Biological conversion of biomass into fuels and chemicals requires hydrolysis of the polysaccharide into monomeric sugars. In this study, dilute sulfuric acid used as a catalyst for the pretreatment of rapeseed straw. Hydrolysis can be performed enzymatically, and with dilute or concentrate mineral acids. Dilute-acid hydrolysis of rapeseed straw was optimized through the utilization of combined severity. Evaluation criteria for optimization of the pretreatment conditions were based on high xylose recovery and low inhibitor contents in the hydrolyzates. In addition, this paper reports the compositional analysis of hydrolyzate liquors and solid residues, xylose and glucose mass balance closures, and digestibility results of the acid pretreated rapeseed straw.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical effects of heating-conduction therapy on lateral ligament injury induced by ankle sprain grade II. Methods: The 67 outpatients who were diagnosed as ankle sprain grade II were performed heating-conduction acupuncture therapy on lateral ligament injury. To evaluate the efficiency of heating-conduction acupuncture therapy, pain threshold with pressure algometer and visual analogue scale(VAS) were applied pretreatment and after 1st, 2nd treatment. Results: 1. The pain threshold and VAS score after 1st and 2nd treatment with an isolated injury of the anterior talofibular ligament showed statistically significant improvement compared with pretreatment. 2. The VAS score after 1st and 2nd treatment with an combined injury to the anterior talofibular and the calcaneofibular ligament showed statistically significant improvement compared with pretreatment. 3. The VAS score after 1st and 2nd treatment with an combined injury to the anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular and posterior talofibular ligament showed statistically significant improvement compared with pretreatment. 4. After 1st and 2nd treatment on the posterior talofibular ligament and after 2nd treatment on the anterior taofibular and calcaneofibular ligament with an combined injury to the anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular and posterior talofibular ligament the pain threshold showed statistically significant improvement compared with pretreatment. 5. Between isolated injury and combined injury of lateral ligament, the difference in pain threshold and VAS score was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Heating-conduction acupuncture therapy has clinical effects of pain reduction on patient with an isolated injury and combined injury of lateral ligament induced by ankle sprain grade II.
The study investigated the effect of thermo-alkaline pretreatment on the solubilization of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and its potential to enhance of thermophilic anaerobic digestion, focusing on biochemical methane potential (BMP) and methane production rate, using two different particle sizes of PHB (1500 ㎛ and 400 ㎛). Thermo-alkaline pretreatment tests were conducted at 90 ℃ for 24 hours with varying NaOH dosages from 0-80% (w/w). BMP tests with untreated PHB exhibited methane production ranging from 150.4~225.4 mL CH4/g COD and 21.5~24.2 mL CH4/g VSS/d, indicating higher methane production for smaller particle sizes of PHB, 400 ㎛. Thermo-alkaline pretreatment tests achieved a 95.3% PHB solubilization efficiency when 400 ㎛ PHB particles were treated with 80% NaOH dosage at 90 ℃ for 24 hours. BMP tests with pretreated PHB showed substantial improvement in thermophilic anaerobic digestion, with an increase of up to 112% in BMP and up to 168% in methane production rate. The results suggest that a combined pretreatment process, including physical (400 ㎛ PHB particles) and thermo-alkaline (90 ℃, 40-80% NaOH dosage, and 24 hours reaction time), is required for high-rate thermophilic anaerobic digestion of PHB with enhanced methane production.

In this study, applicability of the decentralized water supply system were investigated by the high flux evaluation using ceramic membrane with combined pretreatment process. A) filtration process increased the transmembrane pressure of 1.4 kPa and 89.5 kPa on 2 and $5m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$ of filtration flux, respectively, the physical backwashing recovery rate were less than 28.6%. The (B) Coag./Floc. - Sedi. combined process with 4 mg / L of A-PAC showed that the transmembrane pressure increased to within 6 kPa, the physical backwashing recovery rate was over 37.9 % higher than (A) Filtration process. (C) Coag./Floc. combined process showed an increase of transmembrane pressure compared with (B) Coag./Floc. - Sedi. combined process, physical backwashing recovery rate was over 84%. As a result of the membrane fouling analysis using the resistance in series model, the combined pretreatment process showed that the cake resistance (Rc) was more than 92% at membrane filtration flux of $2m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$. In the (C) Coag./Floc. combined process, cake resistance(Rc) was over 86% on high flux conditions. The coagulation floc contained in influent was removed by the membrane, and the cake layer formed with the removed floc was identified as reversible fouling resistance which could be recovered by physical backwashing. The decentralized water supply system, which has the limitation of site area and installation space, is considered to could be operation of high flux of ceramic membrane by applying (C) Coag./Floc. combined process without sedimentation process.

