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel was injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector was water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. The engine performance and emission characteristics were investigated under the wide range of operating conditions such as 40 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, 150 to $180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet-air temperature, and $60^{\circ}$ BTDC in the injection timing. The ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air was achieved in a controlled auto-ignition gasoline engine. It could be also achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engines.

Numerical Study on NO Emission with Flue Gas Dilution in Air and Fuel Sides

  • Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is widely adopted to control NO emission in combustion systems. Recirculated flue gas decreases flame temperature and reaction rate, resulting in the decrease in thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the recirculated flue gas in fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), could enhance much improved reduction in NO per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to conventional FGR in air. In the present study, the effect of dilution methods in air and fuel sides on NO reduction has been investigated numerically by using $N_2$ and $CO_2$ as diluent gases to simulate flue gases. Counterflow diffusion flames were studied in conjunction with the laminar flamelet model of turbulent flames. Results showed that $CO_2$ dilution was more effective in NO reduction because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat of $CO_2$ compared to $N_2$. Fuel dilution was more effective in reducing NO emission than air dilution when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas was used by the increase in the nozzle exit velocity, thereby the stretch rate, with dilution gas added to fuel side.

LPG / 가솔린 겸용차량의 점화시기 변환에 의한 엔진성능고찰 (A Study on Engine Performance of the Ignition Spark Timing Conversion for LPG/Gasoline Bi-fuel Vehicle)

  • In a bi-fuel engine using gasoline and LPG fuel, with the current ignition timing for gasoline being used, the optimum performance could not be taken in LPG fuel supply mode. The ignition timing in LPG fuel mode must be advanced much more than that of gasoline mode for the compensation of its higher ignition temperature. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the ignition spark timing conversion influences the engine performance of LPG/Gasoline Bi-Fuel engine. In order to investigate the engine performance during combustion, engine performance are sampled by data acquisition system, for example cylinder pressure, pressure rise rate and heat release rate, while change of the rpm(1500, 2000, 2500) and the ignition timing advance($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$). As the result, between 1500rpm, 2000rpm and 2500rpm, the cylinder pressure and pressure rise rate was increased when the spark ignition was advanced but pressure rise rate at $20^{\circ}$ was smaller value.

  • 인젝터의 배열과 형상 변화는 연소실내에서의 미립화, 증발, 혼합, 화학반응 등을 변화시킴으로써 액체로켓엔진의 연소 조건과 열 교환에 영향을 준다. 본 논문에서는 연소실내의 다양한 현상 중 인젝터 배열이 혼합비 분포에 미치는 영향을 물리적 접근방법을 통하여 살펴보고 프로그램을 작성하여 혼합비 분포를 계산 하고자 하였다. 단, 예측 방법의 유도 과정에서 도입된 물리 현상의 단순화와 여러 가정으로 인해 본 방법의 적용성과 정확성에는 한계가 있으나 mechanical patternator 사용이 어려운 full scale 가스발생기나 연소기의 국부적인 혼합비 예측에 효과적인 활용이 될 수 있으리라 판단된다.

  • 본 논문에서는 유한요소해석을 통해 연소시험 과정 중 발생한 내열 구조품의 파단현상이 분석되었다. 구조 불안정성은 소성변형으로 인한 것으로 이는 급격한 열하중의 변화에서 비롯된 것이다. 한편 소성변형 국부화 현상을 이해하기 위해 Armstrong-Frederick과 Phillips 경화식을 이용, 이중후방응력 구성방정식이 제안되었으며, 또한 본 모델은 연속체 파손역학과 조합되었으며 광범위한 소성변형거동을 보일 수 있다. 수치해석을 통해 소성변형 집중 현상은 지배적인 후방응력의 전개에 의존하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 물체 내에서의 파손 현상은 소성변형 집중을 가속화하는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

환경차폐코팅용 이터븀 실리케이트의 제조와 물성평가 (Fabrication and Characterization of Ytterbium Silicates for Environmental Barrier Coating Applications)

  • Environmental barrier coatings(EBCs) are applied to the SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites(CMCs) in order to protect CMCs from being corroded with water vapor by combustion gas in gas turbine engines. Ytterbium silicates, such as ytterbium monosilicate and ytterbium disilicate, are ones of the candidate materials for EBCs due to their excellent resistance to water vapor corrosion as well as thermal-expansion match with SiC. In this study, ytterbium silicates are fabricated with 2-step solid-state synthesis targeting ytterbium disilicate. After synthesizing ytterbium monosilicate, the mixtures of ytterbium monosilicate and SiO2 are heat-treated and densified by using pressureless sintering or hot pressing with a variety of heating conditions. The phase formation, thermal expansion, and oxidation behavior are examined with fabricated specimens. The final densified bodies are found to be composites between ytterbium monosilicate and ytterbium disilicate with different ratios, which results in 4.43 to 6.72×10-6/K range of coefficients of thermal expansion. The probability of these ytterbium silicates for EBC applications is also discussed.

Tritium radioactivity estimation in cement mortar by heat-extraction and liquid scintillation counting

  • Tritium extraction from radioactively contaminated cement mortar samples was performed using heating and liquid scintillation counting methods. Tritiated water molecules (HTO) can be present in contaminated water along with water molecules (H2O). Water is one of the primary constituents of cement mortar dough. Therefore, if tritium is present in cement mortar, the buildings and structures using this cement mortar would be contaminated by tritium. The radioactivity level of the materials in the environment exposed to tritium contamination should be determined for their disposal in accordance with the criteria of low-level radioactive waste disposal facility. For our experiments, the cement mortar samples were heated at different temperature conditions using a high-temperature combustion furnace, and the extracted tritium was collected into a 0.1 M nitric acid solution, which was then mixed with a liquid scintillator to be analyzed in a liquid scintillation counter (LSC). The tritium extraction rate from the cement mortar sample was calculated to be 90.91% and 98.54% corresponding to 9 h of heating at temperatures of 200 ℃ and 400 ℃, respectively. The tritium extraction rate was close to 100% at 400 ℃, although the bulk of cement mortar sample was contaminated by tritium.
