The optimization of frontal device including fuel nozzle and swirler is required to secure the mixing of fuel and air and the combustion stability leading the reduction of pollutant emissions and the increase of combustion efficiency in gas turbine combustor. The effects of injection nozzle and swirler on the flow field, spray characteristics and consequently the combustion stability, were experimentally investigated by measuring the velocity field, droplet sizes of fuel spray, lean combustion limit and the temperature field in the main combustion region. Flow fields and spray characteristics were measured with APV(Adaptive Phase Doppler Velocimetry) under atmospheric condition using kerosine fuel. Temperatures were measured by Pt-Pt13%Rh, R-type thermocouple which was 0.2mm thick. Spray and flame was visualized by ICCD(Intensified Charge Coupled Device) camera. It was found that the dual swirler resulted in the biggest recirculation zone with the highest reverse flow velocity at the central region, which lead the most stable combustion. The various combustion characteristics were observed as a function of the geometries of injector and swirler, that gave a tip for the better design of gas turbine combustor.

The experimental study was carried out to investigate the stability and the performance characteristics of the aero-valved pulsating combustion system with maximum operating capacity of 60KW. The effect of geometry of combustion system on the stable condition, the flammability limit, the total pressure oscillation amplitude, and the operating frequency can be identified, and the maximum turn-down-ratio is obtained up to 3.3. The total pressure oscillation amplitude can be controlled by tunning the length of the air inlet pipe. The empirical equation with which the operating frequency can be approximated is proposed and the discrepancy is within 5%. The volumetric efficiency is identified to be one of the important parameters determining the upper flammability limit and the maximum value of which is approximately 22%.

Combustion using oxygen enriched air is known as a technology which can increase flame stability as well as thermal efficiency due to improving the burning rate. Lift-off, blowout limit and flame length were examined as a function of jet velocity, coflow velocity and OEC(Oxygen Enriched Concentration). Blowout limit of the flame below OEC 25% decreased with increase of coflow velocity, but the limit above OEC 25% increased inversely. Lift-off height decreased with increase of OEC. In particular, lift-off hardly occurred in the condition above OEC 40%. Flame length of the flames above OEC 40% was increased until the blowout occurred. Great flame stability was obtained since lift-off and blowout limit significantly increased with increase of OEC.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the flame stability of the synthetic gas (syngas) using an impinging premixed jet burner. Since the syngas mainly consisted of $H_2$ and CO, the $H_2$/CO mixture was simulated as the syngas. $H_2$/CO mixture ratios, fuel/air mixture velocities and equivalence ratios were used as major parameters on the flame stabilitym The role of the impinging plate on the flame stability was also examined. In addition, laminar burning velocities of the $H_2$/CO mixture were predicted numerically to understand the characteristics of the flame stability for the syngas. The increase in the H2 concentration into the syngas brings about the extension of the blowout limit and the reduction in the flashback limit in terms of the stable flame region. The impinging jet plate broadened the blowout limit but does not play important role in changing of the flashback limit. Finally, it was found that the stability region of the flame using the syngas, which is expressed in terms of the mixture velocity and the equivalence ratio in this study, significantly differed from that of $CH_4$.

Thermal effect of finite-rate chemistry on linear combustion stability and film cooling effect are investigated in sample rocket engine. The flow variables required to evaluate stability limits are obtained from CFD data with finite-rate chemistry adopted in three dimensional chamber. Major flow variables are affected appreciably by finite-rate chemistry and thereby, the calculated stability limits are modified. It is found that finite-rate chemistry contributes to stability enhancement in thermal point of view. And film cooling also has the effect of combustion stabilization.

In this study, syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel and has hydrogen as a major component, was added to a gasoline engine to improve combustion stability and exhaust emissions of idle state. Syngas fraction of the total supplied fuel varied to 0 %, 25 %, 50 % with various ignition timing and excess air ratio. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Results showed that syngas has ability to widely extend lean operation limit and ignition retard range with dramatical reduction of engine out emissions. It is supposed that the usage of syngas in the internal combustion engine is an effective solution to meet the future strict emission regulations.
Recently, fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicle has been applied to internal combustion engines, with various purpose. Syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component. It has better effort in combustion characteristics such as wide flammability and hig speed flame propagation. In this study, syngas was added to a gasoline engine for the improvement of combustion stability and exhaust emission in idle state. Combustion stability, exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on idle performance. Recently, the efforts to improve fuel economy and to reduce pollutant emission have become the main subject in the development of a gasoline engine. A lean combustion engine admitted as the best alternative is relatively lower fuel consumption rate and exhaust emissions. In this study, it is focused on intensifying intake flow field as one of methods to improve the performance of the lean combustion. First, three different types of suitable swirl control valve(SC7) with high swirl and tumble ratio are selected through steady flow experiment, being installed in a spark ignition engine. The relationship between lean misfire limit and torque was investigated with injection timing and spark ignition timing. Also, the effect of intensified swirl new on the combustion Stability and exhaust emissions was experimently examined by the measuring in-cylinder pressure and combustion variation. The results show that the engine with swirl control calve is superior to other conventional engine on the lean misfire limit, specific torque, combustion variation and emission, and the appropriate injection timing and spark ignition timing exist according to the type of swirl control valve.
The detachment stability characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO jet attached flames were studied. The flame stability was observed while varying the syngas fuel composition, coaxial nozzle diameter and fuel nozzle rim thickness. The detachment stability limit of the syngas single jet flame was found to decrease with increasing mole fraction of carbon monoxide in the fuel. In hydrogen jet flames with coaxial air, the flame detachment stability was found to be independent of the coaxial nozzle diameter. However, velocities of appearance of liftoff and blowout velocities of lifted flames have dependence. At lower fuel velocity range, the critical coaxial air velocity leading to flame detachment increases with increasing fuel jet velocity, whereas at higher fuel velocity range, it decreases. This increasing-decreasing non-monotonic trend appears for all $H_2$/CO syngas compositions (50/50~100/0% $H_2$/CO). To qualitatively understand the flame behavior near the nozzle rim, $OH^*$ chemiluminescence imaging was performed near the detachment limit conditions. For all fuel compositions, local extinction on the rim is observed at lower fuel velocities(increasing stability region), while local flame extinction downstream of the rim is observed at higher fuel velocities(decreasing stability region). Maximum values of the non-monotonic trends appear to be identical when the fuel jet velocity is normalized by the critical fuel velocity obtained in the single jet cases.
