As fuel cells approach commercialization, hydrogen production becomes a critical step in the overall energy conversion pathway. Reforming is a process that produces a hydrogen-rich gas from hydrocarbon fuels. Hydrogen production via autothermal reforming (ATR) is particularly attractive for applications that demand a quick start-up and response time in a compact size. However, further research is required to optimize the performance of autothermal reformers and accurate models of reactor performance must be developed and validated. The design includes the requirement of accommodating a wide range of experimental set ups. Factors considered in the design of the reformer are capability to use multiple fuels, ability to vary stoichiometry, precise temperature and pressure control, implementation of enhancement methods, capability to implement variable catalyst positions and catalyst arrangement, ability to monitor and change reactant mixing, and proper implementation of data acquisition. A model of the system was first developed in order to calculate flowrates, heating, space velocity, and other important parameters needed to select the hardware that comprises the reformer. Predicted performance will be compared to actual data once the reformer construction is completed. This comparison will quantify the accuracy of the model and should point to areas where further model development is required. The end result will be a research tool that allows engineers to optimize hydrogen production via autothermal reformation.

In this research, numerical analysis was carried out on novel and existing fins, adjusted in terms of factors such as length, spacing, and angle, of a high-temperature heat exchanger for a 1 kW class Stirling engine, designed as a prime mover for a domestic cogeneration system. The performance improvement as a result of shape optimization was confirmed with numerical analysis by including the air preheater, which was not considered during optimization. However, a negative heat flux was observed in the cylinder head portion. This phenomenon was clarified by analyzing the exhaust gas and wall surface temperature of the combustion chamber. Furthermore, assuming an ideal cycle, the effects of heat transfer enhancement on the thermodynamic cycle and system performance were predicted.
Microporous gel films of 29 m were prepared by the gel drawing of UHMWPE/soybean oil blend (4:6, w/w) up to 800%. The stretched films containing the optimal photoinitiator concentration, depending on the film thickness, was cross-linked under 365 nm LED-UV irradiation and the oil was extracted with n-hexane, resulting in a gel fraction of 95 % or more. With the formation of the cross-linked structure, the melt-down temperature and melt-down elongation increased by 16 ℃ and by 63% respectively. Also the thermal stability of the crosslinked UHMWPE was proved by the area shrinkage under the heat treatment decreased to 3.8 % compared to 17.4 % for the pristine film, and by the reductions in the combustion heat. The enhanced thermal stability of the crosslinked UHMWPE microporous membranes can be used for various industrial applications such as filters, electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

In order to verify the enhancement of ozone and carbon monoxide (CO) during springtime in East Asia, we investigated weather conditions and data from remote sensors, air quality models, and air quality monitors. These include the geopotential height archived from the final (FNL) meteorological field, the potential vorticity and the wind velocity simulated by the Meteorological Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5), the back trajectory estimated by the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, the total column amount of ozone and the aerosol index retrieved from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), the total column density of CO retrieved from the Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT), and the concentration of ozone and CO simulated by the Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers (MOZART). In particular, the total column density of CO, which mightoriginate from the combustion of fossil fuels and the burning of biomass in China, increased in East Asia during spring 2000. In addition, the enhancement of total column amounts of ozone and CO appeared to be associated with both the upper cut-off low near 500 hPa and the frontogenesis of a surface cyclone during a weak Asian dust event. At the same time, high concentrations of ozone and CO on the Earth's surface were shown at the Seoul air quality monitoring site, located at the surface frontogenesis in Korea. It was clear that the ozone was invaded by the downward stretched vortex anomalies, which included the ozone-rich airflow, during movement and development of the cut-off low, and then there was the catalytic photochemical reaction of ozone precursors on the Earth's surface during the day. In addition, air pollutants such as CO and aerosol were tracked along both the cyclone vortex and the strong westerly as shown at the back trajectory in Seoul and Busan, respectively. Consequently, the maxima of ozone and CO between the two areas showed up differently because of the time lag between those gases, including their catalytic photochemical reactions together with the invasion from the upper troposphere, as well as the path of their transport from China during the weak Asian dust event.

