Non oxide ceramics such as nitrides of transition metals have shown significant potential for future economic impact, in diverse applications in ceramic, aerospace and electronic industries, as refractory products, abrasives and cutting tools, aircraft components, and semi-conductor substrates amid others. Combustion synthesis has become an attractive alternative to the conventional furnace technology to produce these materials cheaply, faster and at a higher level of purity. However he process os highly exothermic and manifests complex dynamics due to its strongly non-linear nature. In order to develop an understanding of this process and to study the effect of operational parameters on the final outcome, numerical modeling is necessary, which would generated essential knowledge to help scale-up the process. the model is based on a system of parabolic-hyperbolic partial differential equations representing the heat, mass and momentum conservation relations. The model also takes into account structural change due to sintering and volumetric expansion, and their effect on the transport properties of the system. The solutions of these equations exhibit steep moving spatial gradients in the form of reaction fronts, propagating in space with variable velocity, which gives rise to varying time scales. To cope with the possibility of extremely abrupt changes in the values of the solution over very short distances, adaptive mesh techniques can be applied to resolve the high activity regions by ordering grid points in appropriate places. To avoid a control volume formulation of the solution of partial differential equations, a simple orthogonal, adaptive-mesh technique is employed. This involves separate adaptation in the x and y directions. Through simple analysis and numerical examples, the adaptive mesh is shown to give significant increase in accuracy in the computations.

This paper represents the vector fields, three dimensional mean velocities, the turbulent intensities, the turbulent kinetic energy, and the Reynolds shear stresses in the X-Y plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rates 350 and 450ℓ/min respectively, which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary for heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in gas furnace, in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The vector plot shows that the maximum axial mean velocity component exists in the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of gas swirl burner, for that reason, there is some entrainment phenomena of ambient air in the outer region of burner. Moreover, mean velocities in the initial region are largely distributed near the outer region of burner at Y/R≒0.97, but they diffuse and develop into the center flow region of burner according to the increase of axial distance. The turbulent intensities and the turbulent kinetic energy due to large inclination of mean velocity and swirl effect show that the maximum value in the initial region of burner is formed in the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of gas swirl burner and large values are mainly formed in the entire region of burner after X/R=2.4358, hence, the combustion reaction is anticipated to occur actively near this region. And the Reynolds shear stresses are also largely distributed from slite to vanes of gas swirl burner in the intial region, but their values largely disappear after X/R=3.2052.
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was peformed for the backdraft occurred in a compartment filled with high-temperature methane fuel using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) of version 6. The prediction performance of FDS, adopted the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) combustion model with five different chemical reaction mechanisms, was evaluated. The temporal distributions of temperature, fuel mass fraction, velocity and pressure were discussed with numerical results and the pressure variation in time was compared with that of previous experiment. The FDS adopted the EDC model showed the possibility of LES for the backdraft phenomena. However, the prediction performance of the LES with EDC model strongly depended on the chemical reaction mechanism considered. It is necessary that the suitability of the chemical reaction mechanism should be validated in advance for LES with the FDS v6 to be applied to the simulation of backdraft.
Gas explosion characteristics of hydrogen and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) were measured in 6L cylindrical vessel, and experiment for explosion to fire transition phenomena of the gases were carried out using the 270L vessel. Explosion characteristics were measured using the stain type pressure transducer and explosion to fire transition phenomena was analyzed with the hish-speed camera. Base on the experiment, it was found that explosion pressure was most high slightly above the stoichiometric concentration, and explosion pressure rise rate and flame propagation velocity were proportional to the combustion velocity. And we find that those kind of explosion characteristics affect the explosion-to-fire transition, in addition, explosion flame temperature, flame residence time, are important parameters in explosion-to-fire transition.

A numerical analysis of reactive flow in a MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustor is accomplished to elucidate the characteristics of combustion phenomena in the furnace with the variation of air fuel ratio. For the smaller magnitude of air injection velocity(10 m/s), the air flow could not penetrate toward upper part of furnace. On the other hand, the air flow suppresses the fuel flow for the case of air injection velocity 30 m/s. The air velocity 18 m/s is corresponding to the stoichiometric air flow velocity, and for that case, the air flows to relatively more upper part of the furnace when compared with the case of air injection velocity 10 m/s. The reaction zone is produced with the previous flow pattern, so that the reaction zone of the air injection velocity 10 m/s is biased to the air nozzle side and for the case of air injection velocity 30 m/s, the reaction zone is inclined to the fuel nozzle side. For the cases with the air injection velocities 16, 18, 20 m/s, the reaction zone is nearly located at the center between air nozzle and fuel nozzle. The maximum temperatures and NOx concentrations for the cases of air injection velocity 16, 18, 20 m/s are lower than the cases with air injection velocity 10, 30 m/s. From the present study, the stoichiometric air fuel ratio is considered as the most optimal operating condition for the NOx reduction.

