  • In this paper, the discharge characteristics of AC PDP, one of the leading technologies currently under development for large-area flat displays, is computed by using Finite Element Method(FEM) combined with Flux-corrected Transport(FCT) algorithm. Up to now, many simulations of AC PDP have been mainly done by Finite Difference Method(FDM). But we simulated the AC PDP by using FEM-FCT method which discretizes the region of interest with unstructured grids. FEM-FCT method can reduce the computational cost because of refining locally where the physical quantities have steep gradients and is more efficient in solving discharge problems, such as a AC PDP. Results are presented in Ne-Xe(4%) gas mixture for a gas pressure of 400 Torr and as the discharge proceeds, the space and time variations of the electron and ion densities, potential and wall charges on the dielectric are described. Results from our simulation by FEM-FCT are similar to those from simulation by FDM and are more efficient in computational cost reduction.

  • The article describes actions and strategies to obtain higher productivity on maritime automobile terminals. The main focus is on elaboration of efficient and effective organizational structure to model and implement short-term, mid-term and long-term strategies. In addition, with an empiric approach we combined the analyses of current findings in important scientific papers and our acknowledgments in practical research of north Adriatic maritime automobile terminals. The main goal is to propose actions towards increasing system's productivity. Based on our research of the north Adriatic maritime automobile terminals and with Lambert's model an in-deep analysis of limiting factors, user's expectations and possibilities for productivity increase has been performed. Moreover, with our acknowledgments a three-level decision-support model is presented. With an adequate model implementation it is possible to efficiently develop and implement different strategies of productivity measurement and productivity increase, especially in the fields of internal transport productivity, entrance/exit truck gates operations and wagon manipulations. According to our observation a significant increase might be achieved in all three fields.

  • The absorption process of water vapor in a liquid film is an important process in LiBr-Water absorption system. The composition of the gas phase, in which a non-absorbable gas is combined with the absorbate, influences the transport characteristics. In the present work, the absorption processes of water vapor into aqueous solutions of lithium bromide in the presence of non-absorbable gas are investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and gas are formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. It is found that the mass transfer resistance in gas phase increases with the concentration of non-absorbable gas. However the primary resistance to mass transfer is in the liquid phase. As the concentration of non-absorbable gas in the absorbate increases, the interfacial temperature and concentration of absorbate in solution decrease, which results in the reduction of absorption rate. The reduction of mass transfer rate is found to be significant for the addition of a small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor, especially at the outlet of tube where the non-absorbable gas accumulates. At higher non-absorbable gas concentration, the decrease of absorption rate seems to be linear to the concentration of non-absorbable gas.

  • The decrease of the distance between particle centers due to the growth of the sinter necks can be explained by the well known two-particle model. Unfortunately this model fails to provide a comprehensive description of the processes for 3D specimens. Furthermore, there is a significant discrepancy between the calculated and the measured shrinkage because particle rearrangements are not considered. Only the recently developed analysis of the particle movements inside of 3D specimens using micro focus computed tomography $({\mu}CT)$, combined with photogrammetric image analysis, can deliver the necessary experimental data to improve existing sintering theories. In this work, ${\mu}CT$ analysis was applied to spherical copper powders. Based on photogrammetric image analysis, it is possible to determine the positions of all particle centers for tracking the particles over the entire sintering process and to follow the formation and breaking of the particle bonds. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of the obtained data. In the future, high resolution synchrotron radiation tomography will be utilized to obtain in-situ data and images of higher resolution.

  • Currently, the waterfront facility was constructed in New Songdo City, South Korea. It has the various water leisure areas and especially an artificial urban canal with filtered seawater by re-circulating flow system. However, due to excessive amount of nutrients from seawater combined with complicated geometry, it is highly vulnerable to deterioration of water quality. In this study, flow characteristics and pollutant transport were analyzed with comprehensive numerical models, MIKE 3 FM and ECO-lab. Based on these numerical results, notable sampling points were selected for field measurements and comparison between modeling and measured results were conducted. In addition, the integrated water quality evaluation index, Water Quality Index was applied to analyze various water quality issues. We also set up scenarios to control the two kinds of water quality factors, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total phosphorus (TP). As a result, the effect of 20% reduction of TP was less than 10% and it was almost ineffective for a year but it was reduced by up to 40% in case of scenario which DO is increased by 20%. Therefore, it was recommended to control the DO concentration, usually by applying re-aeration facility, rather than TP in artificial urban canal with seawater.

