A robust and efficient text extraction is very important for an accuracy of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems. Natural scene images with degradations such as uneven illumination, perspective distortion, complex background and multi color text give many challenges to computer vision task, especially in text extraction. In this paper, we propose a method for extraction of the text in signboard images based on a combination of mean shift algorithm and weighting scheme of hue and saturation in HSI color space for clustering algorithm. The number of clusters is determined automatically by mean shift-based density estimation, in which local clusters are estimated by repeatedly searching for higher density points in feature vector space. Weighting scheme of hue and saturation is used for formulation a new distance measure in cylindrical coordinate for text extraction. The obtained experimental results through various natural scene images are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

The purpose of this study is to propose a new direction for color schemes of city signages to provide psychological stability to business owners and improve business value. Types of city sign color schemes and Feng Shui awareness of business owners were examined. Color schemes for signs were proposed, reflecting city landscape colors, color perception theory, and the Feng Shui Sangsaeng Sanggeuk theory. Results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, in order to secure colorscape quality of existing city buildings, signs should be small and consist of only three or fewer colors. Second, existing signage colors and the Feng Shui ideas of business owners have something in common with the five traditional cardinal colors. Thus, it can be interpreted that Feng Shui ideas are deeply rooted in the color use awareness of the Korean people. Third, background colors of signages can reflect the idea of innate Sangsaeng according to the Bonmyeonggung of business owners. The concept of acquired Sanggeuk can also be applied to other design elements such as characters. Fourth, as a second choice according to the function of sign, city landscape or preference of business owner, etc., the background color can remain a color of Sangsaeng, while other design elements such as characters can use a color scheme corresponding to Bihwasaek. Fifth, signs can create a statement and stand out using lightness contrast or saturation contrast theories. A variety of sign color schemes are also possible just by altering the lightness and saturation levels.

본 연구는 김해의 구도심 중심지역인 동상동 종로길 간판개선사업을 위해 대상지 간판 색채 현황을 파악하고 개선 방향을 제안하기 위해 시작되었다. 연구대상 지역은 오래된 시설물로 침체한 거리 분위기를 형성하며, 구도심 간판의 전형적인 유형으로 재정비가 필요한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구의 목적은 간판과 관련한 선행 연구 및 유사 간판 개선 사례를 조사한 후, 대상 지역의 간판 색채 조사를 통해 주조 색, 보조색, 강조 색을 분류하여 색채 현황을 파악하고 이를 바탕으로 향후 진행될 간판 사업에 바람직한 방향을 복합적으로 제안하는 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 대상 구간을 업종별로 나누어 간판 색채 분석을 시행하였다. 연구 결과 및 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전반적인 업소들의 주조 색 간판은 L*값이 평균적으로 높아 고명도와 고채도의 색채를 가지고 다양한 원색 분포를 보였다. 둘째, 보조 색은 대부분 백색 혹은 흑색 계열의 무채색을 사용하여 주조 색과 대비되는 색채를 선택하고 있었다. 셋째, 강조 색은 a*값이 양수(+)에 높은 분포를 보여 적색 혹은 황색 계열과 같이 난색 위주로 분포되어 있었다. 그러나 전 구간 점포들은 중간색보다 채도가 높은 색을 사용하고 있었기 때문에 통일성이 부족하며 이는 거리의 미관을 저해하는 원인이 되고 있다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 향후 김해간판개선사업 색채 계획은 다양한 색을 사용하기보다 어느 정도 색채 수를 제한하고 김해시 대표색을 중심으로 무채색과 난색을 적절히 활용하는 것이 지역의 특색을 살리며 시각적으로 편안함과 안정감을 동시에 부여할 것으로 생각된다.
