  • The main objectives of this research program were to study the ozonation characteristics of phenol wastewater in the continuous packed colamn reactor(PCR) and the bubble column reactor (BCR) using ozone and to provide the fundamentals of ozonizing the phenol wastewater. Among various influencing factors that affect on phenol decomposition through the oxidation by ozone, contacting method, and ozone flow rate were chosen as reaction parameters. The results were obtained from two different types of contacting methods where the countercurrent flow was more efficient than the cocurrent flow in both the phenol removal efficiency and the ozone utilization efficiency. Furthermore, PCR showed the phenol removal efficiency 1.6 to 3% higher than that of BCR in both contacting methods, as well as the ozone utilization efficiency, suggesting that the countercurrent flow is more efficient than the cocurrent flow. The phenol removal efficiency and the ozone utilization efficiency were reduced in both reactors as the influent ozone flow rate increased. Upon varing flow rate from 0.5l/min to 2.0 l/min by 0.5 l/min, the phenol removal efficiency was reduced approximately from 8.5% to 10.5% and the ozone utilization efficiency was reduced approximately from 6% to 8% in both reactors. The performance of PCR was superior to that of BCR in the aspects of phenol removal and ozone utilization efficiency.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of in situ soil flushing for TPH-contaminated soil remediation with column test. The soil texture of the soil was sand and the initial TPH concentration was $9,369mg\; kg^{-1}$. 0.1% Tween-80 was selected as surfactant solution. And the acrylic and the glass syringe columns were used as reactors. In the acrylic column test, 35% of the initial TPH was removed in 1 PV of flushing and approximately 40% in 5 PV and finally 7 PV showed about 60%. The glass column test showed 3 ~ 12% higher removal efficiency than that of acrylic test until 5 PV of flushing. However, there was no difference in TPH removal efficiency when 7 PV of surfactant was finally flushed. Both of alum only and alum+polymer mixed surfactants showed also the best coagulation efficiency in $150mg\;L^{-1}$ of concentraion. When Tween 80 was newly dissolved in 0.1% to the recovered solution after the coagulation treatment, the removal efficiency was increased from 32.0% to 41.0% in comparison to the new 0.1% Tween 80 solution without reuse by coagulation treatment.

  • This study was purposed and performed to evaluate removal efficiency of non-point source pollution in the process and system based on bio-retention design criteria regulated by EPA. Basic Column Reactors (BCR) were prepared for optimal determinations of inflow rate of first rainfall runoff and composition and ratio of soil layers. Removal efficiencies of non-point source pollution from synthetic runoff and real first rainfall runoff, directly sampled from motor way and parking lot, were analyzed, respectively. Removal efficiency of SS, BOD, COD, T-N, and T-P were all shown to be more than 80%.

  • A variety of safety issues were investigated for chemical reactors using a toluene solvent in case of a fire at small to middle scale chemical plants. The issues covered the operation of pressure-relieving valves and the subsequent discharges of the toluene to the atmosphere either directly or through an absorber, which represent the current practice at most small chemical plants. It was shown that the safety valve on the reactor may not operate within about twenty minutes after an external fire breaks out, but, once relieved, the toluene vapor released directly to the atmosphere may form a large explosion range on the ground. It was also shown that if the discharge is routed to an existing absorber used for the scrubbing of volatile organic compounds or dusts, the column may not operate normally due to excessive pressure drops or flooding, resulting in the hazardous release of toluene vapors. This study proposed two ways of alleviating these risks. The first is to ruduce the discharge itself from the safety valve by using adequate insulation and protection covers on the reactor and then introduce it into the circulation water at the bottom of the absorber through a dip linet pipe equipped with a ring-shaped sparger. This will enhance the condensation of toluene vapors with the reduced effluent vapors treated in the packing layers above. The second is to install a separate quench drum to condense the routed toluene vapors more effectively than the existing absorber.

