Quality Changes in 'Elliot' Blueberries and 'Sulhyang' Strawberries Packed with Two Different Packaging Materials during Refrigerated Storage (기체투과도가 다른 포장재로 포장한 '엘리오트' 블루베리와 '설향' 딸기의 냉장 저장 중 품질 변화)

  • Blueberries and strawberries are highly perishable and easily contaminated with microorganisms. To maintain the quality of these commodities during refrigerated storage, the effects of two packaging materials as well as passive modified atmosphere packaging on the quality of blueberries and strawberries were investigated. The harvested blueberries and strawberries were first treated with combined non-thermal treatment of aqueous chlorine dioxide and fumaric acid, followed by packaging with polyolefin film (6,000 mL $O_2/m^2{\cdot}24hr{\cdot}atm$ at $24^{\circ}C$) and polyamide/polyamide/polyethylene film (PA/PA/PE, 60 mL $O_2/m^2{\cdot}24hr{\cdot}atm$ at $24^{\circ}C$), respectively. After combined sanitizer treatment, the populations of total aerobic bacteria in blueberries and strawberries were reduced by 2.50 and 1.97 log CFU/g while those of yeast and molds were reduced by 1.95 and 2.18 log CFU/g, respectively, compared with the control. In particular, microbial growth in these samples packed with PA/PA/PE film was reduced during refrigerated storage. In addition, the blueberries and strawberries packed with PA/PA/PE film underwent lower weight loss than those packed with polyolefin film during storage. These results suggest that appropriate packaging with proper gas permeability is necessary to maintain the quality of blueberries and strawberries during refrigerated storage.

  • This study aims to develop an analysis model using a commercial process simulator-ASPEN PLUS for an IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) system consisting a dry coal feeding, oxygen-blown entrained gasification process by Shell, a low temperature gas clean up process, a General Electric MS7001FA gas turbine, a three pressure, natural recirculation heat recovery steam generator, a regenerative, condensing steam turbine and a cryogenic air separation unit. The comparison between those results of this study and reference one done by other engineer at design conditions shows consistency which means the soundness of this model. The greater moisture contents in Illinois#6 coal causes decreasing gasifier temperature and the greater ash and sulfur content hurt system efficiency due to increased heat loss. As the results of sensitivity analysis using developed model for the parameters of gasifier operating pressure, steam/coal ratio and oxygen/coal ratio, the gasifier temperature increases while combustible gases (CO+H2) decreases throughout the pressure going up. In the steam/coal ratio analysis, when the feeding steam increases the maximum combustible gas generation point moves to lower oxygen/coal ratio feeding condition. Finally, for the oxygen/coal ratio analysis, it shows oxygen/coal ratio 0.77 as a optimum operating condition at steam/coal feeding ratio 0.2.

Intestinal Lymphangiectasia in a Yorkshire terrier Dog: Clinical Outcome, Clinicopathological and Histopathological Findings (요크셔테리어견에서 발생한 Intestinal Lymphangiectasia: 임상적 결과와 임상병리학적, 조직병리학적 소견)

  • A 7-year-old, 3.16 kg intact male Yorkshire terrier had the history of abdominal distension, diarrhea, and weight loss. On the basis of history takings, physical examination, laboratory tests, radiography, ultrasonography, exploratory laparotomy, and histopathological examination, the dog was diagnosed definitely as intestinal lymphangiectasia. In this case, signs and results are consistent with those of other reports, but some clinicopathological findings such as hypocalcemia and hypocholesterolemia are not. This means that the findings were not completely in accord with the typical ones of intestinal lymphangiectasia in this dog. Prednisolone was prescribed to treat. However, it was not effective sufficiently. Thus, azathioprine was added to the regimen used in the first trial, and it was quite efficient in inducing remission in intestinal lymphangiectasia. The clinical signs were improved to the combined therapy. This case report demonstrates that the combined therapy for intestinal lymphangiectasia can be used as an alternative to only glucocorticoid therapy.

