  • A convolution alogorithm combined with Fourier transformation is applied to the tomographic reconstruction of the asymmetric spray structure to identify the local drop size and volume concentration. The line of sight intergrated data from Malvern particle analyzer with multiangular scanning form a basic information for the deconvolution. Linear interpolation is tested to obtain the effect of increasing number of scanning angles. This transformation method predicts well the structure of asymmetric spray. The tehnique can be extended to other line of sight combustion diagnostics.

  • Gasification characteristics in the fluidized bed reactor are essential for the design of a gasification furnace to optimize the operation condition. Moisture content of the solid fuel is one of the important factors to influence directly the gasification characteristics. So it is necessary to investigate the effect of moisture content of solid fuel in partial oxidation condition. Gasification characteristics are investigated with results from thermogravimetric analyzer and lab-scale fluidized bed reactor for wood and RDF samples along with changing moisture contents. Additionally lab-scale fluidized bed reactor was run continuously and gas concentrations at the exit were measured. It is observed that the rate of reaction in partial oxidation condition is between the results from the combustion environment and from the inert condition. Moisture content in a particle slows down the heating rate of a particle. So, reaction is delayed by the moisture content. However, RDF samples those are easy to break-up don't show the effect of moisture content. The result of continuous operation condition shows that proper moisture content promotes gasification because steam from the particles helps gasification of the solid fuel. A simulation to predict the syn-gas composition was conducted by the Aspen Plus process simulator. The cold gas efficiency of the experiment was compared with results from the simulation.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate fire risk characteristics of the plastics foam that is used an insulating materials in workplaces. The ignition characteristics and combustion gas of the plastics foam were carried out using the ISO self-Ignition tester, the Cone Calorimeter, and NES combustion analyzer. The experimental materials used were commercial samples and their composition is not disclosed by the manufacturer. As the experimental results, the self-ignition temperature of the plastics foam ranges from $410^{\circ}C$ to $510^{\circ}C$, and the flash-ignition temperature of plastics foam ranges from $370^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. The difference of ignition temperature on density with plastics foam type was smaller since the amount of combustible gas to ignite is not caused enough. The time to ignition of the polyethylene foam in samples of the plastics foam was shorter, and its of polyethylene foam was longer. The concentration of carbon dioxide of the polyethylene foam shows higher in samples of the plastics foam. It is found that the concentration values of carbon monoxide of the plastics foam show very fatality on people during exposure of 30 minutes in fire.

  • The evolution of incipient soot particles has been examined by high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) and elemental analyzer in ethylene-air inverse diffusion flames. Laser Induced Incandescence(LII) and laser scattering methods were introduced for examining the soot volume fraction and morphological properties in combustion generated soot qualitatively. Soot particles, collected by thermophoretic sampling, were analyzed by using HRTEM to examine the nano structure of precursor particles. HRTEM micrographs apparently reveal a transformation of condensed phase of semitransparent tar-like material into precursor particles with relatively distinct boundary and crystalline which looks like regular layer structures. During this evolution histories, C/H analysis was also performed to estimate the chemical evolution of precursor particles. The changes of C/H ratio of soot particles with respect to residence time can be divided into two parts: one is a very slowly increasing regime where tar-like materials are transformed into precursor particles (inception process) the other is an increasing region with constant rate where surface growth affects the increase of C/H ratio dominantly (surface growth process). These results provide a clear picture of a transition to mature soot from precursor materials.

  • This investigation decribes the effect of the combustion and emission characteristics of HCNG engine according to the high purity hydrogen contents. The HCNG fuel was made by the mixture with a high purity hydrogen ($H_2$) and a natural gas. The test vehicle was applied to the bi-fuel (Gasoline and CNG) system and this system was modified from the fuel supply and fuel tank. In addition, the three premixed HCNG fuels with mixed rate of 10, 20 and 30% of hydrogen were used to maintain the safety. In order to analyze the combustion characteristics of HCNG and CNG, the fuel was injected in the combustor with constant volume. The exhaust emission from light duty vehicle with bi-fuel system was analyzed by a chassis dynamometer and emission analyzer. From these results, the reduction rate of NOx emission increased in the HCNG fuel and emission amount of THC and CO shows a similar level with CNG fuel. This study can be utilized the basic data for the development of a new business plans related with HCNG engines.