  • In this paper, two types of integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants using either an air separation unit (ASU) or an ion transport membrane (ITM), which provide the oxygen required in the gasification process, were simulated and their thermodynamic performance was compared. Also, the influence of adopting a pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture in the downstream of the gasification process on the performance of the two systems was examined. The system using the ITM exhibits greater net power output than the system using the ASU. However, its net plant efficiency is slightly lower because of the additional fuel consumption required to operate the ITM at an appropriate operating temperature. This efficiency comparison is based on the assumption of a moderately high purity (95%) of the oxygen generated from the ASU. However, if the oxygen purity of the ASU is to be comparable to that of the ITM, which is over 99%, the ASU based IGCC system would exhibit a lower net efficiency than the ITM based system.

  • In this study, a gradient material for shielding neutrons and gamma rays was developed, which consists of epoxy resin, boron carbide (B4C), lead (Pb) and a little graphene oxide. It aims light weight and compact, which will be applied on the transportable nuclear reactor. The material is made up of sixteen layers, and the thickness and components of each layer were designed by genetic algorithm (GA) combined with Monte Carlo N Particle Transport (MCNP). In the experiment, the viscosities of the epoxy at different temperatures were tested, and the settlement regularity of Pb particles and B4C particles in the epoxy was simulated by matlab software. The material was manufactured at 25 ℃, the Pb C and O elements of which were also tested, and the result was compared with the outcome of the simulation. Finally, the material's shielding performance was simulated by MCNP and compared with the uniformity material's. The result shows that the shielding performance of gradient material is more effective than that of the uniformity material, and the difference is most noticeable when the materials are 30 cm thick.

  • Groundwater flow in fractured rocks generates many challenging problems to scientist and engineers in the projects related to oil and geothermal reservoirs, subsurface contaminations and underground openings. To circumvent these problems, the numerical simulation of groundwater system is used as an established tool in these days. Discrete modelling approach emphasizes geometric parameters, aperture and transport properties of fracture. On the other hand, continuum modelling approach uses the parameters formulated in a way of average hydraulic property. In recent years, the results of field observations from underground opening indicate that groundwater in rock mass flows in a channel form. The channel flow is postulated as the result of the combined effects of geometric pattern and aperture variation.

  • Nearshore and offshore pipelines are often applied to carry oil, gas, water and combined products. The thermal and pressure gradients of the fluid inside pipeline cause pipeline expansion. This expansion produces stress to connecting structures with pipeline. Should this stress exceeds the yield strength of connecting components or the allowable displacement of the system, a damage can occur. As most pipelines contain hazardous and toxic fluids, the damage usually leads to fatal accidents involving great economic loss as well. Even subsea pipelines can be easily applied to transport liquid type fluid without time and space constraint, they should be designed and maintained carefully to be functional safely during design lifetime. In this paper, various theories estimating pipeline thermal expansion are investigated and the effects of pipe components to expansion are studied.

  • This paper describes the electron energy distribution function characteristics in $SF_6-Ar$ gas calculated for range of E/N values from $50\sim700[Td]$ by the Monte Carlo simulation(MCS) and Boltzmann equation(BE) method using a set of electron collision cross sections determined by the authors and the values of electron swarm parameters are obtained by time of flight(TOF) method. In this dissertation the results of the combined experimental and theoretical studies designed to understand and predict the spatial growth and transport coefficients for electrons in $SF_6$ and $SF_6-Ar$ mixtures have described. The ionization and attachment coefficients in pure $SF_6$ and $SF_6-Ar$ mixtures have been calculated over the range of 10$SF_6$ molecule and for Ar atom proposed by other authors. The results obtained in this work will provide valuable information on the fundamental behaviors of electrons in weakly ionized gases and the role of electron attachment in the choice of better gases and unitary gas dielectrics or electro negative components in dielectric gas mixtures.
