Column foot in traditional Chinese timber structures may be subjected to be uplifted due to the lateral load and subsequently reset under the vertical loads. The residual moment of the rocking column foot is the most important parameter representing the mechanical behaviors of column foot, and the simplification of joints is the basis of structural analysis of whole structure. The complicated mechanical behaviors of joint and the modeling of the column foot joint has been undertaken historically based on the experiments and numerical simulation. On the condition of limited application range of those models, a lack of simplified model to represent the mechanical behaviors of joint deserves attentions. There is a great need to undertake theoretical studies to derive the residual moment and make better simplified model of the joint. This paper proposes the residual moment and equivalent simplified model of the rotational stiffness for column foot joint. And, the timber frame is established based on the simplified model, which is verified by solid finite element model. Results show that a mutual agreement on the mechanical behaviors of the timber frame is obtained between the simplified model and the solid finite element model. This study can serve as the references of the structural analysis for the traditional timber structures.
Reductive degradation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated to evaluate the feasibility of using it for in-situ groundwater remediation. Batch experiments were conducted to quantify the kinetics and efficiency of RDX removal by nZVI, and to determine the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ionic strength on this process. Experimental results showed that the reduction of RDX by nZVI followed pseudo-first order kinetics with the observed rate constant (kobs) in the range of 0.0056-0.0192 min−1. Column tests were conducted to quantify the removal of RDX by nZVI under real groundwater conditions and evaluate the potential efficacy of nZVI for this purpose in real conditions. In column experiment, RDX removal capacity of nZVI was determined to be 82,500 mg/kg nZVI. pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and DO concentration varied significantly during the column experiments; the occurrence of these changes suggests that monitoring these quantities may be useful in evaluation of the reactivity of nZVI, because the most critical mechanisms for RDX removal are based on the chemical reduction reactions. These results revealed that nZVI can significantly degrade RDX and that use of nZVI could be an effective method for in-situ remediation of RDX-contaminated groundwater.

To analyze the effects compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on second-order moment of columns, 30tied rein reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 80mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 24mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 10, 60, and 100were 250, 648 and 880kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.98%(4-D6) and 3.95%(8-D6). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity (Pu/Pn) was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of slender column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that with increasing steel ratio, the value of Pu/Pn and the lateral displacement at the ultimate load were larger for the same slenderness ratio.

Two-way slab-column specimens were tested under monotonic loading increased up to punching shear failure to investigate the beneficial effects of fiber-reinforced concrete. The parameters for experiments are the placement of fibers within the immediate column region, the placement on the entire surface of the slab, and no placement of fibers. The effects of these parameters on the punching shear capacity, negative moment cracking. and stiffness of the two-way slab specimens were studied. According to the results the addition of steel fibers in the slab around the column results in a significant improvement in the performance including the increase of punching shear resistance, greater post-cracking stiffness and smaller crack width at service load levels.

This paper is to study the response of flat plate slab-column connections consisting of various types of shear reinforcement and steel plate subjected to gravity loadings, mainly punching shear forces using the non-destructive testing, spectral analysis of surface waves and structural experiments. The base specimen failed due to punching shear generated from the gravity. The three other types of slab shear reinforcement and steel plate showed effective in resisting punching shear for these types of connections under gravity loading. This study has focused in evaluating the velocity response of a Surface wave during the early age as the poured concrete specimens have been hardened, the possibility of damage detection in the slab-column connection and the relationship between the punching shear forces and the surface wave velocities under the condition that the punching shear forces had gradually increased until the flat plate slab in slab-column connection had been failed.

Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) composite column has several advantage such as excellent durability, rapid construction, reduction of column section. Due to these aspect, applications of SRC columns to bridge piers are continuously increasing. For the design of relatively large SRC columns for bridge piers, it is necessary to check the current design provisions which were based on small section having higher steel ratio. In this study, seven concrete encased composite columns were fabricated and static tests were performed. Embedded steel members were a H-shape rolled beam and a partially filled steel tube. Based on the test results, the ultimate strength according to section details and local behavior were estimated. For the analysis of inelastic behavior of the SRC column, the cracked section stiffness of the columns was evaluated and compared with calculations. The stiffness of the cracked section showed that 25% of the initial value and this stiffness reduction occurred at 85% of the ultimate load in the experiments.

Column experiments were peformed to evaluate the efficiency of surfactant flushing for remediation of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in the soil under controlled conditions. In column experiment less than 0.1 % of the original mass of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), remained in the column after 15 pore volumes of 1% sorbitan monooleate solution were passed through columns. To determine the influence of soil parameters that may affect the remediation process, column tests were repeated with different values of grain size, application rate, surfactant type, surfactant concentration, and solution viscosity (polymer mixed with surfactant). Experimental works suggest that surfactant flushing has a great potential to rapidly remove mass from NAPL in the soil.

Laboratory column experiments for simultaneous removal of Cd and Cr(VI) are conducted using newly developed material, referred to as Fe-loaded zeolite, which has both reduction ability of iron and ion exchange ability of zeolite. Breakthrough curves were obtained from each column experiment, and described with advection-dispersion equation. Apparent parameters including $K_{app}\;and\;D_{app}$ were newly introduced for effectively describing the Cr(VI) breakthrough curve. $K_{app}$ decreased with increasing initial contaminant concentration and with decreasing flow rates. Whereas, $D_{app}$ were not significantly affected by initial contaminant concentration or flow rate.
This paper presents a numerical investigation of the mechanical behaviour of extended end - plate steel connections including comparison with full size experiments. Contact and friction laws have been taken into account with nonlinear, three dimensional finite element analysis. Material and geometric nonlinearities have been implemented to the model, as well. Results are then compared with experimental tests conducted at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. According to the most significant observation of the analysis, a separation of the column flange from the extended end - plate occurs. Other important structural parameters of the connection, like the impact of some column stiffeners on the overall response, local buckling of the column and friction of the beam to column interface, have been examined as well.

Current ACI and AIJ guidelines only address the importance of the concrete strength and geometry of the joint. There are no significant attention paid to other variables. In addition, the current design code doesn't predict the ductility of the beam-column assemblies. The former researcher proposed the analytical model to predict the shear strength of the joint panel as well as the ductility of the beam-column assemblies in year 2004. In this study, the experiments to investigate shear behavior of reinforced concrete beam-column joints and to verify proposed model were carried out, based on the experimental results. As the formal researcher proposed, the factor K (K=0.5), the ductility of BJ-failure was predicted reasonably when the transverse reinforcement ratio exceeded 0.0186. However, the proposed equation showed a large discrepancies in the ductility estimating when transverse reinforcement ratio was below 0.0186.