Modal fabric was pretreated with sodium hydroxide, sodium persulfate, and their combined mixture by pad-steaming procedure. The tearing strength of the pretreated modal fabric was measured for subsequent microfibrillation. The solubility of modal fiber in sodium hydroxide solution was highest at 10 % concentration of sodium hydroxide. Extended steaming of the modal fabric padded with 6% sodium hydroxide solution did not reduce the tearing strength appreciably. 2% sodium persulfate pretreatment greatly reduced the tearing strength of modal fabric within 7 minutes of steaming time. The pretreatment with combined composition of sodium hydroxide and sodium persulfate brought about stable reduction in tearing strength within 1 minute of steaming time, which would be appricable to the continuous pretreatment of modal fabric for microfibrillation. Microfibrillation behavior of the pretreated modal fabric was tested also.
Pretreatment of cellulosic biomass is necessary before enzymatic saccharification and fermentation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined aqueous ammonia-dilute sulfuric acid treatment on cellulosic biomass. Miscanthus was pretreated using aqueous ammonia and dilute sulfuric acid solution under high temperature and pressure conditions to be converted into bioethanol. Aqueous ammonia treatment was performed with 15 %(w/w) ammonia solution at $150^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 20 minutes of reaction time. And then, dilute sulfuric acid treatment was performed with 1.0 %(w/w) sulfuric acid solution at $150^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 10 minutes of reaction time. The compositional variations of this combined aqueous ammonia-dilute sulfuric acid treatment resulted in 68.0 % of cellulose recovery and 95.7 % of hemicellulose, 81.3 % of lignin, 89.1 % of ash removal respectively. The enzymatic digestibility of 90.5 % was recorded in the combined pretreated Miscanthus sample and it was 14.7 times higher than the untreated sample. The ethanol yield in the Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation was 90.4 % of maximum theoretical yield based on cellulose content of the combined pretreated sample and it was about 98 % compared to the ${\alpha}$-cellulose ethanol yield.
Soybean hull is an attractive feedstock for glucose production. To increase the glucose conversion in acid hydrolysis, a pretreatment method combined steam explosion with alkali pretreatment for soybean hull was studied. For first step pretreatment, steam explosion conditions (log Ro 2.45) were optimized to obtain maximum solid recovery and cellulose content. In the second step pretreatment, the conditions for potassium hydroxide pretreatment of steam exploded soybean hull were optimized by using RSM (response surface methodology). The optimum conditions for minimum lignin content were determined to be 0.6% potassium hydroxide concentration, $70^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature and 198 min reaction time. The predicted lignin content was 2.2% at the optimum conditions. Experimental verification of the optimum conditions gave the lignin content in similar value with the estimated value of the model. Finally, glucose conversion of pretreated soybean hull using acid hydrolysis resulted in $97.1{\pm}0.4%$. This research of two-step pretreatment was a promising method for increasing the glucose conversion in the cellulose-to-glucose process.

In this study, individual(alkaline, ultrasonic) and combined(alkaline+ultrasonic) pretreatment effect on sewage sludge solubilization was investigated. COD solubilization rates increased with the dose of NaOH added: solubilization reached 27.6%. Additional alkaline agents did not increase solubilization further. Ultrasonic pretreatment achieved 33~39% solubilization when 140 W/L amplitude. In(alkaline(pre-treatment)+ultrasonic (after-treatment)) treatment, solubilization increased as the combined intensity in creased($70.4{\pm}9.4%$). SCOD rising rate(0.076) was achieved.
Pretreatment of cellulosic biomass is necessary before enzymatic saccharification and fermentation. Extrusion is a well established process in food industries and it can be used as a physicochemical treatment method for cellulosic biomass. Aqueous ammonia soaking treatment at mild temperatures ranging from 60 to $80^{\circ}C$ for longer reaction times has been used to preserve most of the cellulose and hemicellulose in the biomass. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of extrusion treatment on aqueous ammonia soaking method. Extrusion was performed with miscanthus sample conditioned to 2mm of particle size and 20% of moisture content at $200^{\circ}C$ of barrel temperature and 175rpm of screw speed. And then aqueous ammonia soaking was performed with 15%(w/w) ammonia solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 hours on the extruded and raw miscanthus samples respectively. In the combined extrusion-soaking treatment, most compositions removal occurred within 1~2 hours and on a basis of 1 hour soaking treatment values, cellulose was recovered about 85% and other compositions, including hemicellulose, are removed about 50% from extruded miscanthus sample. The combined extrusion-soaking treated and soaking only treated samples were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis using cellulase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase. The enzymatic digestibility value of combined extrusion-2 hours soaking treated sample was comparable to 12 hours soaking only treated sample. It means that extrusion treatment can shorten the conventional long reaction time of aqueous ammonia soaking. The findings suggest that the combination of extrusion and soaking is a promising pretreatment method to solve both problems for no lignin removal of extrusion and long reaction time of aqueous ammonia soaking.

This study examines the performance of pretreatment process system as the initial construction stage of the pretreatment process system to use CGS, a by-product generated in IGCC, as a concrete fine aggregate of construction materials. The process undergoes a grinding process capable of grinding to a predetermined particle size during primary grinding and a sorting plant through sieve grading of 2.5 mm or less for particle size correction. Afterwards, it is hoped that the use of coal gasification slag of Korean IGCC as a fine aggregate for concrete will be distributed and expanded by producing quality-improved CGS fine aggregate using water as a medium for removing impurities and particulates.
