SiC composite materials are usually used to very high temperature condition such as thermal protection system materials at space vehicles, combustion chambers or engine nozzles because they have high specific strength and good thermal properties at high temperature. One of the most widely used fabrication methods of SiC composites is the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process. During the process, chemical gases including Si are introduced into porous preform which is made by carbon fibers for infiltration. Since the processes take a very long time, it is important to reduce the process time in designing the reactors and processes. In this study, both the gas flow and heat transfer in the reactors during the processes are analyzed using a computational fluid dynamics method in order to design reactors and processes for uniform, high quality SiC composites. Effects of flow rate and heater temperature as process parameters to the infiltration process were examined.

In the present study, the numerical investigation has been carried out to see the effects of water mist sprays on the fire suppression mechanism. The special-purposed program named as FDS was used to simulate the interaction of fire plume and water mists. This program solves the fire-driven flows using LES turbulence model, the mixture fraction combustion model, the finite volume method of radiation transport for a non-scattering gray gas, and conjugate heat transfer between wall and gas flow. The computational domain was composed of a rectangular space dimensioned as $L{\times}W{\times}H=4.0{\times}4.0{\times}2.5\;m^3$ with a mist-injecting nozzle installed 1.0 m high from the fire pool. In this paper, two types of nozzles were chosen to compare the performance of the fire suppression. Numerical results showed that the nozzle, type A, with more orifices having smaller diameters had poorer performance than the other one, type B because the flow injected through side holes deteriorated the primary flow. The fire-extinguishing time of type A was 2.6 times bigger than that of type B.

The first stage rotating blade of industrial gas turbine is one of the components that is normally run in exposed state at the highest temperature of the combustion gas stream. For this reason superior materials and advanced cooling technology are required to allow higher heat resisting characteristics of the component. The 1st stage blade of a selected commercial gas turbine blade made of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy has a row of cooling holes on its trailing edge. In most cases, minor cracks have been found at some of the root cooling holes after one cycle operation (24,000 hrs) or even shorter operation time because of the high temperature gradient and the frequently alternating thermal stress. In the repair process, unfortunately, it is usually very difficult to get rid of the damage due to the fact that cracks are initiated at the root cooling hole and propagated deep into the hole. In this study, the feasibility of removing the sidewall cracks in the hole by utilizing EDM drilling has been investigated. Also the criteria of surface integrity for EDM drilling were established to achieve high quality repair as well as machining accuracy.

The structural and thermal stability of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ electrode during cycling process was studied. The sample was prepared by simple combustion method. Although there were irreversible changes on the initial cycle, O3 stacking for $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ structure was retained during the first and subsequent cycling process. Impedance of the test cell was decreased after the first charge-discharge process, which would be of benefit to intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ion on subsequent cycling. As expected, cycling test for 75 times increased impedance of the cell a little, instead, thermal stability of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ was improved. Moreover, based on DSC analysis, the initial exothermic peak was shifted to high temperature range and the amount of heat was also decreased after cycling test, which displayed that thermal stability was not deteriorated during cycling.

This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine performance and emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to 18$0^{\circ}C$ in the inlet air temperature. The compression ignition gasoline engine can be achieved that the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. For example. the allowable lean limit of air-fuel ratio is extended until 63 at engine speed of 1000 rpm and inlet air temperature of 17$0^{\circ}C$. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.
The narrow band-averaged transmissivity of $CO_2-H_2O$ mixtures is expressed by multiplying the transmissivities of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. Applying the multiplication property of narrow band transmissivities for gas mixtures of $CO_2-H_2O$, the number of gray gases, required for accurate representation of the absorption characteristics by using the narrow band based WSGGM, is significantly increased. To reduce the computational loads by reducing the number of gray gases, we propose a gray gas regrouping process where the gray gases used for the WSGGM are regrouped into a specified number of groups according to the magnitudes of absorption coefficients. To evaluate the proposed WSGGM for gas mixtures, the radiative transfer problems through three-dimensional gas media are considered. The radiative source terms and the radiative heat fluxes obtained by using the proposed method are fairly well compared to those obtained by using the SNB model. The regrouping technique results in an excellent computational efficiency with minor loss of accuracy.
The microwave of 2450 MHz, generated by a household cooking oven, was evaluated for its applicability to melt various rehydrated media and to remove dissolved oxygen from tubed media for anaerobic culture. The effect on the sterilization of E. coli in selective media was also evaluated. The following results were obtained. 10 The microwave oven was useful in saving time for melting media and in eliminating heat and combustion gas from the laboratory, which were inevitable by-products in the conventional flame method. 2) Dissolved oxygen could be removed without boiling over by exposing the tubes of anaerobic culture medium after putting them in a wire basket in a beaker with water. 30 The count of E. coli during the melting of MacConkey and EMB agar were similar to those treated with open flame. The microwave treatment was not considered a possible mean to replace autoclaving even in these selective media.