In the treatment of spent high energetic materials, the issues such as environmental pollution, safety as well as working capacity should be carefully considered and well examined. In this regard, incineration has been recommended as one of the most promising processes for the disposal of such explosives. Due to the fact that high energetic materials encompass various types and their different characteristics, the technology development dealing with various materials is not an easy task. In this study, rigorous modeling and dynamic simulation was carried out to predict dynamic physico-chemical phenomena for research department explosive (RDX). Plug flow reactor was employed to describe the incinerator with 263 elementary reactions and 43 chemical species. Simulation results showed that safe operations can be achieved mainly by controlling the reactor temperature. At 1,200 K, only thermal decomposition (combustion) occurred, whereas increasing temperature to 1,300 K, caused the reaction rates to increase drastically, which led to ignition. The temperature further increased to 3,000 K which was the maximum temperature recorded for the entire process. Case studies for different operating temperatures were also executed and it was concluded that the modeling approach and simulation results will serve as a basis for the effective design and operation of RDX incinerator.
Self-excited noise generation from laminar flames in thin annular jets of methane/air premixture has been investigated experimentally. Various flames were observed in this flow configuration, including conical shape flames, ring shape flames, steady crown shape flames, and oscillating crown shape flames. Self-excited noise with the total sound pressure level of about 70dB was generated from the oscillating crown shape flames for the equivalence ratio larger than 0.95. Sound pressure and $CH^{\ast}$ chemiluminescence were measured by using a microphone and a photomultiplier tube. The frequency of generated noise was measured as functions of equivalence ratio and premixture velocity. A frequency doubling phenomena have also been observed. The measured $CH^{\ast}$ chemiluminescence data were analyzed from which the corresponding sound pressure has been calculated. By comparing the data with those of measured ones, the noise source can be attributed to the flame front fluctuation near the edge of the oscillating crown-shape flames. The flame stability regime was influenced sensitively to the supplying air through the inner tube.

A reduced chemical kinetic mechanism is developed in order to predict the flame phenomena in premixed $CO/H_2/Air$ flames at atmospheric pressure, aimed at studying the coal gas combustion for the IGCC applications. The reduced mechanism is systematically derived from a full chemical kinetic mechanism involving 11 reacting species and 66 elementary reactions. This mechanism consists of four global steps, and is capable of explicitly calculating the concentration of 7 non-steady species and implicitly predicting the concentration of 3 steady state species. The fuel blend contains two fuels with distinct thermochemical properties, whose contribution to the radical pool in the flame is different. The flame speeds predicted by the reduced mechanism are in good agreement with those by the full mechanism and experimental results. In addition, the concentration profiles of species and temperature are also in good agreement with those by the full mechanism.
All objects emit thermal radiation and this radiation is the basis of the techniques used to detect flames. The usual phenomena occurring in the initial stage of the fire are generally invisible products of a combustion and visible smoke. Liquid or gaseous materials do not undergo a smoldering stage so that fires develop very rapidly. Also, the heat generated by the initial flames is usually not sufficient to activate a heat detector. In this case the most effective criterion for automatic fire detection is the flame. According to the fire regulation of korea, the compulsory standard provided that a flame detector shall be installed in a place that the attachment height of detector is higher than 20 m, chemical plants, hangar, refinery, etc.. The results of the research and development are discriminated between a flame and other radiant emitters, developed a UV detector tube contains an inert gas which absorbs UV radiation, developed PZT pyroelectric element is based on the use of photovoltanic cell, developed IR band-pass filter that only allow a 4.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ radiation wavelength to reach the sensors and developed UV-IR combination flame detector combined into a single detection device.

A theoretical analysis is carried out to predict the characteristics of transient ignition phenomena for the spherical fuel droplets cloud with non-uniform droplet size and number density distribution. Numerical calculations are performed for various cases depending on the combinations of the major parameters such as ambient temperature and initial distributions of droplet size and number density. The results of present study show that the ignition delay decreases for higher ambient temperature and smaller droplet size. Droplets cloud of hollow type with outer concentrated distribution ignites most rapidly.
