Evaporation and combustion characteristics of fuel droplet with carbon nanoparticle were investigated in a rapid compression machine(RCM). RCM is an experimental equipment to simulate one compression stroke of reciprocating engine. Nitrogen was charged into reaction chamber for evaporation experiment, while oxygen was charged for combustion experiment. N990 carbon black and n-heptane were used to synthesize the carbon nanofluids. Surfactant, span80, was used to make synthesis easier. The droplet pictures were taken using a high speed camera with 500 frames per second. Thermocouple, of which tip is $50{\mu}m$, was used not only to measure transient bulk temperature, but also to suspend the droplet. Reaction chamber temperature was calculated from pressure data. The evaporation rate of nanofluids was improved compared to pure fuel. The ignition delay was promoted due to the nanoparticle, but the burning rate was decreased.
The measurement of velocity and stain rate field has been conducted in opposed impinging jet combustion. When a smaller diameter (5mm) orifice of pre-chamber was used, previous studies had reported that the combustion phase showed a shift from weak turbulent combustion to moderate turbulent combustion in the modified Borghi Diagram. In the case with smaller orifice diameter (5mm), NOx emission was substantially reduced by a factor 1/2 while the combustion pressure remains at the same as that in the conventional combustion. Hence, in this study, the experiment setup using PIV technique was designed to identify the relation of the strain rate distribution and NOx reduction associated with moderate turbulent combustion. As a result, it was found that the highly strained pockets are widely distributed during the combustion in the middle of chamber when the orifice diameter is 5mm. And the corresponding PDF distribution of strain rates she was the smoothly distributed strain .ate within the range of |$\pm$1000| (1/sec) rather than a spike shape about zero point. This is the unique feature observed in the combustion with 5mm orifice diameter. Therefore, it can be concluded that the substantial NOx reduction in opposed impinging combustor is mainly attributed to the strain rate distribution within the range of |$\pm$1000|resulting in the combustion phase shift to moderate turbulent combustion.
For the development of high efficiency and low emission combustion systems, high temperature air combustion technology has been tested by utilizing preheated air over 1100 K and exhaust gas recirculation. In this system, combustion air is diluted with large amount of exhaust gases ($N_2$, $CO_2$), such that the oxygen concentration is relatively low in the reaction zone, leading to low flame temperature. Since, the temperature fluctuations and sound emissions form the flame are small and flame luminosity is low, the combustion mode is expected to be flameless or mild combustion. Experiment was performed to investigate the turbulent flame structure and $NO_X$ emission characteristics in the high temperature air combustion focused on coflowing jet diffusion flames which has a fundamental structure of many practical combustion systems. The effect of turbulence has also been evaluated by installing perforated plate in the oxidizer inlet nozzle. LPG was used as a fuel. Results showed that even though $NO_X$ emission is sensitive to the combustion air temperature, the present high temperature air combustion system produce low $NO_X$ emission because it is operated in low oxygen concentration condition in excess of dilution.
Spray combustion characteristics of a conducting fuel electrospray have been studied for clean combustion technology. The multiplexing system which can retain the characteristics of the cone-jet mode is inevitable for the electrospray application. Charged micro droplets can be obtained in almost uniform size during operating the electrospray in the cone-jet mode. This experiment device set up the multiplexed grooved nozzle system with the extractor. Using the grooved nozzle, the stable cone-jet mode can be achieved at the each groove in the grooved mode. This electrospray system was applied to the diffusion combustion. It is the first step to discover the diffusion combustion characteristics of the electrospray. In case of the single grooved nozzle electrospray, the diffusion flames are occurred at each jet of grooved mode and they are quite stable. The exhaust gas analysis was indicated that there is the critical point which can make very stable diffusion combustion.
The purpose of the research is to investigate of diesel spray combustion for simultaneously reduce way NOx and PM. The pressure diesel injection were done into intermediates that are generated by very lean DME HCCI combustion using a RCM. The concentration of intermediate could not be directly measured; we estimated it by CHEMKIN calculation. DME HCCI characteristic is surveyed. Validations of the CHEMKIN calculation were confirmed pressure rise of an experiment and pressure rise of a calculation. Using a framing streak camera captured two dimensional spontaneous luminescence images from chemical species at low temperature reaction(LTR) and high temperature reaction (HTR). Also, the combustion events were observed by high-speed direct photography, the ignition and combustion were analyzed by the combustion chamber pressure profiles.
In this paper, the combustion improvement effects of alcohol-diesel oil blend fuel were investigated in a visualization engine. As a result of experiment, it was found out that the combustion chamber of deep dish type and re-entrant type at the same operation condition. However, when the con-tent of alcohol exceeded 10% of total fuel delivery, the combustion of alcohol-diesel oil blend fuel was worse than that of diesel oil. The maximum blend quantity of ethanol which is not ignited in the re-entrant type combustion chamber was estimated at approximately 40% of total fuel delivery. So, it is necessary to blend appropriate quantity of a volatility fuel such as alcohol in order to improve combustion.
Coal combustion in an iron ore sintering bed is a key parameter that determines quality of the sintered ores and productivity of the process. In this study, effects of the different types of coal coke and anthracite - on the combustion in the iron ore sintering bed are investigated by modeling and experiment. Fuel characteristics of coke and anthracite are observed through a few basic analysis and thermo-gravimetric analysis. It was found that coke has a higher reactivity than anthracite due to the difference of surface area and density. Those characteristics are reflected to the 1-D unsteady simulation of the iron ore sintering bed. Calculation results show that different reactivity of the fuel can affect the bed combustion, which implies the further investigation should be performed for obtaining optimal combustion conditions in the sintering bed.
In this study, three turbulent flame propagation models are compared using experimentally measured data of a 4 valves/cylinder spark-ignition engine. First two conventional models are B.K model and GESIM combustion model. The burning rates calculated from the two models are compared with the burning rates calculated from measured pressure data using the one-zone heat release analysis. GESIM combustion model predicts burning rates closer to the data acquired from the experiment in wide operating ranges than B-K model does. The third model is refined based on GESIM combustion model by including the effect of flame stretch, turbulent length scale band pass filter and a variable that considers flame size and the area of flame contacting the cylinder wall surface. The refined combustion model predicts burning rates closer to experimental results than GESIM combustion model does. Also, the refined combustion model predicts flame radius close to the experimental result measured by using optical fiber technique.

A diesel engine has various merits such as high thermal-efficiency, superior fuel consumption and durability. Therefore the number of diesel engine in the world is increasing. As the seriousness of environmental pollution increases in the world, the method to reduce the noxious materials of CO2, NOx and P.M. is very important subject to correspond to exhaust gas regulations. A new concept, so called premixed charge compression ignition(PCCI), is focused among the various corresponding manners. In this study, we investigated the combustion characteristics of PCCI engine using a mixed fuels with that of commercial diesel engine. Finally we grasped a emission characteristics of PCCI engine. From this experiment, it could be found that NOx reduction is caused by the lower maximum temperature and soot reduction is caused by rapid combustion under diffusion combustion part. Also, it was found that 1st-combustion(cool flame) and 2nd-combustion(hot flame) is appeared in heat release curve, exhaust gas temperature is diminished and combustion variation is increased according to increasing of gasoline ratio.