Hybrid rockets have lately attracted attention as a strong candidate of small, low cost, safe and reliable launch vehicles. A significant topic is that the first commercially sponsored space ship, SpaceShipOne vehicle chose a hybrid rocket. The main factors for the choice were safety of operation, system cost, quick turnaround, and thrust termination. In Japan, five universities including Hokkaido University and three private companies organized "Hybrid Rocket Research Group" from 1998 to 2002. Their main purpose was to downsize the cost and scale of rocket experiments. In 2002, UNISEC (University Space Engineering Consortium) and HASTIC (Hokkaido Aerospace Science and Technology Incubation Center) took over the educational and R&D rocket activities respectively and the research group dissolved. In 2008, JAXA/ISAS and eleven universities formed "Hybrid Rocket Research Working Group" as a subcommittee of the Steering Committee for Space Engineering in ISAS. Their goal is to demonstrate technical feasibility of lowcost and high frequency launches of nano/micro satellites into sun-synchronous orbits. Hybrid rockets use a combination of solid and liquid propellants. Usually the fuel is in a solid phase. A serious problem of hybrid rockets is the low regression rate of the solid fuel. In single port hybrids the low regression rate below 1 mm/s causes large L/D exceeding a hundred and small fuel loading ratio falling below 0.3. Multi-port hybrids are a typical solution to solve this problem. However, this solution is not the mainstream in Japan. Another approach is to use high regression rate fuels. For example, a fuel regression rate of 4 mm/s decreases L/D to around 10 and increases the loading ratio to around 0.75. Liquefying fuels such as paraffins are strong candidates for high regression fuels and subject of active research in Japan too. Nakagawa et al. in Tokai University employed EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) to modify viscosity of paraffin based fuels and investigated the effect of viscosity on regression rates. Wada et al. in Akita University employed LTP (Low melting ThermoPlastic) as another candidate of liquefying fuels and demonstrated high regression rates comparable to paraffin fuels. Hori et al. in JAXA/ISAS employed glycidylazide-poly(ethylene glycol) (GAP-PEG) copolymers as high regression rate fuels and modified the combustion characteristics by changing the PEG mixing ratio. Regression rate improvement by changing internal ballistics is another stream of research. The author proposed a new fuel configuration named "CAMUI" in 1998. CAMUI comes from an abbreviation of "cascaded multistage impinging-jet" meaning the distinctive flow field. A CAMUI type fuel grain consists of several cylindrical fuel blocks with two ports in axial direction. The port alignment shifts 90 degrees with each other to make jets out of ports impinge on the upstream end face of the downstream fuel block, resulting in intense heat transfer to the fuel. Yuasa et al. in Tokyo Metropolitan University employed swirling injection method and improved regression rates more than three times higher. However, regression rate distribution along the axis is not uniform due to the decay of the swirl strength. Aso et al. in Kyushu University employed multi-swirl injection to solve this problem. Combinations of swirling injection and paraffin based fuel have been tried and some results show very high regression rates exceeding ten times of conventional one. High fuel regression rates by new fuel, new internal ballistics, or combination of them require faster fuel-oxidizer mixing to maintain combustion efficiency. Nakagawa et al. succeeded to improve combustion efficiency of a paraffin-based fuel from 77% to 96% by a baffle plate. Another effective approach some researchers are trying is to use an aft-chamber to increase residence time. Better understanding of the new flow fields is necessary to reveal basic mechanisms of regression enhancement. Yuasa et al. visualized the combustion field in a swirling injection type motor. Nakagawa et al. observed boundary layer combustion of wax-based fuels. To understand detailed flow structures in swirling flow type hybrids, Sawada et al. (Tohoku Univ.), Teramoto et al. (Univ. of Tokyo), Shimada et al. (ISAS), and Tsuboi et al. (Kyushu Inst. Tech.) are trying to simulate the flow field numerically. Main challenges are turbulent reaction, stiffness due to low Mach number flow, fuel regression model, and other non-steady phenomena. Oshima et al. in Hokkaido University simulated CAMUI type flow fields and discussed correspondence relation between regression distribution of a burning surface and the vortex structure over the surface.