Effect of Combined Osmotic Dehydration and Hot-air Drying on the Quality of Dried Apple Products (삼투건조와 열풍건조의 조합이 사과 건조제품의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of combined osmotic dehydration and hot-air drying on the quality of dried apple products. Apple cylinders were steeped in 30% and 50% sucrose solutions at different steeping times. During the osmotic dehydration, as the concentration of the sucrose solution and steeping time increased, weight reduction and water loss increased, and the solid gain showed similar results. Osmotic dehydration in the sucrose solutions was followed by hot-air drying at 50 and $70^{\circ}C$. The experimental data were fitted successfully using the modified Page model. At the drying temperature of $50^{\circ}C$, the drying time increased from 4.15 hr for the control to 5.78 hr and 6.42 hr for the 30 and 50% sucrose solution treatments, respectively. Similar results were shown at the $70^{\circ}C$ drying temperature. The k and n values of the apple cylinders decreased by osmotic dehydration, and the k and n of the apple cylinders steeped in the 50% sucrose solution were lower than those of the samples steeped in the 30% sucrose solution. The qualities of the dried apple products were compared to samples that did not undergo osmotic dehydration. The shrinkage and rehydration capacity of the apple products decreased via osmotic dehydration, and decreased as the concentration of the sucrose solution increased. The compressibility ratios of the apple products to raw apple cylinders increased by osmotic dehydration, and increased as the concentration of sucrose solution increased. The sensory evaluation results for the apple products rehydrated in yoghurt indicate that osmotic dehydration greatly enhances the palatability of apple products in terms of appearance, taste, and texture.

Increase of Strawberry Fruit Shelf-life through Preharvest Spray of Calcium-chitosan and Post-harvest Treatment with High Pressure CO2 (수확 전후 칼슘-키토산 및 고농도 CO2 단기처리에 의한 '설향' 딸기 과실의 저장성 증진)

  • This experiment examined the effects of preharvest Ca-chitosan spraying and short-term post-harvest treatment with high $pCO_2$ on the shelf-life of 'Seolhyang' strawberry fruit. Fruit firmness decreased when harvested late in the season and was little affected by Ca-chitosan spray treatments. Short-term treatment with high $pCO_2$ after harvest, however, significantly increased fruit firmness regardless of preharvest treatment. The combined treatment of Ca-chitosan spray and high $pCO_2$ led to an additional increase in shelf-life through delay of skin disorder, fruit decay incidence and firmness loss during simulated marketing. The residual effects of both treatments, however, were reduced when fruit were harvested late in the season. Fruit firmness was more affected by high $pCO_2$ treatment whereas decay and visual quality were affected by preharvest spraying with Ca-chitosan. Although more research is required to determine the optimum concentration of calcium and chitosan, and the optimal spray interval, our results show that the combined treatment of preharvest Ca-chitosan spray and postharvest high $pCO_2$ is effective in improving strawberry fruit shelf-life by increasing firmness and delaying decay.

Batch Scale Storage of Garlic by Irradiation Combined with Natural Low Temperature (방사선(放射線) 조사(照射)와 자연저온(自然低溫)에 의한 마늘의 저장)

  • An attempt was made on the development of a commercial scale storage method of garlic by irradiation. Irradiated garlics with 50, 100 and 150 Gy were stored at natural low temperature storage room $(12{\pm}6^{\circ}C,{\;}75-85%{\;}RH)$ and the physicochemical properties during the 10 months storage were investigated. The unirradiated garlic was mostly sprouted after 8 months storage, whereas the sprouting of all irradiated groups was completely inhibited until 10 months storage, The rotting rate and weigh loss of garlic after 10 months storage were reduced by 25 to 54% at 100 Gy irradiation compared with those of an unirradiated group. The moisture content remained relatively constant during the whole storage period. The total sugar content was increased with storage period. Ascorbic acid content was also decreased until 8 months storage but its content was rapidly increased along with sprouting. Garlic was marketable after 10 months storage by 100 Gy irradiation combined with natural low temperature.

  • In order to develop the commercial storage method of chestnut by irradiation combined with natural low temperature, a chestnut variety Ok-gwang was stored in a natural low temperature storage room ($450{\times}650{\times}250$ cmH; year-round temperature change, $2-17^{\circ}C$; R.H., 80-85%) on batch scale followed by irradiation with optimum dose level. Sprouting rate of chestnut was 100% after seven month storage in control whereas that of 20-25 Krad irradiated group was only 5-15%. In comparison of rotting rate, weight loss and texture, 25 Krad irradiated group was better than that of control. Moisture and reducing sugar were increased in contrast with the decrease of total sugar during nine month storage and these changes were more remarkable in control. Ascorbic acid content was slightly decreased both in control and irradiated group; more decrement was noticed in control.