  • We present three nuclear/hydrogen-related R&D activities being performed at KAIST: air-ingressed LOCA analysis code development, gas turbine analysis tool development, and hydrogen-production system analysis model development. The ICE numerical technique widely used for the safety analysis of water-reactors is successfully implemented into GAMMA, with which we solve the basic equations for continuity, momentum conservation, energy conservation of the gas mixture, and mass conservation of 6 species (He, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O). GAMMA has been extensively validated using data from 14 test facilities. We developed a tool to predict the characteristics of HTGR helium turbines based on the throughflow calculation with a Newton-Raphson method that overcomes the weakness of the conventional method based on the successive iteration scheme. It is found that the current method reaches stable and quick convergence even under the off-normal condition with the same degree of accuracy. The dynamic equations for the distillation column of HI process are described with 4 material components involved in the HI process: H2O, HI, I2, H2. For the HI process we improved the Neumann model based on the NRTL (Non-Random Two-Liquid) model. The improved Neumann model predicted a total pressure with 8.6% maximum relative deviation from the data and 2.5% mean relative deviation, and liquid-liquid-separation with 9.52% maximum relative deviation from the data.

  • The experiments were performed using both batch and continuous column reactors. Batch biodegradation studies were performed under aerobic conditions to determine the biodegradable fraction of the natural organic matter (NOM) source. NOM source was evaluated for its biodegradability at three different UV irradiation conditions and compared to its biodegradability without UV irradiation. In continuous experiments, system operating parameters of empty bed contact time (EBCT), recycle ratio, and influent concentration affected the extent of biofiltration in the biofilters. The effluent UV254/DOC ratios fro the biologically active columns were consistently lower than the influent values, which indicated that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removed by biodegradation was not a significant part of the UV-absorbable material. The increase in UV254/DOC ratio was caused by the DOC decrease across the biofilter because there was essentially no difference between the feed and effluent UV254 absorbance values over time. The results of this research showed that biofiltration was an effective method for removing the biodegradable fraction of NOM from water supplies.

  • Leachate from landfill sites contains high organics, chloride and ammonium nitrogen in concentration which might be potentially major pollutants to surface and groundwater environment. Most of landfill leachate treatment plants in Korea consist of biological processes to remove BOD and nitrogen. However, the efficiencies of refractory organics removal, nitrification and denitrification have not met frequently the national effluent regulation of wastewater treatment facility, especially in winter season. Simultaneous removal of organics and nitrogen from leachate is strongly necessitated to meet the national regulation on effluents from leachate treatment facilities. The intermittently aerated biological activated carbon fluidized bed(IABACFB) process was applied to treat real landfill leachates containing refractory organics and high concentration of ammonium nitrogen. The IABACFB reactor consisted of a single bed in which BAC fluidizing and an aerating column. The fluidized bed is intermittently aerated through the blower located at the aerating column. Experiments were performed to evaluate the applicability of Intermittently Aerated BACFB for simultaneous removal of refractory organic carbon and ammonium nitrogen of leachate. Organics and ammonia nitrogen($NH{_4}{^+}-N$)are oxidized during the aerobic stage, and nitrite-nitrate nitrogen($NO{_x}{^-}-N$) are removed to nitrogen gas through denitrification reaction during anoxic state. The IABACFB reactor condition reached a steady state within 40 days since the reactors had been operated. The blowing mode of 60 min.-On/60 min.-OFF is more compatible to remove TOC and ($NH{_4}{^+}-N$) operated. The blowing mode of 60 min.-On/60 min.-OFF is more compatible to remove TOC and ($NH{_4}{^+}-N$) simultaneously than the mode of 30 min.-On/90 min.-OFF. The average removal efficiencies of TOC, the refractory organic carbon, and the average efficiencies of nitrification and denitrification were 90%, 75%, 80%, 95%, respectively.

