  • Recently. the market trend for marine diesel engine has involved the lower running speeds. larger stroke/bore ratio and higher combustion pressure. Consequently, because of the flexible engine shafting system due to the larger mass. inertia and the more elasticity, the complicated coupled torsional-axial vibrations have occurred in the operating speed range. Also, the vibrations act as an excitation on the hull-structural vibration. To predict the vibration behavior with more accuracy and reliability. many studies have proposed the several kinds of method to calculate the stiffness matrix of crankshaft. However, most of these methods have a weak point to spend much time on three dimensional modeling and meshing work for crankshaft. Therefore. in this work. the stiffness matrix for the crankthrow is calculated using the energy method (Influence Coefficient Method, ICM) with the each mass having 6 degree of freedom. Its effectiveness is verified through the comparison with the stiffness matrix obtained by using the finite element method (FEM) and measured results for actual ships propulsion system.

  • Liquid rocket engines using liquefied natural gas (LNG) or methane as a fuel is known to have several good characteristics, such as high specific impulse compared to other hydrocarbon fuels, environment-friendly exhaust gas, low production cost, and re-usability with low soot generation in the cooling channel. In this study, experimental combustion chambers capable of using LNC and $CH_{4}$ are being researched through experimental firing tests, and within easy range of eyes' inspection, there are the periodical existence of soot or discoloration in the chamber wall surface. This result means that mixture ratio of oxidizer and fuel fluctuates periodically between outer-row injectors in the mixing head in the circumferential direction. Therefore, based on this phenomenon, the variation of mixture ratio near the chamber wall caused by the spill pattern of a shear coaxial injector was analyzed quantitatively and the thermal heat flux Into the cooling channel is modified. Then, the calculated and modified results are compared with the measured ones.

  • We measured emission indices for $NO_x$, CO, temperature and radical characteristics for partially premixied flames formed by suction & blow fans air condition. At sufficiently high levels of partial premixing a double flame structure consisting of a rich premixed inner flame and outer diffusion flame was established similar to that previously observed in premixed flames. $NO_x$, Temperature, CO values were experimented with approximately constant air flow rate and decreasing equivalence ratios. The reduction in $NO_x$ and temperature at suction condition as compared with that for blow condition was approximately 20%, but on the contrary, CO emission was increased. In addition, We measured temperature distributions and found that temperature increased continuously with increasing partial premixing. We also estimated CH, $C_2$ radical intensity. CH and $C_2$ radicals provide evidence that, for the present measurement, CH and $C_2$ radicals intensity was associsated with their premixed component. And we observed stronger $C_2$, CH radicals intensity at suction conditions than blow conditions.

  • Residual gas acts as a diluent which results in reducing the in-cylinder temperature as well as the flame speed, significantly affecting fuel economy, NOx emissions and combustion stability. Therefore it is important to determine the residual gas fraction as a function of the engine operating parameters accurately. However, the determination of the residual gas fraction is very sophisticated due to the unsteady state of induction and exhaust process. There has been little work toward the development of a generally applicable model for quantitative predictions of residual gas fraction. In this paper, a simple model for calculating the residual gas fraction in SI engines was formulated. The effects of engine operating parameters on the residual gas were also investigated. The amount of fresh air was evaluated through AFR and fuel consumption. After this, from the intake temperature and pressure, the amount of total cylinder-charging gas was estimated. The residual fraction was derived by comparing the total charging and fresh air. This results coincide with measured value very well.

  • The cylinder cover stud of low-speed marine diesel engine is more than just a stud. It is a large structural element occasionally weighing over 200 kg used for assembling the combustion chamber components. Therefore, to understand the structural behavior of the stud and design it safely is quite important considering a catastrophic failure which can be arisen from an inadequate use of it. In this paper, the analysis results of the structural behavior of the stud is introduced. Strain measurement results compared with FE analysis results are summarized. The results showed that 1) the stud stress increased with engine operating load, 2) the maximum stress amplitude was about 10 MPa which is far smaller than the stud's fatigue strength of 61 MPa, 3) the stress ratio is higher than 0.9 and the stud's load factor is about 20 %, and 4) about 7 % of initial pressure tightening load was reduced while changing to a nut tightened condition.

  • It is well known that SOx and NOx concentration has a considerable influence on the $N_2O$ emission of the greenhouse gas properties. The quantity of SOx generated during combustion, on fuel specific basis, is directly related to the sulfur content of the fuel oil. However, restricting the fuel oil sulfur content is only a partial response to limiting the overall quantity of SOx emissions, as there remains no over control on the fuel oil consumption other than the commercial pressure which have always directed the attention. This study was carried out as a new basic experiment method of emission control, manly targeted to the vessel. In the experiment, where the scrubbing was achieved through spray tower with high alkaline water made from the electrolysis of seawater, the combined action was to neutralize the exhaust gases (SOx, PM, CO etc.), dilute it, and wash it out. The results showed that SOx reduction of around 95 percent or over could be achieved when using in the high alkaline water, and also leaded to a reduction in the stability of the each pollutant components including the PM (Particulate Matter). The results suggest that the seawater electrolysis method has a very effective reduction of emissions without heavy cost, or catalysts particularly on board.

  • Recently, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system which re-flow a cooled exhaust gas from vehicles burning diesel as fuel to a combustion chamber of engine has been used to solve the serious air pollution. For the design and mass production of EGR system, it is essential to ensure structural integrity evaluation. The EGR system consisted of ten dimpled oval core rectangular tubes, two fix-plates, two coolant pipes, shell body and two flanges in this study. To confirm the safety of the designed system, finite element modeling about each component such as the dimpled oval core tube with the dimpled shape and others was carried out. The reliability of EGR system against exhaust gas flow with high temperature was investigated by flow and pressure analysis in the system. Also, thermal and strength analysis were verified the safety of EGR system against temperature change in the shell and tubes. Furthermore, modal analysis using ANSYS was also performed. From the results of FE analysis, there were confirmed that EGR system was safe against the flow of exhaust gas, temperature change in EGR system and vibration on operation condition, respectively.

  • Diesel power plants are frequently used as a power supplier on the island and the isolated places where electric power is required. The heat efficiency of the low speed 2 stroke diesel engines is higher than those of 4 stroke diesel engines or other heat engines and further its mobility and durability is also better than other engines. They can be also easily repaired and maintained. With these advantages, demand for the use of the low speed 2 stroke diesel engine as a power source is increasing. However, there are some disadvantages with these diesel engines such as the bigger vibrating excitation forces generated by higher combustion pressure in cylinder and by the inertia force of the reciprocating parts. Further, engine vibrations are transfered into their adjacent buildings and manufacturing factories and eventually produces local vibrations. In order to reduce X-mode vibration of engine body, several methods have been introduced in the recent researches. In this paper, accordingly, a new vibrationcontrol method applying a synchrophaser and a top bracing between two diesel engines is adopted in order to reduce these structural vibrations of diesel power plant. It was experimentally verified that the structural vibrations were greatly reduced by the phase adjustment for the 6th order X-mode vibration with the synchrophaser and the top bracing.

  • For a cooling performance research of the combustor operated in a extreme environment of a high temperature and high pressure, we accomplished a cooling performance analysis. Generally a heat transfer characteristic in cooling passage is known well experimentally and theoretically, however heat flux in the combustion chamber isn't. In this study, fluid flow combined with heat transfer analysis is accomplished about a combustor nozzle. We tried to analyze the cooling performance with a heat transfer characteristic of a gas and coolant side in the view point of quantity on the mass flow rate to be supplied to the cooling channel. And finally, evaluation on the thermal safety of nozzle wall material was accomplished.
