  • This work was investigated 2-stage injection strategy on combustion and emissions in a direct injection compression-ignition engine fueled with DME. Single cylinder engine was equipped with common rail. Injection pressure was 700bar, dSOI between the main injection and the pilot injection was varied. Diesel was used as compared fuel of DME in all cases. The results was shown that maximum pressure was higher than all cases and its amount of DME and diesel was similar. Regardless the pilot injection, the main fuel injection timing was same. The heat release rate of the main injection for diesel was high while that of pilot injection for DME was high. The THC was very low regardless of the fuel type and injection strategy. In the single injection, NOx was increased to retard of main injection timing regardless of the fuel type. NOx emissions was decreased with the retardation of the main injection timing regardless of the fuel type in the case of 2-stage injection strategy.

  • Moxa-combustion therapy make use of heat stimulus and chemicals result form when cauterize the skin with moxa cones to medical cares. However, recently moxibustion have been utilized less than acupuncture for treatment of disease in a practicing oriental physicians. To determine variable parameters (the numbers, the times, the quantities, the locations) affected moxibustion's effects, the gastrin serum level in rats were observed. In experiment, male Spraque-Dawley rats (body wt. 140-160g) were selected. Anything is performed to normal group. Control group were only anesthetized with inhalation in normal group. Experimental group were anesthetized and cauterized with moxa at BL21 by way of direct moxibustion. The size of moxa cone is 1.6±0.2㎎. The moxibustion as 5 times a day for five days has shown most significant effects and the moxibustion as a aquantity of 1, 5, 10 times moxa united one respectly, inverse to quantity in effects. The moxibustion for five days has also shown an most significant effects. The moxibustion at unilateral acupoints BL21 have less effects than bilateral one and these effects had no difference between control group after vagotomy. This results indicate that moxibustion's effects are not direct proportion to moxa cone size and frequency but imply that there is adequate value of moxibustion.

  • The effects of strain rate and preferential diffusion of $H_2$ on flame extinction are numerically studied in interacting premixed syngas-air flames with fuel compositions of 50% $H_2$ + 50% CO and 30% $H_2$ + 70% CO. Flame stability diagrams mapping lower and upper limit fuel concentrations at flame extinction as a function of strain rate are examined. Increasing strain rate reduces the boundaries of both flammable lean and rich fuel concentrations and produces a flammable island and subsequently even a point, implying that there exists a limit strain rate over which interacting flame cannot be sustained anymore. Even if effective Lewis numbers are slightly larger than unity on extinction boundaries, the shape of the lean extinction boundary is slanted even at low strain rate, i.e. $a_g=30s^{-1}$ and is more slanted in further increase of strain rate, implying that flame interaction on lean extinction boundary is strong and thus hydrogen (as a deficient reactant) Lewis number much less than unity plays an important role of flame interaction. It is also shown that effects of preferential diffusion of $H_2$ cause flame interaction to be stronger on lean extinction boundaries and weaker on rich extinction boundaries. Detailed analyses are made through the comparison between flame structures with and without the restriction of the diffusivities of $H_2$ and H in symmetric and asymmetric fuel compositions. The reduction of flammable fuel compositions in increase of strain rate suggests that the mechanism of flame extinction is significant conductive heat loss from the stronger flame to ambience.

  • Butanol has an ability to improve the ignition quality due to its lower latent heat of vaporization; it has an advantage to reduce a volume of a fuel tank because its energy density is higher than that of ethanol. Also, butanol-diesel oil blending quality is good because butanol has an effect to prevent the phase-separation between two fuels. Even if the blended oil contains water, it can reduce the corrosion of the fuel line. Thus, it is possible to use butanol-diesel oil blended fuel in diesel engine without modification, and it may reduce the environment pollution due to NOx and particulate and the consumption of diesel oil. Therefore, some studies are being advanced whether butanol is adequate as an alternative fuel for diesel engines, and the results of the combustion and exhaust gas emission characteristics are being presented. Though the injection and spray characteristics of butanol are more important in diesel combustion, the has not yet dealt with the matter. In this study, the influence in which differences of physical properties between butanol and diesel oil may affect the injection and spray characteristics such as injection rate, penetration, spray cone angle, spray velocity and process of spray development were examined by using CRDI system, injection rate measuring device and spray visualization system. The results exhibited that the injection and macroscopic spray characteristics of two fuels were nearly the same.

