  • A door can serve as a feature for place classification and localization for navigation of a mobile robot in indoor environments. This paper proposes a door detection method based on the recognition of various door handles using the general Hough transform (GHT) and support vector machine (SVM). The contour and color histogram of a door handle extracted from the database are used in GHT and SVM, respectively. The door recognition scheme consists of four steps. The first step determines the region of interest (ROI) images defined by the color information and the environment around the door handle for stable recognition. In the second step, the door handle is recognized using the GHT method from the ROI image and the image patches are extracted from the position of the recognized door handle. In the third step, the extracted patch is classified whether it is the image patch of a door handle or not using the SVM classifier. The door position is probabilistically determined by the recognized door handle. Experimental results show that the proposed method can recognize various door handles and detect doors in a robust manner.

  • Most of the existing hand detection methods rely on the contour shape of hand after skin color segmentation. Such contour shape based computations, however, are not only susceptible to noise and other skin color segments but also inherently sequential and difficult to efficiently parallelize. In this paper, we implement and accelerate our in-house distance image based approach using CPU-GPU heterogeneous computing. Using emerging CPU-GPU heterogeneous computing technology, we achieved 5.0 times speed-up for $320{\times}240$ images, and 17.5 times for $640{\times}480$ images and our experiment demonstrates that our proposed distance image based hand detection is robust and fast, reaching up to 97.32% palm detection rate, 80.4% of which have more than 3 fingers detected on commodity processors.

  • Digital content protection has recently become an important requirement in biometrics-based authentication systems due to the challenges involved in designing a feasible and effective user authentication method. Biometric approaches are more effective than traditional methods, and simultaneously, they cannot be considered entirely reliable. This study develops a reliable and trustworthy method for verifying that the owner of the biometric traits is the actual user and not an impostor. Watermarking-based approaches are developed using a combination of a color face image of the user and a mobile equipment identifier (MEID). Employing watermark techniques that cannot be easily removed or destroyed, a blind image watermarking scheme based on fast discrete curvelet transform (FDCuT) and discrete cosine transform (DCT) is proposed. FDCuT is applied to the color face image to obtain various frequency coefficients of the image curvelet decomposition, and for high frequency curvelet coefficients DCT is applied to obtain various frequency coefficients. Furthermore, mid-band frequency coefficients are modified using two uncorrelated noise sequences with the MEID watermark bits to obtain a watermarked image. An analysis is carried out to verify the performance of the proposed schema using conventional performance metrics. Compared with an existing approach, the proposed approach is better able to protect multimedia data from unauthorized access and will effectively prevent anyone other than the actual user from using the identity or images.

  • This paper proposes a color-matching 3D look-up table that simplifies the complex color-matching procedure between a monitor and a mobile display device, where the image colors are processed in a device-independent color space, such as CIEXYZ or CIELAB, and gamut mapping performed to compensate the gamut difference. The transform from a device-dependent RGB color space to a device-independent color space is implemented by performing display characterization. The mobile LCD characterization error using the S-curve model is larger than the tolerance error since the mobile LCD has the channel-chromaticity-inconstancy and channel-dependence characteristics. In this paper we reduced the characterization error using the electro-optical transfer functions of X, Y, and Z value for R, G, B, C, M, Y, K components. Experimental results demonstrated that 64 ($4{\times}4{\times}4$) was the smallest size of color-matching look-up table that could produce an image with an acceptable reproduction error, based on a comparison of color-matched images resulting from the proposed color-matching look-up table and complex step-by-step color-matching procedures.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient face detection algorithm for locating vertical views of human faces in complex scenes. The algorithm models the distribution of human skin color in YCbCr color space and find various ace candidate regions. Face candidate regions are found by thresholding with predetermined thresholds. For each of these face candidate regions, The sobel edge operator is used to find edge regions. For each edge region, we used an ellipse detection algorithm which is similar to hough transform to refine the candidate region. Finally if a substantial number of he facial features (eye, mouth) are found successfully in the candidate region, we determine he ace candidate region as a face region. e show empirically that the presented algorithm an find the face region very well in the complex scenes.

  • In this study, we propose a novel method to segment an individual tooth region in a true color image. The difference of the intensity in RGB is initially extracted and subsequent morphological reconstruction is applied to minimize the spurious segmentation regions. Multiple seeds in the tooth regions are chosen by searching regional minima and a Sobel-mask edge operations is performed to apply MCWA(Marker-Controlled Watershed Algorithm). As the results of applying MCWA transform for our proposed tooth segmentation algorithm, the individual tooth region can be resolved in a CCD tooth color image.

  • When host images are watermarked with CRT (Chinese Remainder Theorem), the watermark images are still robust in spite of the damage of the host images by maintaining the remainders in an unchanged state within some range of the changes that are incurred by the attacks. This advantage can also be attained by "zero-watermarking," which does not change the host images in any way. This paper proposes an improved zero-watermarking scheme for color images on the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) domain that is based on the CRT. In the scheme, RGB images are converted into YCbCr images, and one channel is used for the DCT transformation. A key is then computed from the DC and three low-frequency AC values of each DCT block using the CRT. The key finally becomes the watermark key after it is combined four times with a scrambled watermark image. When watermark images are extracted, each bit is determined by majority voting. This scheme shows that watermark images are robust against a number of common attacks such as sharpening, blurring, JPEG lossy compression, and cropping.

  • In this paper, a new extraction algorithm for artificial structure in 3D cloud points of terrestrial LIDAR is described, considering that various obstacles in terrestrial LIDAR make it difficult to apply conventional algorithms which are designed for air-born LIDAR data. Firstly we use the R, G, B color information from the terrestrial LIDAR data to discriminate among the massive 3D cloud points. Hough transform is then applied to estimate the straight lines that correspond to the target structure. Finally, the structure is extracted by comparing the distance between the estimated line and 3D cloud points. The proposed algorithm is efficient in the sense that it requires the user interaction only when the reference colors are obtained. Computer simulation shows the performance to be quite satisfactory.

  • In this paper, we propose a method which infers an accurate disparity map for radiometrically varying stereo images. For this end, firstly, we transform the input color images to the log-chromaticity color space from which a linear relationship can be established during constructing a joint pdf between input stereo images. Based on this linear property, we present a new stereo matching cost by combining weighted mutual information and the SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) descriptor with segment-based plane-fitting constraints to robustly find correspondences for stereo image pairs which undergo radiometric variations. Experimental results show that our method outperforms previous methods and produces accurate disparity maps even for stereo images with severe radiometric differences.

  • This paper presents color video flame detection algorithm based on wavelet transform to remove detection of flickering non-flame objects. Conventional flame detection algorithms consist of simple or mixed functions using colors, temporal and spatial characteristics. But those algorithms detect non-flame objects as flame regions sometimes. False alarm reasons are flame-like objects with regular flickering lights such as car signal lamps, alarm lights etc. The proposed algorithm is to reduce false detection which is occurred in periodic flickering lights. At first, It segments the candidate flame regions by using frame difference, flame colors. Then it distinguish flame regions and non flame regions including flickering car lights by analyzing wavelet coefficients. Computer simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm removes false detection due to the periodic flickering lamps by performing 97.9% of correct detection rate while false detection rate is 7.3%.