Since hydrogen has the lower minimum ignition energy than that of gasoline, hydrogen could be also appropriate for the IC engine systems. However, due to the low ignition energy, there might be a 'back-fire' and 'pre-ignition' problems with hydrogen SI(Spark-ignition) combustion. In this research, cooling effects of intake gas mixture on the improvement of the maximum power output were evaluated in a 2.4 L SI engine. There were two ways to cool intake gas mixtures. The first one was cooling intake fresh air by adjusting inter-cooler system after turbocharger. The other one was cooling hydrogen fuel before supplying by using heat ex-changer. Cooling hydrogen was performed under natural aspired condition. The result showed that cooling fresh air from 40 ℃ to 20~30 ℃ improved the maximum brake power up to 6.5~8.6 % and cooling hydrogen fuel as -6 ℃ enhanced the maximum brake power likewise.
Regarding the design of the gas sweetening absorber, the gas distribution analysis for the increase of the sour gas removal and reduction of the tower height is very important research topics. Recently, regarding the $CO_2$ capture technology which is a promising option for the reduction of the greenhouse gas (GHG), the need for the gas distribution improvement is increased as the gas treating capacity increases. In this paper, we have investigated the sour gas distribution in the absorber using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) based on 10 MW post-combustion $CO_2$ capture plant installed in Boryeong power station, Korea Midland Power company. For this purpose, we suggested the three possible technology options (splash plate, spiral gas line and U-tube) for the gas distribution enhancement and compared the effect of the each cases. The result showed that the U-tube installed in the absorber increase the gas distribution about 30% compared to the base case, while the delta P increasement was about 10%. From these results, it was found that the U-tube installation is an effective technology option for the gas distribution enhancement in the gas sweetening absorber.

In recent times, fuel economy enhancement and environmental regulation compliance have become the main topics of interest in the automobile industry. Electric vehicles are desirable alternatives to the existing cars that employ internal combustion engines. Specifically, electric vehicles are equipped with inverters, motors, and a gearbox instead of engines and transmission mechanisms. The gearbox is a key component, used to transmit power from the electric motor to the wheel. Therefore, the design of the gearbox is critical. However, most engineers design gears based only on their experience because no standards pertaining to the design factor exist, other than those for the gear ratios. To overcome this problem, the structural stabilities must be examined considering the design factors of the gears. In this study, we considered the module and number of teeth as the main factors. The constraints corresponded to the final gear ratio and fixed distance between each axle of the shafts. Moreover, a structural analysis was conducted, and the variation trend of the maximum equivalent stress against changes in the gear module and number of teeth was examined. By performing such an analysis, the structural stability in the design of a gear system could be effectively investigated.
The automobile equipped with a gasoline engine uses the ignition coil, namely, a high voltage generator, to make the mixed fuel ignited and burned in the combustion chamber, which results in the power to drive the engine. The ignition coil functions to convert a low voltage of the primary into a hiか voltage of the secondary by switching method, which will be transmitted to the electrode. Here, if the ignition coil has a defect even a little, it cannot function well. In this study, it was chosen epoxy molding ignition coil in recently and epoxy resin which is insulation material as specimens, and it was measured the characteristics of the partial discharge occurring to the specimens when those were applied to a voltage, and thereby, it was researched and analyzed the distribution of phase angle, amount and count of discharge due to the changing voltage, And as the result is applying to the actual automobile ignition system, it can be expected the enhancement of the performance of the ignition coil and the reliability of the electrical equipment.

GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines are considered as one of the candidates for next generation engines of passenger cars, which reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. In GOI engines, a high-pressure gasoline supply system is required to directly inject the fuel to combustion chambers. Because of low lubricity of gasoline fuel, the clearance between a plunger and a barrel in GDI fuel pumps is too wide to achieve smooth hydrodynamic lubrication. Thus, it is difficult to generate high-pressure condition in GDI fuel pump since large amount of leakage flow occurs between the plunger and the barrel In this study, an optimum plunger design is presented to minimize leakage in the aspect of flow control. This paper analyzes leakage flow characteristics in the clearance to improve pumping performance of GDI fuel pumps. Effects of groove in the plunger are studied according to variations of depth and width. Evaluations of pumping performance are determined by the amount of pressure drop in the leakage path assuming a constant leakage flows. Both of turbulence and incompressible models are introduced in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. Design parameters have been introduced to minimize leakage in limited space, and a methodological study on geometrical optimization has been conducted. As results of CFD analysis in various geometrical cases, optimum groove depths have been found to generate maximum sealing effects on gasoline fuel between the plunger and the barrel. This procedure offers a methodological way of an enhancement of plunger design for high-pressure GDI fuel pumps.