Extreme recovery of the thermal energy from the combustion of flue gas may bring about early gas condensation resulting in the increased formation of nitric acid vapor. The behavior of the nitric acid formed inside the stack and in the atmosphere was investigated through a computer-aided simulation in this study. Low temperatures led to high conversion rates of the nitrogen oxide to nitric acid, according to the Arrhenius relationship. Larger acid plumes could be formed with the cooled flue gas at $40^{\circ}C$ than the present exiting gas at $115^{\circ}C$. The acid vapor plume of 0.1 ppm extended to 25 m wide and 200 m high. The wind, which had a seasonal local average of 3 m/s, expanded the influencing area to 170 m along the ground level. Its tail stretched 50 m longer at $40^{\circ}C$ than at $115^{\circ}C$. The emission concentration of the acid vapor in the summer season was a little lower than in the winter. However, a warm atmosphere facilitated the Brownian motion of the discharged flue gas, finally leading to more vigorous dispersion.
Micro catalytic reactors are alternative propulsion device that can be used on a nano satellite. When used with a monopropellant, $H_2O_2$, a micro catalytic reactor needs only one supply system as the monopropellant reacts spontaneously on contact with catalyst and releases heat without external ignition, while separate supply lines for fuel and oxidizer are needed for a bipropellant rocket engine. Additionally, $H_2O_2$ is in liquid phase at room temperature, eliminating the burden of storage for gaseous fuel and carburetion of liquid fuel. In order to design a micro catalytic reactor, an appropriate catalyst material must be selected. Considering the safety concern in handling the monopropellants and reaction performance of catalyst, we selected hydrogen peroxide at volume concentration of 70% and perovskite redox catalyst of lantanium cobaltate doped with strondium. Perovskite catalysts are known to have superior reactivity in reduction-oxidation chemical processes. In particular, lantanium cobaltate has better performance in chemical reactions involving oxygen atom exchange than other perovskite materials. In the present study, a process to prepare perovskite type catalyst, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$, and measurement of its propellant decomposition performance in a test reactor are described.
Experiments were performed to investigate the melting characteristics of pellet fuel made of LDPE and PP for a waste plastic firing boiler. Pellet fuel in a burner goes through conduction, convection and radiation transferred from flame in a furnace, and complex thermo/chemical processes. To figure out effects of ambient temperature and size of pellet on melting time pellets with a diameter from 5 mm to 40 mm were made to contact high temperature flue gas generated by a LNG firing pilot burner. Though melting processes of plastics include complicated heat transfer in a burner, parameters are limited to flue gas temperature and size for the simplicity in this study. From the results, melting times of LDPE and PP with a diameter of 5mm are 63 and 62 secs respectively at 600 $^{\circ}C$ while 677 and 583 sees respectively for a diameter of 40 mm. At $900^{\circ}C$, melting times of LDPE and PP with a diameter of 5mm are 21 and 24 sees respectively while 408 and 337 secs respectively for a diameter of 40 mm. It is found that melting time of LDPE is longer than that of PP, and melting times of both in general increase with diameter of pellets. It is thought melting is dependent mostly on melting temperature of plastic. It is expected melting times obtained from the study might be taken into account in designing a pellet firing burner for a boiler