  • Removal efficiency of As(III) through oxidation and adsorption in column reactors was investigated at different ratios of manganese-coated sand(MCS) and iron-coated sand(ICS) : MCS-alone, ICS-alone and both of ICS and MCS. The breakthrough of arsenic immediately occurred from a column reactor with MCS-alone. However, most of the arsenic present in the effluent was identified as As(V) due to the oxidation of As(III) by MCS. While five-times delayed breakthrough of arsenic was observed from a column reactor with ICS-alone. At a complete breakthrough of arsenic, the removed As(III) was 36.1 mg with 1 kg ICS. To find an optimum ratio of ICS and MCS in the column packed with both ICS and MCS, the removal efficiency of As(III) was investigated at three different ratios of ICS/MCS with a fixed amount of ICS. The breakthrough time of arsenic was quite similar in the different ratios ICS/MCS. However, much slower breakthrough of arsenic was observed as the ratio of ICS/MCS decreased. As the ratio of ICS/MCS decreased the concentration of As(III) in the effluent decreased and then showed below 50 ppb at an equal amount of ICS and MCS, suggesting more efficient oxidation of As(III) by greater amount of MCS. When a complete breakthrough of arsenic occurred, the removed total arsenic with an equal amount of ICS and MCS was 68.5 mg with 1 kg of filter material.

  • Two mesophilic trickling bed bioreactors filled with two different types of media, hydrophilic- and hydrophobic-cubes, were designed and conducted for hydrogen production under the anaerobic fermentation of sucrose. Each bioreactor consisted of the column packed with polymeric cubes and inoculated with heat-treated sludge obtained from anaerobic digestion tank. A defined medium containing sucrose was fed by the different hydraulic retention time(HRT), and recycle rate. Hydrogen concentrations in gas-phase were constant, averaging 40% of biogas throughout the operation. Hydrogen production rate was increased till $10.5\;L{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of bioreactor when influent sucrose concentrations and recycle rates were varied. At the same time, the hydrogen production rate with hydrophobic media application was higher than its hydrophilic media application. No methane was detected when the reactor was under a normal operation. The major fermentation by-products in the liquid effluent of the both trickling biofilters were acetate, butyrate and lactate. In order to run in the long term operation of both reactor filled with hydrophilic and hydrophobic media, biofilm accumulation on hydrophilic media and biogas produced should be controlled through some process such as periodical backwashing or gas-purging. Four sample were collected from each reactor on the opposite hydrogen production rate, and their bacterial communities were compared by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of PCR products generated using bacterial 16s rRNA gene primers (8f and 926r). It was expressed a marked difference in bacterial communities of both reactors. The trickling bed bioreactor with hydrophobic media demonstrates the feasibility of the process to produce hydrogen gas. A likely application of this reactor technology can be hydrogen gas recovery from pre-treatment of high carbohydrate-containing wastewaters.

  • In order to study of practical purpose of immobilized Mucor spp L42 milk clotting enzyme on activated succimylamino-propyl glass beads with glutaraldehyde in continuous curd coagulation, acidified milk(pH5.6, $8^{\circ}C$) was treated through reactor packed with immobilized beads, and warmed at $30^{\circ}C$ and allowed to coagulation for the determination of enzyme stability, deactivation of milk clotting ability by continuous reaction, the beads treatment conditions, and contact time of milk and beads in reactors. The results obtained were summarized as follow ; 1) After 3 month's storage, activity of immobilized Mucor spp L42 milk clotting enzyme in 0.2M phosphate buffer(pH 4.6) with 0.06% sodium azide was only 80% of initial activity. 2) Milk clotting activity of the beads was decreased by continuouse exposure on acidified skim milk. Nitrogen accumulation on the beads paralled loss of the activity in initial reaction stage. 3) After 6 hours continuous treatment of the beads at 60 sec/ml surface time, the milk-clotting activity of the beads was about 70% of initial activity. 4) Bead reactor and shaking bed reactor were more effective than column reactor on continuouse skim milk coagulation.