Effect and Safety of Combined Treatment of Gambihwan and Garcinia Cambogia on Weight Loss: A Retrospective Observational Study (감비환과 가르시니아 캄보지아 병용 투여의 체중감량 효과와 안전성: 후향적 관찰연구)

  • Objectives: Obesity is becoming more popular disease worldwide. Because of the side effects of conventional obesity treatment modality, herbal medicine treatment is becoming more preferred. Gambihwan which including Ephedra sinica Staph is widely used in traditional Korean Medicine practice for obesity treatment. Garcinia cambogia is a kind of health functional food that has body fat reducing effect. Nowadays, ephedra and Garcinia cambogia are often used simultaneously in clinical practice of Korean Medicine. However, the effectiveness and safety of combination therapy in obesity treatment is not well established. Methods: We conducted retrospective observational study to explore effectiveness and safety of combination therapy. We evaluated effect of combined treatment of Gambihwan and Garcinia cambogia on body weight, body mass index, body fat mass, and waist hip ratio reduction. We also assessed safety via liver function test and adverse event. Results: Finally, 23 patients were included. In paired t-test, body weight significantly decreased from 64.50±14.50 kg to 62.94±13.85 kg (P<0.001) and body mass index were also significantly decreased from 24.43±3.79 kg/㎡ to 23.83±3.59 kg/㎡ (P<0.001). Body fat mass was also reduced. Aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase were not significantly increased. There were no drug-induced liver injury and no severe adverse event. Conclusions: In our retrospective review, we found combination therapy of Gambihwan and Garcinia cambogia reduce body weight, body mass index and body fat mass. There were no severe adverse event and drug induced liver injury which indicated safety of combination therapy in obesity treatment.

Protective Effects of Kaempferol and Quercetin on Oxidative Stress in CPAE Cell (CPAE 세포를 이용한 Kaempferol과 Quercetin의 산화스트레스 극복효과)

  • Flavonoids are ubiquitous substances in fruits and vegetables. A main subgroup of the flavonoids are the flavonols, of which quercetin and kaempferol are the major representatives in foods. They are used in food supplements at high doses, because of their preventive effects on degenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the combined and separate effects of kaempferol and quercetin on oxidative stress in cow pulmonary artery endothelium (CPAE) cells over a broad concentration range. The results demonstrate that cell viability was greatly increased in kaempferol and quercetin treated cells whether $H_{2}O_{2}$-treated or not. Cell viability also increased when treated with flavonols in the absence of oxidative stress. Both preincubation and simultaneous incubation with kaempferol and quercetin protected against the loss of cell viability induced by 1mM $H_{2}O_{2}(5h)$. Protective effects of flavonols against oxidative stress were shown to depend on the treated flavonol concentrations. No protective effect was shown under low concentration treatment and cell viability increased 1.6 times at $200{\mu}M$ relative to the control group. At the highest flavonol concentration of $300{\mu}M$, the increased cell viability by flavonol treatment was decreased to almost half of the maximum values. Combined treatments with kaempferol and quercetin showed more protective effects against oxidative stress by $H_{2}O_{2}$ than the separate effects of each flavonol. In conclusion, the protective effect of kaempferol and quercetin against oxidative stress was very pronounced but high concentrations of flavonols can also induce cell cytotoxicity.

Synergistic Anti-Tumor Effect by the Combination of Cyclophosphamide and Dendritic Cell Vaccination in Murine Tumor Model that CEA Expressing (CEA 발현 마우스 종양모델에서 Cyclophosphamide와 수지상세포 백신의 병합치료에 의한 상승적인 항종양 효과)

  • Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is an oncofetal antigen primarily detected in the peripheral blood of cancer patients, particularly in those with colorectal cancer. CEA is considered a valuable target for antigen-specific immunotherapy. In this study, we induced the anti-tumor immunity for CEA through the administration of a dendritic cell (DC) vaccine. However, there was a limitation in inducing tumor regression in the DC vaccinated mice. To enhance the efficacy of anti-tumor immunity in MC38/CEA2 tumor-bearing mice, we evaluated the effects of DC vaccine in combination with cyclophosphamide (CYP). Administration of CYP 100 mg/kg in mice resulted in significant inhibition of tumor growth in the 2-day tumor model, whereas a lower inhibition of tumor growth was seen in the 10-day tumor model. Therefore, the 10-day tumor model was selected for testing chemo-immunotherapy. The combined CYP and DC vaccine not only increased tumor antigen-specific immune responses but also induced synergistic anti-tumor immunity. Furthermore, the adverse effects of CYP such as weight loss and immunosuppression by regulatory T cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells showed a significant reduction in the combined chemo-immunotherapy treatment compared with CYP alone. Our data suggest that chemoimmunotherapy with the DC vaccine may offer a new therapeutic strategy to induce a potent anti-tumor effect and reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy.