  • We conducted a test of a direct burning of crude Jatropha oil (CJO) in a commercial boiler system. The fuel, crude Jatropha oil is not biodiesel which comes from transeterification process of bio oil, but it is pure plant oil. The higher heating value (HHV) of the CJO is 39.3 MJ/kg (9,380 kcal/kg) and is higher than that of a commercial heating oil, 37.9 MJ/kg. The kinematic viscosity of CJO is 36.2 mm2/s at $40^{\circ}C$ and 8.0 mm2/s at $100^{\circ}C$. The burner used in the test is a commercial burner for a commercial heatingoil and its capacity is 140 kW (120,000 kcal/h). We did a preliminary test whether the combustion is stable or not. The preliminary test was a kind of open air combustion test using the commercial burner with crude Jatropha oil. We found that the combustion can be stable if the crude Jatrophaoil temperature is higher than $90^{\circ}C$. We measured the flue gas concentration by using a gas analyzer. The NOx concentration is $80{\sim}100\;ppm$ and CO concentration is nearly 0 ppm at flue gas O2 concentration of 3.0 and 4.5%.

  • The characteristics of combustion and flow for a lean premixed flame in lab-scale gas turbine combustor was studied through experiment and numerical analysis. From the experiment, flame structure and heat release rate were obtained from OH emission spectroscopy. Qualitative comparisons were made line-integrated OH chemiluminescence image and abel-transformed one. NOx analyzer was implemented to get the characteristic of NOx exhaust from the combustor. From the numerical analysis, the thermal distribution and characteristic of recirculation zone with the change of fuel-air mixing degree, the characteristic of methane distribution with equivalence ratio in the combustor respectively. Total heat release rate is increased with increasing equivalence ratio. Thermal Nox is reduced with increasing fuel-air mixing degree. Increasing equivalence ratio results in the decrease of the size of reaction zone and alteration of the position of the reaction zone into the entrance of the combustor.

  • This paper presents spray and combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel injected from pressure-swirl nozzles. Three commercial nozzles with orifice diameters of 0.256, 0.308 and 0.333mm and injection pressures ranging from 0.7 to 1.3 MPa were selected f9r the experiments. Spray characteristics such as breakup length. spray angle and drop size (SMD) were analyzed using photo image analyses and Malvern Panicle Size Analyzer. The drop size was measured with and without a blower at the same measuring locations. The flame length and width were measured using photo image analyses. The temperature distribution along the axial distance and the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ were studied. The breakup length decreased with an increase in injection pressure for each nozzle but increased with an increase in nozzle orifice diameter. The spray angle increased and SMD decreased with an increase in injection pressure. The flame with an increased linearly with an increase in injection pressure and in nozzle orifice diameter. The flame temperature increased with an increase in injection pressure but decreased along the axial distance. The maximum temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit and flame at axial distance of 242mm from the diffuser tip. The experimental results showed that the level of CO decreased while that of $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ increased with an increase in injection pressure and nozzle orifice diameter.

  • Emulsion fuel is a very attractive fuel because of its energy saving and pollution prevention properties. We investigated and compared the combustion efficiency of B-C oil and emulsion fuel i.e. fuel made from the mixture of B-C oil and waste water. By installing an R-type thermocouple and an optical pyrometer on each side of the boiler, and by placing a combustion analyzer at the point of gas emissions, We were able to measure and compare each flame temperature, combustion rate and the concentration of emitted gas when B-C oil and emulsion fuel are burned. The following results were obtained: The flame temperature of emulsion fuel at the front and rear of the boiler is about 50$^{\circ}C$ lower than the flame temperature of B-C oil. The reason for this difference in temperature is that both latent and sensible heat is lost due to the moisture in the waste water of emulsion fuel. An analysis of emitted gases shows that when emulsion fuel is used polluting substances decrease also the concentration of CO becomes considerably lower. The combustion efficiency for B-C oil and emulsion fuel is 85.5% and 84.8% respectively.