  • In this study, a thermal hydrolysis technology was used to treat the poultry carcasses that were killed due to Avian Influenza (AI) occurrence, as well as to determine the possibility of fueling for the resultant products. Experimental results showed that the poultry carcasses were liquefied except for sand, and showed the optimum efficiency at $190^{\circ}C$ and operating time of 60 minutes. It has been shown that liquid products obtained after thermal hydrolysis has good conditions for fuel conversion since it had high carbon contents and calorific value, as well as low ash content. In addition, it was possible to operate the thermal hydrolysis facility by using only the waste heat generated in the combustion without injecting the auxiliary fuel, and the exhaust gas generated in the combustion has a small influence on the atmosphere.

  • This work investigates the potential of in-cylinder thermal stratification and fuel stratification for extending the operating ranges in HCCI engines, and the coupling between thermal stratification and fuel stratification. Computational results areemployed. The computations were conducted using both a custom multi-zone version and the standard single-zone version of the Senkin application of the CHEMKINII kinetics rate code, and kinetic mechanism for di-methyl ether (DME). This study shows that the potential of thermal stratification and fuels stratification for extending the high-load operating limit by a staged combustion event with reduced pressure-rise rates is very large. It was also found that those stratification offers good potential to extend low-load limit by a same mechanism in high-load. However, a combination of thermal stratification and fuel stratification is not more effective than above stratification techniques for extending the operating ranges showing similar results of fuel stratification. Sufficient condition for combustion (enough temperature for) turns misfire in low-load limit to operate engines, which also leads to knock in high-load limit abruptly due to the too high temperature with high. DME shows a potential for maximizing effect of stratification to lower pressure-rise rate due to the characteristics of low-temperature heat release.

  • Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, lab-scale gas turbine combustor to see the effect of partial premixing on unstable flame structure and Nox emission characteristics. The swirl angle is 45 deg., fuel-air mixing degrees were varied 0, 50 and 100% respectively at equivalence ratio ranging from 0.53 to 0.79. The evolution of phased-locked OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD. NOx emission characteristics were also investigated at each experimental condition. The effect of the fuel-air mixing degree on the flame structure was obtained from phase-locked $OH^*$ images. And it was obtained from local heat release characteristics that the information about the region which the combustion instability was amplified or damped. It also could be confirmed that $\sigma$ has greatly influence on NOx emission characteristics at lean regimes. It would be expected that it could provide invaluable data for understanding the mechanism of combustion instability.

  • This paper deals with an acoustic model for a lean premixed gas turbine combustor composed of three stages: premixing chamber, nozzle and flame tube. Our model is given as an acoustic transfer function whose input is a heat release rate perturbation and output is a velocity perturbation at a flame location. We have shown that the resonance frequencies are functions of three round-trip frequencies of acoustic wave in each stage, and area ratios between stages. By analyzing poles of the acoustic transfer function, we could characterize resonant frequencies and their dependency on various system parameters of a combustor. It was found that our analytic findings match with existing numerical and experimental results in literature.

  • This paper represents axial mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and swirl number based on momentum flux measured in the X-Y plane and Y-Z plane respectively of a cone type gas swirl burner by using X-probe from the hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rates 350 and $450{\ell}/min$ respectively, which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary for heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in gas furnace, in the test section of a subsonic wind tunnel. Axial mean velocities and turbulent kinetic energies show that their maximum values exist centering around narrow slits situated radially on the edge of and in the forefront of a burner until $X/R{\fallingdotseq}1.5$, but they have a peculiar shape like a starfish diffusing and developing into inward and outward of a burner by means of the mixing between flows ejected from narrow slits, an inclination baffle plate and swirl vanes respectively according to downstream regions. Moreover, they show a relatively large value in the inner region of 0.5$S_m$ obtained by integration of velocity profiles shows a characteristic that has an inflection point composing of the maximum and minimum value until X/R<3, but shows close agreement with the geometric swirl number after a distance of X/R=3.

  • In this study, one calculated the range of damage to the combustion characteristics according to the composition of LNG and the size of leaking holes, and analyzed the damage effect in case of leakage accidents caused by pipe damage in the re-gasification process for the LNG supply system. In order to confirm the combustion characteristics according to LNG composition, there was no significant difference in the result of risk analysis by LNG-producing areas. However, the higher the methane content of the components, the lower the risk of flash fire, hazardous areas of overpressure due to explosion, and thermal radiation damage caused by jet fire. In addition, one investigated the effect of leakage, holes, and ruptures on the risk range and explosions according to the size of the pipe-leakage hole. Also, the influence of overpressure and the range of damage from radiant heat could be predicted. One confirmed the effect of LNG composition and pipe-leakage size on fire and explosion.
