Control of pine wilt disease, which is caused by pine wilt nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is heavily dependent on the use of chemicals such as abamectin. Although such chemicals are highly effective, demands for alternatives that are derived preferentially from natural sources, are increasing out of environmental concerns. One of the challenges to discovery of alternative control agents is lack of fast and efficient screening method that can be used in a high-throughput manner. Here we described the development of colorimetric assay for the rapid and accurate screening of candidate nematicidal compounds/biologics targeting B. xylophilus. Contrary to the conventional method, which relies on laborious visual inspection and counting of nematode population under microscope, our method utilizes a redox dye that changes its color in response to metabolic activity of nematode population in a given sample. In this work, we optimized parameters of our colorimetric assay including number of nematodes and amount of redox dye, and tested applicability of our assay for screening of chemicals and biologics. We demonstrated that our colorimetric assay can be applied to rapid and accurate quantification of nematode viability/mortality in a nematode population treated with candidate chemicals/biologics. Application of our method would facilitate high-throughput endeavors aiming at finding environment-friendly control agents for deadly disease of pine trees.
Gas-sensor technology for volatile organic compounds (VOC) biomarker detection offers significant advantages for noninvasive diagnostics, including rapid response time and low operational costs, exhibiting promising potential for disease diagnosis. Colorimetric gas sensors, which enable intuitive analysis of gas concentrations through changes in color, present additional benefits for the development of personal diagnostic kits. However, the traditional method of visually monitoring these sensors can limit quantitative analysis and consistency in detection threshold evaluation, potentially affecting diagnostic accuracy. To address this, we developed a machine vision platform based on metal-organic framework (MOF) for colorimetric gas sensor arrays, designed to accurately detect disease-related VOC biomarkers. This platform integrates a CMOS camera module, gas chamber, and colorimetric MOF sensor jig to quantitatively assess color changes. A specialized machine vision algorithm accurately identifies the color-change Region of Interest (ROI) from the captured images and monitors the color trends. Performance evaluation was conducted through experiments using a platform with four types of low-concentration standard gases. A limit-of-detection (LoD) at 100 ppb level was observed. This approach significantly enhances the potential for non-invasive and accurate disease diagnosis by detecting low-concentration VOC biomarkers and offers a novel diagnostic tool.
The in Vitro chemosensitivity of fibroblast cell strains was determined using a semiautomated tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay(MTT assay) to 16 cosmetic materials. This assay is useful method to evaluate toxic effects of the chemicals. From assay results, we determined that the preservatives are more toxic than moisteurizers. The chemicals in the same group have a different toxicity. That is, in preservatives, Germall -115 is more toxic than Danisol -M, -p, and in surfactant sodium laurel sulfate than Myrj 52, and in moisteurizers, 1, 3-butylene glycol is more safe than the others. When the results from this assay for preservatives were compared with patch test results, good correlation was observed. Forthemore, this assay method can be used together with Patch test for the evaluation of the chemical toxicity, particularly in cosmetic field.
This report presents a mobile instrumentation platform based on a smartphone using its built-in functions for colorimetric diagnosis. The color change as a result of detection is taken as a picture through a CCD camera built in the smartphone, and is evaluated in the form of the hue value to give the well-defined relationship between the color and the concentration. To prove the concept in the present work, proton concentration measurements were conducted on pH paper coupled with a smartphone for demonstration. This report is believed to show the possibility of adapting a smartphone to a mobile analytical transducer, and more applications for bioanalysis are expected to be developed using other built-in functions of the smartphone.

Color reproduction n CRT monitors needs colorimetric characterization concluding two stages with 3x3 matrix and three TRCs (Tone-Reproduction Characteristics). The 3x3 matrix is based on the additivity of RGB emissions, and the TRC represents the non-linearity between the input digital counts and the output luminance. The objective of this project is to evaluate the accuracy of color reproduction on LCD monitors using conventional CRT model(GOG model). For two different manufacturers, colorimetric characterizations of desktop LCDs have been performed. Because the transfer function for LCD is very differ from TRC of CRT, some researchers had reported that GOG model is inadequate for the colorimetric characterization of LCDs. However in our experiment, the degree of accuracy was dependent on the shape of electro-optical transfer functions of LCD. It has been founded that the GOG model could be applied for LCD monitors having monotonically increased Electro-optical transfer function.
A simple and rapid colorimetric method for determination of panaxadiol and , panaxadiol was developed. 1. After heating with 60% perchloric acid, panaxadiol and panaxadiol yielded red.purple color with absorption maximum at 540 nm and 538 nm, respectively. 2. The maximum colors of the Panaxadiol and panaxadiol were reached when the algycones were treated at 6$0^{\circ}C$, 5 minutes or 7$0^{\circ}C$ 3 minutes. 3. The absorbance varied linearly with the amount of aglycone in the reaction mixture. And the colorimetric method was sensitive to about 10$\mu\textrm{g}$ of aglycone in 5.5ml of the reaction mixture. 4. The color was stable for about a week at 4$^{\circ}C$. 5. $\beta$-Sitosterol, oleanolic acid and cholesterol were not yielded red color by treatment with 60% perchloric acid under the conditions described.

In this study, colorimetric characteristics of a 2.2-inch iriver MP4 based upon OLED was evaluated and compared with another MP4 based upon Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). According to IEC61966-4, the two displays were tested in terms of spectral power distribution, tone reproduction curve (TRC), luminance, contrast, correlated color temperature, 2D color gamut and spatial uniformity. Consequently, the OLED showed better performance for the first four aspects but a similar quality was observed for the rest.
Colorimetric chemosensors are now considered as one of the most effective analytical method used in the environmental monitoring. In this study, 10 new direct dyes were synthesized to be used as colorimetric chemosensor. When metal ions such as $Al^{3+},\;Ca^{2+},\;Cd^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Hg{^2+},\;Li^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Na^+,\;Ni^{2+},\;Pb^{2+}\;and\;Zn^{2+}$ were added to the solutions of new dyes, the colors of the solutions were changed and can be easily detected by eyes without any expensive equipments. Some metal ions were coordinated to the new direct dyes forming complex. The experimental data and conclusions were rationalized by UV-VIS spectroscopy.
The present work describes a colorimetric microplate assay for lipase activity based on the reaction between 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitro benzoic acid) (DTNB) and the hydrolysis product of 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol tributyrate (DMPTB). Reaction mixtures containing DTNB, DMPTB, and lipase were prepared in microplate wells, and the absorbance at 405nm was recorded after incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. A linear relationship was obtained in the range of 0.1-1 U of lipase activity by this method. The reaction conditions were also optimized for the range of 0.01-0.1 U or 1-10 U. When assaying crude tissue extracts, the reaction of DTNB with non-specific reducing agents created a major source of error. However, this error was corrected by the use of blank samples that did not contain DMPTB.
Various myoglobin derivatives were manufactured in pork and beef ribeye in the laboratory and their colorimetric values were measured with a chromameter. The average values of L* and a* of pork pigments were higher and b* values were lower than those of beef pigments. Oxymyoglobin (bright red) is considered to be a desirable fresh red meat pigment for consumer acceptance. The means of L*, a* and b* values of oxymyoglobin were 36.41, 27.32 and 4.71 for pork and 30.54, 25.58 and 9.81 for beef, respectively. Nitrosyl hemochrome, the pigment of processed meat products like sausages and hams had L*, a* and b* values of 47.93, 26.85 and 6.63 for pork and 41.82, 23.19 and 11.82 for beef. It was found that as a discoloration developed in meat and the meat color turned to brown, the L*, b* values increased and the a* value decreased.
