Objectives: We developed the predictive model for the incidence of colon cancer by utilizing the health screening data of the National Health Insurance in Korea. We also explored the characteristics of the high risk group for colon cancer. Methods: The predictive model was used to determine those people who have a high risk for colon cancer within 2 years of their NHI health screening, and we excluded the people who had already been treated for cancer or who were cancer patient. The study population is the insured of the NHI, aged 40 or over and they had undergone health screening from the year 2000 to 2004, according to NHI health screening formula. We performed logistic regression analysis and used SAS Enterprise Miner 4.1. Results: This study shows that there exists a higher rate of colon cancer in males than females. Also, for the population in their 60s, the incidence rate of colon cancer is much higher by 5.36 times than that for those people in their 40s. Amongst the behavioral factors, heavy drinking is the most important determinant of the colon cancer incidence (7.39 times in males and 21.51 times in females). Conclusions: Our study confirms that the major influencing factors for the incidence of colon cancer are drinking, lack of exercise, a medical history of colon polypus and a family history of colon cancer. As a result, we can choose the group that is at a high risk for colon cancer and provide customized medical information and selective management services according to their characteristics.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption on the incidence of colon cancer in adults with metabolic syndrome. Methods: This study employed a longitudinal study design and utilized secondary data drawn from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). The data of a sample of 2,327 adults with metabolic syndrome tracked every two years from 2001 to 2014 were used in this study. Statistical data analyses of the frequency, number of cases per 100,000 person-years, log-rank test, Kaplan-Meier curve, and Cox's proportional hazards regression were performed using IBM SPSS statistics version 24. Results: During the observation period, the number of colon cancer cases was 46, and the total person-years were 252,444. The incidence of colon cancer was higher in current, over 10 pack-year smokers when compared to non-smokers (hazard ratio=3.38, 95% confidence interval=1.09~8.42). Conclusion: Excessive and long-term smoking should be avoided to prevent colon cancer, especially in adults with metabolic syndrome, since it might exacerbate the risk factors of colon cancer. Particularly, health professionals need to provide individualized smoking cessation interventions to those at high risk of colon cancer.

Purpose: This study was a descriptive survey of nursing needs for post surgical colon cancer patients at discharge. Method: A survey was done utilizing questionnaires about the nursing needs a target sample of 61 patients who had colon cancer surgery during April May 2006 in a general hospital in Seoul. Results: Levels for treatment & prognosis were the highest in all domain, high in order of psychological support & stability, complications & discomfort, diet, daily life style, recovery & health promotion, and support system. Patient factors affecting nursing needs were age, job, duration of colon cancer and handling of stoma. Conclusion: Using discharge education for colon cancer patients based on the results of this study, nurses should focus on the domains of treatment & prognosis, psychological support & stability and complication & discomfort, and should tailor teaching content to be specified for age, job, duration of colon cancer, and handling of stoma.
Background: Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Apoptosis is a necessary physiological process for cell elimination which is very important both cellular homeostasis and cell proliferation and differantiation. Dysregulation can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and tumor development. Survivin, a member of the IAP family, plays a key role in promotion of cell proliferation as well as inhibition of apoptosis in cancer cells. The aim of this study was to investigate whether specific genetic polymorphisms of survivin could be associated with colon cancer development and progression in a Turkish population. Our study is the first to our knowledge to investigate the relationship between colon cancer risk and survivin gene polymorphisms. Materials and Methods: The relation between colon cancer and survivin -31 G/C (rs9904341), -241 C/T (rs17878467) and -625 C/G (rs8073069) polymorphism in promotor site of survivin gene associated with apoptosis was investigated using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Results: Individuals with -31C allele and CC genotype were found to have a higher risk of developing colon cancer (OR=13.4, p=0.01). The -241 CT genotype considerably increased the risk of colon cancer (OR=12.0, p=0.0001). However, there was no significant varaition of the survivin -625 C/G polymorphism among colon cancer patients and controls in our study. Conclusions: This study provides the first evidence that survivin -31 G/C and -241 C/T SNP significantly contribute to the risk of colon cancer in the Turkish population.

Background: In the treatment of esophageal cancer, a gastric conduit is typically the first choice. However, when the stomach is not a viable option, the usual alternative is a colon conduit. This study compared the long-term surgical outcomes of gastric and colon conduits over the same interval and aimed to identify factors influencing the prognosis. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of patients who underwent esophagectomy followed by reconstruction for primary esophageal cancer between January 2006 and December 2020. Results: The study included 1,545 patients, with a gastric conduit used for 1,429 (92.5%) and a colon conduit for 116 (7.5%). Using propensity-matched analysis, 116 patients were selected from each group for comparison. No significant difference was observed in longterm survival between the gastric and colon conduit groups, irrespective of anastomosis level and pathological stage. A higher proportion of patients in the colon conduit group experienced postoperative complications compared to the gastric conduit group (57.8% vs. 25%, p<0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed that age over 65 years, body mass index below 22.0 kg/m2, neoadjuvant therapy, postoperative anastomotic leakage, and renal failure were risk factors for overall survival in patients with a colon conduit. Regarding conduit-related complications, cervical nastomosis was the only significant risk factor among those with a colon conduit. Conclusion: Despite the association of colon conduits with high morbidity rates relative to gastric conduits, the long-term outcomes of colon conduits were acceptable. More consideration should be given perioperatively to the use of a colon conduit, particularly in cases involving cervical anastomosis.

Colon study(Teleflator) is the simplest and most effective method for diagnosing colon disease. However, if bowel preparation is insufficiently done, diseases such as polyps, cancer and inflammatory bowel disease could be mistaken for lesions. As a result
Hizikia fusiforme, a type of brown algae, is widely used in Asian cuisine. It has been reported to have various pharmacological effects. In this study, the effects of the ethanol extract from H. fusiforme (EAHF) on the proliferation of human colon carcinoma cells were investigated. The effect on the survival of human hepatocarcinoma and colon carcinoma cells was examined, and results revealed that the anti-proliferative effects of EAHF were higher in colon carcinoma cells than in hepatocarcinoma cells. The inhibition of proliferation of HT29 colon carcinoma cells by EAHF treatment was closely related to the induction of apoptosis. EAHF treatment also increased caspase activity and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase degradation, induced mitochondrial dysfunction, altered Bcl-2 family protein expression, and increased the rate of cytochrome c released from the mitochondria into the cytoplasm. Furthermore, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was markedly stimulated by EAHF treatment, and when ROS production was blocked, EAHF-induced cytotoxicity was significantly attenuated. These results indicate that the anticancer activity of EAHF in HT29 colon carcinoma cells was induced by ROS-dependent mitochondrial impairment. While EAHF exhibited potent anticancer activity in colon carcinoma cells in this study, further studies on the active components of EAHF and their efficacy should be performed.
Our study is investigated the effects of Nelumbo nucifera root extract on HT-29 colon cancer cells. The anti-proliferative effect of 70% ethanol extract from Nelumbo nucifera root on HT-29 colon cancer cells was identified based on cell viability, Hoechst 33342 nuclear staining, apoptosis analysis, Western blotting and RT-PCR analyses. In our study, Nelumbo nucifera root extract inhibited the growth of HT-29 colon cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. Concomitant activation of the mitochondria-dependent apoptotic pathway of HT-29 colon cancer cells by Nelumbo nucifera root extract occurred via modulation of Bax and Bcl-2 expressions, which activated cleavage of caspases-3 and -9. The findings of this study indicate that Nelumbo nucifera root extract induces apoptosis in HT-29 colon cancer cells, and this phenomenon is occurs via the death receptor-mediated and mitochondria-mediated apoptotic pathways.
Objective : It is recently reported that enema therapy can be effective to enteric disease as well as painful disease, skin disease, immune disease. We look around many reports, books and make a comparative study of colon irrigation, coffee enema, retention enema. Method : I referred to many papers and books about three kinds of enema therapy. Results and Conclusions : 1. Colon irrigation remove fecal inpaction from colon and stimulate perisitalsis by injecting clean water to colon and also increase absorption ability. 2. Coffee enema inject coffee directly to colon, it is effective to detoxification, reducing pain by discharge of bile juice and toxic matters. 3. Retention enema use many kinds of suitable herb medicine to cure different disease by absorption to rectal mucous membrane. It is effective to acute, chronic disease, inflammatory disease.
Objectives : To study the apoptosis effects of fermented Undaria pinnatifida extracts(FUP) against HCT-15 colon cancer cells. Method : By measuring cell proliferation, DNA fragmentation, cell cycle, morphology, and western blot from FUP, the study investigated the effects of the extractions had upon the HCT-15 colon cancer cells, and concluded that the inhibiting effects upon cells were induced by apoptosis. Result : FUP effectively inhibited the growth of HCT-15 colon cancer cells. After analyzing the DNA fragmentation, the study observed a DNA ladder, while examining the cells, and found an increase of sub-G1 hypodiploid cells. On the changes regarding the nucleus of the cells, a condensation of cells and chromatin, as well as an apoptotic body was clearly observed. By observing through western blot from FUP, the study found a decreased level of Bcl-2 from HCT-15 colon cancer cells, but the increased level of Bax and cleaved caspase-3, which as a result induced apoptosis, inhibiting the growth of HCT-15 colon cancer cells. FUP increased the natural death of HCT-15 colon cancer cells by the induction of apoptosis. FUP seemed to have no suppressing effect upon HL-60/MX2 cells. However, compared to the fucoidan, the study was able to clearly observe morphological changes of HCT-15 cells apoptosis, in a 1/2 concentration. Conclusion : FUP had antiproliferative effects on different kinds of cancer cells, while proving especially efficacious against colon cancer cells.
